When designing for a client you must take into account their personality and their love for specific materials. Thats how this eclectic kitchen was born. The cooler blue transitional cabinets combined with the warmth and rustic look of the hickory wood is an amazing fusion of styles, add the ultra-modern 3d tile backsplash and the custom poured terrazzo concrete countertop and waterfall and you get a true joyful and personal kitchen that was tailored made for our client.

Book shelves needed to be strong so they wouldn’t sag under the weight of the books – this was of utmost importance to the brief, these clients love books and reading. Adjustable book shelves so they could fit their books exactly and change it up when needed. The bespoke library was to go right up to the very high ceiling and finish in a cornice. The cornice needed a particular profile to match their existing furniture. “It’s better than we imagined it could be” was the first thing they said when they saw it complete! When we first visited and discussed the design for this bespoke library in Bristol with them, it became obvious that an ‘L’ shape wouldn’t work in the room, so the first draft was to have the shelves and cabinets along one wall. There were around 5 revisions in the end, until the design was approved. The design was intricate and had to be spot on taking the wall nib and the opening door and latch into account. The whole bookcase cabinetry was made from solid tulip wood, this is a strong and stable material to take the weight of the books. The cornice was specially commissioned to match the profile of their existing furniture. For the adjustable shelves we used brass bookcase strips. The bookshelves are all solid English oak from our favourite local supplier a family run business called Interesting Timbers these were all finished in our rollered Osmo oil finish. Jo hand painted the whole piece, inside and out, it in their choice of colour (Woad’ by Little Greene). Jim installed it to our meticulous standards and the clients were very happy with the results. The private home, reminiscent of Maine lodges and family camps, was designed to be a sanctuary for the family and their many relatives. Lassel Architects worked closely with the owners to meet their needs and wishes and collaborated thoroughly with the builder during the construction process to provide a meticulously crafted home. The open-concept plan, framed by a unique timber frame inspired by Greene & Greene’s designs, provides large open spaces for entertaining with generous views to the lake, along with sleeping lofts that comfortably host a crowd overnight. Each of the family members' bedrooms was configured to provide a view to the lake. The bedroom wings pivot off a staircase which winds around a natural tree trunk up to a tower room with 360-degree views of the surrounding lake and forest. All interiors are framed with natural wood and custom-built furniture and cabinets reinforce daily use and activities. The family enjoys the home throughout the entire year; therefore careful attention was paid to insulation, air tightness and efficient mechanical systems, including in-floor heating. The house was integrated into the natural topography of the site to connect the interior and exterior spaces and encourage an organic circulation flow. Solar orientation and summer and winter sun angles were studied to shade in the summer and take advantage of passive solar gain in the winter. Equally important was the use of natural ventilation. The design takes into account cross-ventilation for each bedroom while high and low awning windows to allow cool air to move through the home replacing warm air in the upper floor. The tower functions as a private space with great light and views with the advantage of the Venturi effect on warm summer evenings. Sandy Agrafiotis

Most design showhouses are properties for sale, and each designer creates a space for viewing. It’s a great way to market the property and the designer. However, the Kingston Design Showhouse in the Fall of 2019 was at Historic Wiltyck House in Kingston, New York, that's partially used as an Airbnb and home for the owners. The room I designed is the homeowner's private dining room; therefore, we took their taste and needs into account, especially on architectural decisions. The overall style is a mixture of modern and traditional, feminine and masculine, and moody and bright, lots of depth but not overwhelming. The architecture serves as a canvas for the furniture showcased during the exhibit and then the homeowner's furniture that will occupy the space afterward. Small details such as replacing or refinishing the doorknobs, replacing the switches and outlets were not forgotten. Then more significant details such as the wallpapered ceiling, new ceiling medallion, and light fixture make a tremendous impact on the space. The wall paint is neutral enough but adds depth with its medium tone gray. Then we added a white border and mauve painted trim as an interpretation of the crown molding that's missing. During the exhibit, we had local makers from the Hudson Valley well represented through furniture, accessories, art, and floral arrangements. All are makers that I love and want to share with you; without them, the room wouldn’t be as lovely as it is.

The architect/builder decided to make a design statement by selecting 4" squared-off white oak treads, maintaining uniform open risers (up to code openings), and by matching the bold black-painted 3" routed-stringers with the clean and open 1/2"-round rigid horizontal bars. Our architecture team was proud to design this traditional, cottage inspired home that is tucked within a developed residential location in St. Louis County. The main levels account for 6097 Sq Ft and an additional 1300 Sq Ft was reserved for the lower level. The homeowner requested a unique design that would provide backyard privacy from the street and an open floor plan in public spaces, but privacy in the master suite. Challenges of this home design included a narrow corner lot build site, building height restrictions and corner lot setback restrictions. The floorplan design was tailored to this corner lot and oriented to take full advantage of southern sun in the rear courtyard and pool terrace area. There are many notable spaces and visual design elements of this custom 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom brick cottage home. A mostly brick exterior with cut stone entry surround and entry terrace gardens helps create a cozy feel even before entering the home. Special spaces like a covered outdoor lanai, private southern terrace and second floor study nook create a pleasurable every-day living environment. For indoor entertainment, a lower level rec room, gallery, bar, lounge, and media room were also planned.
