Home design - mid-century modern home design idea in San Francisco

Saturday August 8, 9:00 to 10:30am | Denver
Cranmer Park Residence by Gretchen Wilson and Laurel Raines of Dig Studio
Perched on a high point of Denver’s Cranmer Park, one of the great park landmarks of the Mile-High City, this designed landscape complements and enhances the architectural aesthetic of the home; a stucco-clad Italianate mansion built in 1917 by renowned architect Jacques Benedict and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The landscape, designed and constructed in three phases over a twelve-year period from 1998 to 2010, creates a functional outdoor living space that supports the owners’ contemporary lifestyle while remaining sensitive to the original architectural vision and elegance of the home. An Italianate garden, framed by the home’s loggias and a stunning boxwood garden, reinforce the design of the historic property. In contrast, the addition of a pool house and outdoor spa area add a modern touch. A linear lap pool, fountain, patio area, basketball court, and fire pit contrast with elements of the earlier landscape, providing a relaxing private outdoor space with spectacular views of Cranmer Park, and the great Rocky Mountains that dominate the Denver skyline. American Walnut is highly prized as a dense, solid wood that combines natural beauty with resistance to denting and wear. As such it is regarded as the ideal medium for furniture and such as our Ofuro bath. It is also sort after for it natural rich tones and lustrous patterned grain. It requires no artificial staining as its original look is simply beautiful. Nor do its looks change over time. Its robust durability means your Walnut bath will retain its good looks, which as with quality natural wood products, acquire additional beauty and the patina through use and time.

This kitchen remodel was for a large family that usually had a few people working in the kitchen at the same time. So we really want to create a couple work zones. The wood is in keeping with the rest of the house.

THEME The overall theme for this
space is a functional, family friendly
escape where time spent together
or alone is comfortable and exciting.
The integration of the work space,
clubhouse and family entertainment
area creates an environment that
brings the whole family together in
projects, recreation and relaxation.
Each element works harmoniously
together blending the creative and
functional into the perfect family
escape.
FOCUS The two-story clubhouse is
the focal point of the large space and
physically separates but blends the two
distinct rooms. The clubhouse has an
upper level loft overlooking the main
room and a lower enclosed space with
windows looking out into the playroom
and work room. There was a financial
focus for this creative space and the
use of many Ikea products helped to
keep the fabrication and build costs
within budget.
STORAGE Storage is abundant for this
family on the walls, in the cabinets and
even in the floor. The massive built in
cabinets are home to the television
and gaming consoles and the custom
designed peg walls create additional
shelving that can be continually
transformed to accommodate new or
shifting passions. The raised floor is
the base for the clubhouse and fort
but when pulled up, the flush mounted
floor pieces reveal large open storage
perfect for toys to be brushed into
hiding.
GROWTH The entire space is designed
to be fun and you never outgrow
fun. The clubhouse and loft will be a
focus for these boys for years and the
media area will draw the family to
this space whether they are watching
their favorite animated movie or
newest adventure series. The adjoining
workroom provides the perfect arts and
crafts area with moving storage table
and will be well suited for homework
and science fair projects.
SAFETY The desire to climb, jump,
run, and swing is encouraged in this
great space and the attention to detail
ensures that they will be safe. From
the strong cargo netting enclosing
the upper level of the clubhouse to
the added care taken with the lumber
to ensure a soft clean feel without
splintering and the extra wide borders
in the flush mounted floor storage, this
space is designed to provide this family
with a fun and safe space.

With an eye toward accessibility, this bathroom is designed to ease the everyday routines of a homeowner who often uses a wheelchair. Universal design strategies guided the project structurally with ADA-compatible elements incorporated throughout. One side of the vanity is set lower and left intentionally open underneath to accommodate the wheelchair when needed.
Visually, the project shines just as bright with white shaker-style cabinetry balanced by warm tones found elsewhere. Oversized warm gray porcelain wall tile partners beautifully with a diminutive square tile on the shower floor, while brushed nickel hardware and quartz countertops complete a timeless, classic appeal.

When the client spoke with the Delaney Window Fashions LLC workroom designer about the creation of a unique, Hawaiian-themed child’s bedroom, the bright pink and orange paint was already in place, along with the hibiscus floral fabric border. The impetus for the additional work was the transition from a baby’s room with a crib to a little girl’s room with a full-size bed. Although the room was started, it was far from complete.
With a limited amount of the client’s floral fabric, which had subsequently been discontinued, the designer created bedding and pillows and constructed a Hawaiian-themed bed canopy with lights. The homeowner wanted the bedding to be washable but not quilted and the bed crown to be light weight. A tailored, center-pleat bed skirt was created first. The remaining fabric, along with an accent fabric was used to create a comforter, envelope and bolster pillows. The comforter was created with two mitered corners; and micro-cording was purposely added around the middle section to hide the seam. The middle section was hand tacked to secure comforter layers for laundering.
To finish the bedding, a tiki hut-inspired bed crown was created, which was challenging because the material had to be light weight. Including LED garland added a
fun and whimsical element. With child safety in mind, shirred tulle panels were attached to the back and sides of the crown. In this way, the lights were visible, but not accessible to the child.
The project was a success, and the client loves the room. The child’s lighted tiki hut bed crown provided a cozy environment for nightly bedtime stories. It made for one happy little girl!
This project was applied for a competition.

We started with a blank slate on this basement project where our only obstacles were exposed steel support columns, existing plumbing risers from the concrete slab, and dropped soffits concealing ductwork on the ceiling. It had the advantage of tall ceilings, an existing egress window, and a sliding door leading to a newly constructed patio.
This family of five loves the beach and frequents summer beach resorts in the Northeast. Bringing that aesthetic home to enjoy all year long was the inspiration for the décor, as well as creating a family-friendly space for entertaining.
Wish list items included room for a billiard table, wet bar, game table, family room, guest bedroom, full bathroom, space for a treadmill and closed storage. The existing structural elements helped to define how best to organize the basement. For instance, we knew we wanted to connect the bar area and billiards table with the patio in order to create an indoor/outdoor entertaining space. It made sense to use the egress window for the guest bedroom for both safety and natural light. The bedroom also would be adjacent to the plumbing risers for easy access to the new bathroom. Since the primary focus of the family room would be for TV viewing, natural light did not need to filter into that space. We made sure to hide the columns inside of newly constructed walls and dropped additional soffits where needed to make the ceiling mechanicals feel less random.
In addition to the beach vibe, the homeowner has valuable sports memorabilia that was to be prominently displayed including two seats from the original Yankee stadium.
For a coastal feel, shiplap is used on two walls of the family room area. In the bathroom shiplap is used again in a more creative way using wood grain white porcelain tile as the horizontal shiplap “wood”. We connected the tile horizontally with vertical white grout joints and mimicked the horizontal shadow line with dark grey grout. At first glance it looks like we wrapped the shower with real wood shiplap. Materials including a blue and white patterned floor, blue penny tiles and a natural wood vanity checked the list for that seaside feel.
A large reclaimed wood door on an exposed sliding barn track separates the family room from the game room where reclaimed beams are punctuated with cable lighting. Cabinetry and a beverage refrigerator are tucked behind the rolling bar cabinet (that doubles as a Blackjack table!). A TV and upright video arcade machine round-out the entertainment in the room. Bar stools, two rotating club chairs, and large square poufs along with the Yankee Stadium seats provide fun places to sit while having a drink, watching billiards or a game on the TV.
Signed baseballs can be found behind the bar, adjacent to the billiard table, and on specially designed display shelves next to the poker table in the family room.
Thoughtful touches like the surfboards, signage, photographs and accessories make a visitor feel like they are on vacation at a well-appointed beach resort without being cliché.
