this tiny water-wise front yard is on a terrace leading up to the house, viewed both from the inside of the house and looking down on the garden from the stairs to the front door. The garden is designed to be a 'garden of curiosities', a visual painting with dramatic foliage color and architectural plants. Succulents include Agava 'Kara's Stripes', Various Aeoniums, Phormiums, Coprosma 'Pacific Sunset', Oxalis 'Zinfandel', Chondropetalum, Agave 'Blue Glow (pot) among other plants

The lower patio area of this Northern California Landscape Sanctuary adjoins with a redwood deck and a large rock formation adorned with lichen and moss. White carpet roses are mixed with New Zealand Flax (Phormium). Sonoma fieldstones edge the pathways and stairways throughout this natural hillside garden. This vibrant low-water plant grouping consists of Euphorbia characias with its chartruese flowers, Leucadendron Summer Red (Cone Flower) and a variegated Phormium. This colorful grouping hugs the sloped area alongside the lower patio area in this Northern California hillside landscape sanctuary. Sonoma fieldstone retaining walls are planted with succulents and a row of Bamboo creates a screen above. Because the sunniest place to grow vegetables is in the front yard, custom Cor-ten steel planters were designed as an attractive sculptural element, their graceful curves complementing the organic flow of the landscape. Informal gravel provides stable footing to walk and work, while remaining permeable to rain. These are two great plant combinations that don't need a lot of water and provide nice leaf color and textures throughout the seasons. To create a low maintenance, water wise landscape, we removed existing lawn and concrete walkway. Installed Angeles Block pavers in Tuscan, Desert Gold gravel and Boulders, Drought tolerant Aloes, Agaves, Phormium and Callistemon. And installed Drip Irrigation under the gravel.

Dramatic dark burgundy foliage on this evergreen perennial holds its color and size. Great in mixed borders, containers, and can even be planted as a hedge.
