This rear addition provides the family with a living area that has lots of natural light for the family to enjoy and relax. The cathedral ceiling creates an open and airy space that is well lit from the side and rear windows. The cathedral ceiling also flows into the washroom. Light is very important to this family and due to the close proximity to the neighbours on either side, fire shutters were required and incorporated on all the side windows. The basement is a finished space with a bar, washroom, family room, and a dedicated room for the family’s adopted cats. Exterior was finished with matching brick that was sourced and still available.

Our vision for this space was to incorporate old world, handmade elements and the European lifestyle that our clients adopted during their time living abroad. The handmade ceramic and brass light fixtures along with the brass plumbing fittings and hardware balance the cool toned solid wood cabinetry. The Catalina Belgian Bluestone is inspired by Bruges' cobbled streets yet it presents a smooth satin finish with rough edging that has been over-grouted for comfort.
We chose energy efficient appliances that appealed to our clients' lifestyle by incorporating an electric induction cooktop with usable drawers situated underneath for large pot and pan storage along with electric wall ovens. Using panel ready appliances and adding a small crown above the refrigerator and pantry wall cabinets ensures these large appliances feel more like furniture. The custom plaster hood surround and small niche evokes old world curves and movement, a detail that truly spoke to our client. Bringing in an antique rug provides that time-worn finishing tough that a new space begs for; we cannot get enough of the finish space!

The outdoor kitchen adopts an industrial theme with its exposed concrete beams and polished concrete floor. Cascading greenery from the overhead open shelving breathes life into the monochromatic space, offering a stark yet harmonious contrast. The centerpiece is a robust island with a textured front panel, which provides a practical yet aesthetically pleasing work area, complemented by modern stainless steel appliances and fixtures that reflect the natural light streaming in from the large windows.

Independent dedicated pantry space with customized L-shaped corner cabinet layout. One side is designed with multi-tier open adjustable shelves for jarred spices, bottled drinks, packaged food and household sundries; the other side adopts full-height seamless handleless closed tall cabinets to store oversized bulk groceries, paper goods and seasonal supplies. Ceiling spotlights provide even illumination for inventory arrangement and picking, all cabinet panels use anti-dry-cracking treatment fit for LA’s arid weather, avoiding panel shrinkage and gap expansion caused by long-term low humidity environment. This independent pantry design frees up main kitchen counter space, a highly favored storage upgrade for large LA family villas.

As we move into the 21st century, more and more people are moving away from the stove/cooktop combination and adopting a separate, stacked oven with a separate cooktop. This allows for easier access to the ovens with less bending down and lifting of hot objects, but also allows for extra storage under the cooktop. This client decided on deep drawers instead of doors, which allows her to store and retrieve her pots and pans with much more ease than having to cram everything into a shelf.
