When VICI Salon and Beauty School decided to open a new location; Ron Thomas, director of corporate operations, had an important goal: find furniture that embodied the modern look of the location. “Style,” Ron says, “is our sole reason for being.” Ron worked with Dan Wilkens, account executive at National Business Furniture, to find furniture that reflected the look and feel of VICI salons, yet was durable enough to withstand the heavy day-to-day traffic of a salon. Chairs and stools from Izzy provided clients and students a comfortable seat to relax. The chairs’ modern look extended the eye-catching design of the interior, and the plastic back and seat are impervious to hair color. For the offices and conference room, Dan recommended furniture that was stylish, comfortable and space-efficient. The result was a fashionable space where clients and staff are greeted with style and comfort every day. In other words, VICI looks good while making you look good.

This solid Tiger Maple desk unit was built for a client's Wellesley home several years ago. The new owners of the home called me recently to dismantle the unit in order to reclaim the space as the front sitting room. The piece was designed with this eventuality in mind so it came out in sections leaving only a few easily spackled screw holes in the wall. The components were stored and as far as I know, may be available for sale. If interested, contact me and I can inquire.

Home office - contemporary home office idea

This two bedroom apartment is located in a converted loft building dating from 1881 near Gramercy Park in Manhattan. The design involved the complete remodeling of the apartment, including a new open plan kitchen with an island overlooking the living area. The existing building fabric becomes part of the redesigned space in the form of an exposed cast iron column and an uncovered brickwork wall. These simple moves serve as tectonic reminders of the building's history while being juxtaposed with the modern fixtures and finishes that form the rest of the apartment. Natural light is drawn into the hallway by inserting a glass clerestory over a new storage wall. Cabinetry in the living, kitchen and bedroom spaces is built into the walls to maximize storage areas while creating a fully integrated architectural solution throughout the apartment. Artificial lighting is discreetly added through light coves, recessed ceiling fixtures and under cabinet lights. A warm, yet limited palette of materials include American walnut, limestone and bright red full height closet doors - located in the children's bedroom. www.archphoto.com
