Castle Building & RemodelingThis modern home, near Cedar Lake, built in 1900, was originally a corner store. A massive conversion transformed the home into a spacious, multi-level residence in the 1990’s.
However, the home’s lot was unusually steep and overgrown with vegetation. In addition, there were concerns about soil erosion and water intrusion to the house. The homeowners wanted to resolve these issues and create a much more useable outdoor area for family and pets.
Castle, in conjunction with Field Outdoor Spaces, designed and built a large deck area in the back yard of the home, which includes a detached screen porch and a bar & grill area under a cedar pergola.
The previous, small deck was demolished and the sliding door replaced with a window. A new glass sliding door was inserted along a perpendicular wall to connect the home’s interior kitchen to the backyard oasis.
The screen house doors are made from six custom screen panels, attached to a top mount, soft-close track. Inside the screen porch, a patio heater allows the family to enjoy this space much of the year.
Concrete was the material chosen for the outdoor countertops, to ensure it lasts several years in Minnesota’s always-changing climate.
Trex decking was used throughout, along with red cedar porch, pergola and privacy lattice detailing.
The front entry of the home was also updated to include a large, open porch with access to the newly landscaped yard. Cable railings from Loftus Iron add to the contemporary style of the home, including a gate feature at the top of the front steps to contain the family pets when they’re let out into the yard.

Montgomery Robbins, Inc.We were asked to create something really special for one of our most admired clients. This home has been a labor of love for both of us as we finally made it exactly what she wanted it to be. After many concept ideas we landed on a design that is stunning! All of the elements on her wish list are incorporated in this challenging, multi-level landscape: A front yard to match the modern traditional-style home while creating privacy from the street; a side yard that proudly connects the front and back; and a lower level with plantings in lush greens, whites, purples and pinks and plentiful lawn space for kids and dogs. Her outdoor living space includes an outdoor kitchen with bar, outdoor living room with fireplace, dining patio, a bedroom-adjacent lounging patio with modern fountain, enclosed vegetable garden, rose garden walk with European-style fountain and meditation bench, and a fire pit with sitting area on the upper level to take in the panoramic views of the sunset over the wooded ridge. Outdoor lighting brings it alive at night, and for parties you can’t beat the killer sound system!
Middlefork Luxury Home BuildersRising amidst the grand homes of North Howe Street, this stately house has more than 6,600 SF. In total, the home has seven bedrooms, six full bathrooms and three powder rooms. Designed with an extra-wide floor plan (21'-2"), achieved through side-yard relief, and an attached garage achieved through rear-yard relief, it is a truly unique home in a truly stunning environment.
The centerpiece of the home is its dramatic, 11-foot-diameter circular stair that ascends four floors from the lower level to the roof decks where panoramic windows (and views) infuse the staircase and lower levels with natural light. Public areas include classically-proportioned living and dining rooms, designed in an open-plan concept with architectural distinction enabling them to function individually. A gourmet, eat-in kitchen opens to the home's great room and rear gardens and is connected via its own staircase to the lower level family room, mud room and attached 2-1/2 car, heated garage.
The second floor is a dedicated master floor, accessed by the main stair or the home's elevator. Features include a groin-vaulted ceiling; attached sun-room; private balcony; lavishly appointed master bath; tremendous closet space, including a 120 SF walk-in closet, and; an en-suite office. Four family bedrooms and three bathrooms are located on the third floor.

Archadeck of ChicagolandThis spacious Timber Tech low maintenance deck was built to give the homeowners a place to enjoy the view of their yard while giving them different areas to enjoy different activities. The round aluminum pickets on the rails open the view while creating a sleek look. This multi level deck was custom designed and built in Aurora by Archadeck of Chicagoland.

Deck ProsThis low maintenance two level deck is located in Scotch Plains, NJ. The decking is Trex Transcends in their Tiki Torch color. The railing is TimberTech Traditional Walnut.
The lower deck features an open layout with angled stairs to the yard and pool patio. The upper deck features a grilling area and access to the side yard.
Cummings Architecture + InteriorsSet on ten acres abutting protected conservation land, the zoning for this site allowed for a creative multi-unit residential project. The design concept created a sustainable modern farm community of three distinct structures. A sense of individuality is established between the buildings, while a comprehensive site design references historic farms with a home-like, residential scale.
An existing structure was renovated to house three condo units, featuring sliding barn doors and floor-to-ceiling storefront glass in the great room, with 25’ ceilings. Across a circular cobblestone drive, a new house and barn structure houses two condo units. Connecting both units, a garage references a carriage house and barn with small square windows above and large bays at ground level to mimic barn bays. There is no parking lot for the site – instead garages and a few individual parking spaces preserve the scale of a natural farm property. Patios and yards in the rear of each unit offer private access to the lush natural surroundings and space for entertaining.
Deck Remodelers.comThe client wanted a deck to be connected to the rest of the yard and transition to the upper deck 10ft of grade to the patio on grade. The centrally located circular kitchen area services both the patio and the upper deck and gives lots of options whether it’s just the family or a party for 50. Minimizing rails and stairs during the transition from the upper deck to the lower deck on grade was critical to the clients. Adding the kitchen to the project without obstructing the view out the rear patio doors was also an important request from the client. The WOLF PVC Black Walnut accents and fascia really sets off the Driftwood field. Dutch Quality weathered ledge stone was used in the kitchen with a granite counter. Custom welded aluminum rails and EP Henry Bristol pavers are also featured. The built in flower beds extend the feel of the patio area and allow for plantings to be added. This project turned an unusable back yard and disconnected elevated deck into cohesive multi-level living space.

Serenity Spaces Design StudioA detailed view of a multi-level retaining wall system built with concrete blocks. This modern front yard landscape features terraced garden beds filled with ornamental grasses and evergreen trees, providing an elegant and low-maintenance solution for a sloped lawn in Denver.
Betz Pools LimitedThis young Toronto family wanted to maximize use of a very small severely sloping yard, so they created a series of decks on multiple levels. Custom cedar fencing along the sides provides privacy, while the protective wall of tempered glass along the front allows a full view of the "plunge" pool. The modern look is extended with a deck of acid-etched architectural concrete and an elevated 8' wide sheer descent waterfall adds a final touch of drama. The pool equipment at the back will be out of view in the cabana when it is built. (12 x 27, rectangular)
Deck Remodelers.comThis multi-level deck in WOLF Rosewood PVC decking. The unobstructed dining level with its wrap around stairs flows into the lower lounge area providing an open feel and additional seating. The African Bluestone landing and wrap-a-round cascading steps and walkway add to the texture and variety of color. The semi-sunken hot tub is fully accessible from one side and almost hidden from the deck perspective. The duel sets of stairs give access to the driveway as well as the yard itself. The custom rails are black powder coated aluminum. Black PVC skirting, finishes the base of the deck. a nearly 5ft wide rolling barn door gives access to the excavated dry space below which serves as storage and with 6 foot of headroom is a fully functional 450sf of storage space - Large enough to drive into with a ride-on mower . The door had to be hung using powder coated steel hardware to carry the size and weight of the door The design detail of the hardware itself adds to the architectural interest of the overall project.

The lower level consists of a dining area with space for a table and chairs as well as a section for entertaining at their new custom limestone bar. The second level has a space for grilling and a peaceful area for relaxing in the hot tub. The patio was created with Lafitt Pavers. A Holland Stone soldier’s course and circle inset add an attractive detail, and the Belair walls create a stunning effect while helping to define the different outdoor living spaces.
