This vibrant low-water plant grouping consists of Euphorbia characias with its chartruese flowers, Leucadendron Summer Red (Cone Flower) and a variegated Phormium. This colorful grouping hugs the sloped area alongside the lower patio area in this Northern California hillside landscape sanctuary. Sonoma fieldstone retaining walls are planted with succulents and a row of Bamboo creates a screen above. Design ideas for a large traditional full sun backyard brick driveway in Los Angeles.

The hillside was formerly all ivy. A bio-degradable jute was placed first to help hold the hillside for 6 months while giving the plants a chance to fill out and do their job holding the hillside. The main plant is a trio of Arbutus 'Marina' multi trunk Strawberry Tree accented with small boulders and up lit. The Ceanothus Yankee Point and the trailing Lantana will help cover the hillside and between roots holding soil and branches reducing rain velocity, they will aid in keeping the hill intact. Carpet roses will further aid in slowing the velocity of the rain fall. The Phormiums will add year round color and interest.

Small agaves such as Foxtail Agave can add architecture to a garden.
