With their recently purchased home, the clients wanted to add a pool & spa to their backyard, with a space for entertaining. They also needed a new driveway with additional parking spots, without disturbing their entire front yard.
To address their needs and reflect their taste and lifestyle, a design with a broad set of stairs which opens out to the landscape, descending to a perched pool, was developed. A parapet wall provides an edge to the pool, while woodland plantings frame the view to the conservation area and transcends the boundary between yard and wild.

Blue tile and ceramic tile single-sink living room photo in San Francisco with blue walls, an undermount sink, quartz countertops, a hinged shower door and white countertops

We had a several challenges to face with this project. Not only did we need to update a dated landscape to accommodate two seemingly different design tastes (modern & minimalistic vs natural english garden), we were tasked with improving the property’s drainage, improving the driveway access, reducing water usage and plant maintenance, and fixing a crumbling wall.
To marry the two design tastes, we started with the more modern elements of metal planters and softened the landscape with mass plantings of ornamental grasses and native sedge. These grasses act as a turf replacement that do not need to be mowed and require less regular watering. On each side of the yard we constructed new cedar fences to provide updated and additional privacy. In addition, we poured a new concrete wall to replace the existing retaining wall and play off the new modern vibe.

The homeowners, parents with two young children, desired a backyard oasis where they could entertain with large groups of family and friends. With the backyard being very steep and up against a conservation easement, we had a narrow space to create within.
We designed and installed a multi-tiered backyard that offered multiple outdoor living spaces, namely: a swimming pool patio/pavilion platform, lawn terrace, and an upper deck. The swimming pool features three waterfalls and two dive rocks surrounding a “C”-shaped underwater bench.
The pavilion platform has the effect of being a treehouse with open walls and being 15’ above the forest floor. In addition, the pavilion features a grand masonry fireplace. The upper deck features an outdoor kitchen.

Located near the base of Scottsdale landmark Pinnacle Peak, the Desert Prairie is surrounded by distant peaks as well as boulder conservation easements. This 30,710 square foot site was unique in terrain and shape and was in close proximity to adjacent properties. These unique challenges initiated a truly unique piece of architecture.
Planning of this residence was very complex as it weaved among the boulders. The owners were agnostic regarding style, yet wanted a warm palate with clean lines. The arrival point of the design journey was a desert interpretation of a prairie-styled home. The materials meet the surrounding desert with great harmony. Copper, undulating limestone, and Madre Perla quartzite all blend into a low-slung and highly protected home.
Located in Estancia Golf Club, the 5,325 square foot (conditioned) residence has been featured in Luxe Interiors + Design’s September/October 2018 issue. Additionally, the home has received numerous design awards.
