The complexity of the landscape design comes into focus when the three levels of outdoor living are shown as a unified design thought. Fire pit, pergolas and the outdoor kitchen are connected visually, yet separated by purpose. What unites all the spaces is bluestone.

Modernism and traditionalism are just steps away from each other at this Vienna Virginia pool house. The main house, built by a national homebuilder, draws upon tradition, but the pool house, speaks the language of contemporary minimalism. It presents clean lines and a soaring roofline overhanging tall glass doors and clerestory windows. Great design, careful attention to detail, first-rate materials and impeccable craftsmanship have yielded a spectacular solution for outdoor entertaining. With a fireplace and every conceivable convenience under roof, this pool house might just be the perfect escape for inclement weather as well.

A fire pit is an ideal addition to a family backyard as it opens up the garden for year-round enjoyment, a chance to escape outside and reconnect with nature. A curved seat wall encloses the fire pit area and follows the line of the firepit, providing a practical surface as well as an attractive visual element. Hand-cut Tennessee fieldstone was used here, with a pea gravel floor giving a comforting feel underfoot.

This inviting space features a decorative concrete patio with a custom concrete fire pit and Ipe floating bench. The lush landscaping and cedar privacy fence provides a tranquil setting for city living.

The homeowners desired an outdoor space that felt more rustic than their refined interior spaces, but still related architecturally to their house. Cement plaster support arbor columns provide enough of visual tie to the existing house exterior. Oversized wood beams and rafter members provide a unique outdoor atmosphere. Structural bolts and hardware were minimized for a cleaner appearance. Structural connections and supports were engineered to meet California's stringent earthquake standards.

A newly connected hallway leading to the master suite had the added benefit of a new laundry closet squeezed in; the original home had a cramped closet in the kitchen downstairs. The space was made efficient with a countertop for folding, a hanging drying rack and cabinet for storage. All is concealed by a traditional barn door, and lit by a new expansive window opposite.

A custom fire pit plaza built into the hill off the parking area of the residence provides an evening escape to admire the expansive New Mexican sky. A custom alcohol-fueled fire feature is built into a boulder. A semi-circular stonework bench with flagstone topper and custom cushions/ outdoor pillows (not shown) provide ample seating for residents and their guests. Down-lit landscape lighting provides a soft ambiance to the area while allowing guests to safely move about the space.

A large outdoor fireplace draws attention as a cozy destination at the end of a formal sight line past the pool. A quiet escape without leaving the yard.
