Living room - transitional living room idea in Burlington

The existing kitchen in this turn-of-the-century (c. 1901) home in Newton, MA was in dire need of updating when the owners acquired it for their family of four. They wanted to both enlarge it and open it up to an existing adjacent dining space that they planned to transform into a family sitting area. In the spirit of the home’s original classical columns and detailing, we introduced short Doric columns on half-walls to shape a new opening between the former dining space, now family room, and the kitchen. The white inset kitchen-cabinetry and white marble counter were chosen for both their vintage appeal and clean, contemporary palette. To further improve function a half-bath was tucked in off the family room and a 12’ x 12’ mud room was added to the back of the kitchen. This 7500 sf single-family, 5 bedroom home designed, built, and engineered by BGD&C Custom Homes is located in Lincoln Park. The home features classic architecture and timeless detailing with a brick and limestone façade and prominent copper-clad bay windows; and boasts lavish exterior entertaining space, including a side yard, rear yard, balconies, and roof deck. The clients moving from the Chicago suburbs are empty nesters and have two children. Amongst the owner’s must haves- an urban home that could comfortably accommodate their visiting children, and spaces throughout designed specifically for entertaining. The house was already partially built when the client acquired a second lot, allowing for two additions – a conservatory-style game room and a music room – also designed and built by BGD&C Custom Homes.

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, this one was far from inviting. The new owners wanted to make all the rooms in their newly acquired Victorian house brighter and more functional and the kitchen was the first to be designed. We proposed a new layout which included an eat-at island and lots of space for the cook of the family. Him! We designed the space to give our clients everything on their wish list, including a wall oven which was installed in the storage space in adjacent laundry room. The beautiful blue backsplash tiles make this kitchen not just another white kitchen and the dark soapstone counters add so much personality. The existing brick wall is a nice nod to the history of the home and raising the ceiling slightly makes a big difference (thin LED pot lights were just the trick).

Designing an object was accompanied by certain difficulties. The owners bought a plot on which there was already a house. Its quality and appearance did not suit customers in any way. Moreover, the construction of a house from scratch was not even discussed, so the architects Vitaly Dorokhov and Tatyana Dmitrenko had to take the existing skeleton as a basis. During the reconstruction, the protruding glass volume was demolished, some structural elements of the facade were simplified. The number of storeys was increased and the height of the roof was increased. As a result, the building took the form of a real English home, as customers wanted. The planning decision was dictated by the terms of reference. And the number of people living in the house. Therefore, in terms of the house acquired 400 m \ 2 extra. The entire engineering structure and heating system were completely redone. Heating of the house comes from wells and the Ecokolt system. The climate system of the house itself is integrated into the relay control system that constantly maintains the climate and humidity in the house.

Feature In: Visit Miami Beach Magazine & Island Living A nice young couple contacted us from Brazil to decorate their newly acquired apartment. We schedule a meeting through Skype and from the very first moment we had a very good feeling this was going to be a nice project and people to work with. We exchanged some ideas, comments, images and we explained to them how we were used to worked with clients overseas and how important was to keep communication opened. They main concerned was to find a solution for a giant structure leaning column in the main room, as well as how to make the kitchen, dining and living room work together in one considerably small space with few dimensions. Whether it was a holiday home or a place to rent occasionally, the requirements were simple, Scandinavian style, accent colors and low investment, and so we did it. Once the proposal was signed, we got down to work and in two months the apartment was ready to welcome them with nice scented candles, flowers and delicious Mojitos from their spectacular view at the 41th floor of one of Miami's most modern and tallest building. Luxury and beauty formed by pure crystal with 24% lead content; Luxor is blown by mouth and beveled in by our master artists into the shape of a circular or oval bowl. No machine or modern technology has been used in the creation of this exquisite wash basin. Luxor is the product of the collective knowledge of crystal making acquired through years of ancient and noble glass arts. The cut glass creates a rectangular grid pattern on the outside and it is polished by hand on the inside for a smooth and hygienic surface.

The Owners approached their new project with the thought that it should be a quiet addition, have an appropriate scale, and use the same architectural language as the existing house. What the Owners wanted was a more functional family space for their older children and needed a large kitchen and back entry for this original Myers Park home. The new family room would need to include the antique wood paneling the Owners had acquired. The new kitchen would need to incorporate antique wood beams, a large family table and access to a new pool deck. The back entry would need to have a place for sports bags, coats and charging station. A new landscape plan would be provided which would have a new pool requiring a renovation of an existing guest house. The new back entry would include built-ins for a charging station and bench as well as closets for coats and sports equipment.

The owners acquired an adjacent property and called on our firm and a team of consultants to join the properties into one seamless private park like setting complete with a Pool Pavilion and Pool. A study of light and space, The Pavilion offers different experiences at different times of the day. The optimum display of light and transparency occurs at dusk. At that hour, one can catch the reflections in the pool and the glowing of this small jewel within in the landscape. Amenities include an air conditioned lounging area with TV and kitchen/bar, a laundry and changing room, a private bathroom with shower, an additional outdoor shower and a full basement for storage of pool toys and equipment. The contemporary approach combines rich woods, stainless steel, and concrete with marble, glass tile and natural stones. Cedar shingles, a nod to the main house, recede into the landscape while the soaring glass windows and doors flood the space with light and views back into the landscape. The building also features a bead board ceiling and exposed structure. This blend of materials yields a sophisticated modern design that is calm and cheerful while providing conditioned entertaining space for the Owner’s family and friends. Classic bedroom in wood Louis XVI style White and Gold. The bedroom is characterized by the classic bed in carved walnut wood Louis XVI style. To note the bed headboard, enriched by precious carvings made by hand and with gold leaf finish, that stand out on the white finish that characterize the rest of the bed. Same carvings and finishings also for the footboard of this beautiful classic bed in wood. To complete the classic bedroom in wood White and Gold the night tables, both in classic version and king size-formed, the beautiful chest of drawers and the magnificent carved dressing table. The night tables, in white over gold finish like so the classic bed, are realized in walnut wood and present graceful garlands of flowers that climb on the little columns of classic school, or they are realized with more geometrical and meticulous shapes, with refined and sober golden carvings. The same luxury finishing is also found in the Greek frets, all carved by hand in the walnut wood, that enrich the composition, giving to this bedroom a rich appearance and at the same time very bright and homely. Very particular the effect given by the special finish white over gold, that consist in application on all the furniture that compose this bedroom a shining coat of gold leaf, for then apply the white finish with brush strokes artistically irregular: and here this wonderful classic bedroom in walnut acquire very particular antiqued shades, without giving up to the splendor of the gold. Clients who enlisted my services two years ago found a new home they loved, but wanted to make sure that the newly acquired furniture would fit the space. They called on K Two Designs to work in the existing furniture as well as add new pieces. The whole house was given a fresh coat of white paint, and draperies and rugs were added to warm and soften the spaces. The third floor became the media room where the family can relax in a completely private area.

Designed using the ancient Chinese organizational principles of feng shui, this free-standing kitchen combines Zen-like calm with the convenience and performance of a professional kitchen. The concrete walls are painted in a color that’s light and soothing, while floors are bare and clean, save for cushioned mats placed in front of busy workspaces. The windows were acquired from a vacated building and adapted for residential use. In this large kitchen, designers concentrated a rangetop and two wall ovens into one cooking center. A warming shelf for plates is situated below the restaurant-style ventilation hood and above the rangetop for an added touch of convenience that enhances the cook’s serenity. The Asian minimalist aesthetic and commercial cooking equipment are given a warm feeling with the use of natural materials such as African zebrawood and live plants. This is a kitchen that truly reflects the spirit of yin and yang, in which harmony is achieved through opposing yet complementary forces.
