Complete bathroom remodel for wheelchair access and 5' wheelchair turning radius. Bath tub and existing closet taken in to create 5' x 5' wheelchair accessible shower. Bathroom door enlarged to 42" cased opening for better access. Toilet moved and rotated for better access and bidet installed. Lift installed by Eric Strader with Rehab Outfitters. Blocking installed for all grab bars by toilet and in shower. New ADA vanity built for roll up wheelchair access. New hallway created by taking in existing closet and built in cabinets.

  Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   Our clients and their three teenage kids had outgrown the footprint of their existing home and felt they needed some space to spread out. They came in with a couple of sets of drawings from different architects that were not quite what they were looking for, so we set out to really listen and try to provide a design that would meet their objectives given what the space could offer. We started by agreeing that a bump out was the best way to go and then decided on the size and the floor plan locations of the mudroom, powder room and butler pantry which were all part of the project. We also planned for an eat-in banquette that is neatly tucked into the corner and surrounded by windows providing a lovely spot for daily meals. The kitchen itself is L-shaped with the refrigerator and range along one wall, and the new sink along the exterior wall with a large window overlooking the backyard. A large island, with seating for five, houses a prep sink and microwave. A new opening space between the kitchen and dining room includes a butler pantry/bar in one section and a large kitchen pantry in the other. Through the door to the left of the main sink is access to the new mudroom and powder room and existing attached garage. White inset cabinets, quartzite countertops, subway tile and nickel accents provide a traditional feel. The gray island is a needed contrast to the dark wood flooring. Last but not least, professional appliances provide the tools of the trade needed to make this one hardworking kitchen. This bathroom was built as a wet room with all surfaces being waterproofed. The homeowner is in a wheelchair but wanted to be able to care for himself independently. The floors slope toward the drain for proper water drainage and the sink is wheelchair accessible. Grab bars and a hand held shower were installed for easier bathing.

This rustic style kitchen design was created as part of a new home build to be fully wheelchair accessible for an avid home chef. This amazing design includes state of the art appliances, distressed kitchen cabinets in two stain colors, and ample storage including an angled corner pantry. The range and sinks are all specially designed to be wheelchair accessible, and the farmhouse sink also features a pull down faucet. The island is accented with a stone veneer and includes ample seating. A beverage bar with an undercounter wine refrigerator and the open plan design make this perfect place to entertain. The on-set of a neuromuscular disorder was the basis for this custom kitchen and required the complete customization of this space to the specific needs of the client, as well as to his wife who does most the cooking on a daily basis. The layout was designed for the couple to be able to work together in the kitchen, or independently. The Crystal Keyline island, range-hood and cooktop area are focal points, finished in Antique Ivory w/Brown Highlights, that contrast nicely with Crystal Keyline Toasted Rye w/Brown Highlights cabinetry. The Bayfield door style unifies the design. The Typhoon Bordeaux granite countertops are layered in staggered heights for added visual interest. The Kohler Cruette single-hole faucet with pull-down spout and lever handle service a Kohler "Vault" double-bowl sink (in 8" depth to allow for wheelchair accessibility). A Northland Cast Iron undermount sink in Biscuit makes for a perfect fruit & vegetable prep area, allowing plenty of room for multiple cooks in the kitchen - and yes, it's accessible too! Although largely dictated by the husband's need for accessibility, the universal design of this kitchen is also extremely friendly for a person of smaller stature (his wife!) The couple feels at home in this kitchen yet, it’s not obvious that someone with physical limitations utilizes this space.

Bathroom - coastal bathroom idea in San Diego

We created this beautiful accessible bathroom in Carlsbad to give our client a more functional space. We designed this unique bath, specific to the client's specifications to make it more wheel chair accessible. Features such as the roll in shower, roll up vanity and the ability to use her chair for flexibility over the fixed wall mounted seat allow her to be more independent in this bathroom. Safety was another significant factor for the room. We added support bars in all areas and with maximum flexibility to allow the client to perform all bathing functions independently, and all were positioned after carefully recreating her movements. We met the objectives of functionality and safety without compromising beauty in this aging in place bathroom. Travertine-look porcelain tile was used in a large format on the shower walls to minimize grout lines and maximize ease of maintenance. A crema marfil marble mosaic in an elongated hex pattern was used in the shower room for it’s beauty and flexibility in sloped shower. A custom cabinet was made to the height ideal for our client’s use of the sink and a protective panel placed over the pea trap.

Transforming this small bathroom into a wheelchair accessible retreat was no easy task. Incorporating unattractive grab bars and making them look seamless was the goal. A floating vanity / countertop allows for roll up accessibility and the live edge of the granite countertops make if feel luxurious. Double sinks for his and hers sides plus medicine cabinet storage helped for this minimal feel of neutrals and breathability. The barn door opens for wheelchair movement but can be closed for the perfect amount of privacy.
