This beautiful home designed by famed architect, Joseph Esherick perches elegantly atop Grizzly Peak in Oakland. When new owners moved in the needed a bigger, more contemporary kitchen. They turned to Andrew Lee Architecture, who designed an elegant solution. The new design stays true to the original style of the home while adding numerous practical feature and modern conveniences. The idea of the redwood divider between kitchen and dining/living spaces is preserved, but is expanded to include much larger openings, a counter that can be accessed from either side, and smooth tracking systems for the shudders. The previously small kitchen was enlarged to include a comfortable breakfast nook, playfully colored cabinets and efficient workspace. The entire kitchen, dining and living areas are surrounded by vistas of the San Francisco Bay and the surrounding redwood forest.

This very hands-on family had already tackled an addition and numerous updates to their home, but the kitchen had them stumped. The challenge was to make the most of a kitchen sandwiched between rooms and still meet their “must-have” list. Needed was a room that lent itself to entertaining, showcased serious, “sexy” appliances; and still felt “homey.”
By making the throughway between the dining and family rooms dual purpose, we were able to provide room for the couple’s 3 children to grab a light meal, a place for a beverage fridge accessible to the family room, and pantry storage in repurposed antique cabinets. Our two-tone color scheme with glass display for the owner’s Fiestaware keeps the room grounded while still reflecting light in this otherwise contained room. Custom features include a barrel hood with bronze nail heads, slatted cubbies for all family members and a hidden, shallow-depth broom closet.
No doubt, as with most young families on the go, having the hub of their home organized, cheerful and able to meet their needs makes everyone feel “right at home.”

This project is a new 5,900 sf. primary residence for a couple with three children. The site is slightly elevated above the residential street and enjoys winter views of the Potomac River.
The family’s requirements included five bedrooms, five full baths, a powder room, family room, dining room, eat-in kitchen, walk-in pantry, mudroom, lower level recreation room, exercise room, media room and numerous storage spaces. Also included was the request for an outdoor terrace and adequate outdoor storage, including provision for the storage of bikes and kayaks. The family needed a home that would have two entrances, the primary entrance, and a mudroom entry that would provide generous storage spaces for the family’s active lifestyle. Due to the small lot size, the challenge was to accommodate the family’s requirements, while remaining sympathetic to the scale of neighboring homes.
The residence employs a “T” shaped plan to aid in minimizing the massing visible from the street, while organizing interior spaces around a private outdoor terrace space accessible from the living and dining spaces. A generous front porch and a gambrel roof diminish the home’s scale, providing a welcoming view along the street front. A path along the right side of the residence leads to the family entrance and a small outbuilding that provides ready access to the bikes and kayaks while shielding the rear terrace from view of neighboring homes.
The two entrances join a central stair hall that leads to the eat-in kitchen overlooking the great room. Window seats and a custom built banquette provide gathering spaces, while the French doors connect the great room to the terrace where the arbor transitions to the garden. A first floor guest suite, separate from the family areas of the home, affords privacy for both guests and hosts alike. The second floor Master Suite enjoys views of the Potomac River through a second floor arched balcony visible from the front.
The exterior is composed of a board and batten first floor with a cedar shingled second floor and gambrel roof. These two contrasting materials and the inclusion of a partially recessed front porch contribute to the perceived diminution of the home’s scale relative to its smaller neighbors. The overall intention was to create a close fit between the residence and the neighboring context, both built and natural.

Throughout the years Ancient Elements Stoneworks, LLC (AES) has accommodated numerous requests from clients and contractors alike. Our mission is to make the homeowners dreams come true. With this cabin AES was present with a new and exciting challenge, we were asked to create a kitchen in a cabin that was ADA compliant for the homeowner. Brandon and the employees at AES did just that. With a 6cm laminated ogee to full bullnose edge detail, pop up outlets, a drop-down area for the cooktop, and lastly the open spaces underneath the sink and the cooktop making it accessible for anyone in a wheelchair. The kitchen was able to be set up to look amazing and to be functional for the homeowner for years to come.

Oakley, one of our largest standard floor plans, is a two-story modular home with almost 4,000 square feet of living space. With four sizeable bedrooms, three and a half baths, and an optional bonus room above the garage, this home easily accommodates a growing family.
The entry foyer is open to the second floor, offering a grand entrance with abundant natural light. An optional panelized three-car garage provides homeowners with an alternate entrance and plenty of storage space.
Oakley’s kitchen includes numerous amenities for cooking and dining, such as a butler’s pantry and wet bar, a prep island, and a bay window nook with direct outdoor access. This floor plan also contains a family room, a living room, and a dining room with an optional tray ceiling, as well as a spacious first-floor study ideal for remote work.
The window bay continues upstairs, maximizing natural light in the master bedroom. The ensuite bathroom includes a double sink vanity, a wide linen closet, and a separate water closet for additional privacy.

This masterpiece is a both a feat of modern engineering as well as a work of art. Only for the most discerning palates...fully automated home situated on the most premium perch overlooking unobstructed views of the NYC skyline from the George Washington Bridge to Downtown! Built for entertaining numerous guests, the home has an open floor plan with magnificent 22' soaring ceilings, and a wall of glass facing the Hudson River. When privacy is paramount, and convenience and accessibility to the City are a necessity, this home has a decisive advantage over all other options in the area. Experiencing this showplace in person is a must.

The first goal for this client in Chatham was to give them a front walk and entrance that was beautiful and grande. We decided to use natural blue bluestone tiles of random sizes. We integrated a custom cut 6" x 9" bluestone border and ran it continuous throughout. Our second goal was to give them walking access from their driveway to their front door. Because their driveway was considerably lower than the front of their home, we needed to cut in a set of steps through their driveway retaining wall, include a number of turns and bridge the walkways with multiple landings. While doing this, we wanted to keep continuity within the building products of choice. We used real stone veneer to side all walls and stair risers to match what was already on the house. We used 2" thick bluestone caps for all stair treads and retaining wall caps. We installed the matching real stone veneer to the face and sides of the retaining wall. All of the bluestone caps were custom cut to seamlessly round all turns. We are very proud of this finished product. We are also very proud to have had the opportunity to work for this family. What amazing people. #GreatWorkForGreatPeople
As a side note regarding this phase - throughout the construction, numerous local builders stopped at our job to take pictures of our work. #UltimateCompliment #PrimeIsInTheLead
