Pictured: Blue Bottle Sutter Street, San Francisco Lincoln Lighthill Architect's design of this cafe takes its inspiration from an eclectic mix of influences, including early 20th century architecture, mid-century modernism, and 1970’s Hi-Fi style. The luminous soffit wrapping the back walls of the cafe is an ode to the curtainwall, that now ubiquitous but once glamorous building technology pioneered by the noteworthy neighbor down the street, the 1918 Willis Polk-designed Hallidie Building at 130 Sutter, the first structure in the U.S. with a glass curtain wall facade. The small steel I-beams that adorn the soffit and give structure to the cafe’s furnishings reference another key moment in the history of the curtainwall from 3,000 miles away and 35 years later, Mies van de Rohe’s Seagram Building in Manhattan, which utilizes these steel shapes for both structure and decoration. The cafe’s curtain wall performs multiple functions: its perforated, frosted acrylic skin diffuses light and filters sound, which is trapped in the gap between it and the soft acoustic paneling behind. Lighting above and below provides ambient, task and accent lighting. The furnishings are made from Tricoya, a medium-density fiber board (MDF) made from sustainable wood sources and coated in a no-VOC, natural oil finish. The stainless steel countertops and aforementioned I-beams are made from 90% recycled materials. The marble customer tables reference the grandeur of the neighborhood’s historic buildings and provide a counterpoint to the otherwise restrained material palate. The cafe’s last and most significant influence appears as you approach the service bar. Blue Bottle’s founder is an audiophile and fan of classic analog stereo equipment. Riffing on the perforated theme of the curtain wall and channeling our inner James Freeman, the outer surface of the bar is covered in a CNC-milled pattern of chamfered holes which expose a dark layer below, imbuing the café with a bit of stereophonic speaker cabinet style.

While keeping the space clean and sparse, they were also searching for a good measure of warmth, creativity, uniqueness, and fun! Last, but certainly not least, the space had to withstand serious cooking and socializing - functionality was a vital part of the mix. Tom and Eva suggested Artcraft Cabinetry (Bilotta's European-styled line made in Canada) in pure white gloss, flat paneled doors and drawers with a channel system. The upper cabinets are glass fronted and framed in aluminum to make it easy to see at a glance where everything is and to show off their collection of glassware and dishes - so it appears to be a real-life, inviting space. The walnut island back panel and TV surround are custom made by MJ Woodworking and beautifully compliment the clean white gloss cabinets and panels. This walnut was repeated in many other areas of the home, tying it all beautifully together. The island seats two, which is perfect for every day snacks. One side of it has open shelves for cookbooks; the other has a waterfall edged countertop made of a blue recycled glass. The range, hood, and microwave are by Wolf, while the refrigeration is all by Sun-Zero paneled in the white gloss cabinets. The paneled dishwasher is by Miele, stainless undermount sink by Julian, custom designed by Eva, and faucet by Dornbracht. Countertop materials range from the aforementioned blue glass to stainless steel to Pure White by Caesarstone. The backsplash behind the sink is a special custom colored blue glass that up close appears to have drops of water on it. We here at PBC love a great project, especially when it involves one of our favorite local non-profit organizations. Kids Making It is a youth woodworking program that teaches valuable vocational, entrepreneurial and life skills to at-risk, low income, and disadvantaged kids. At KMI they strive to keep local kids in school, out of trouble, and on a path to a successful future. It is an amazing organization that is all heart, and one that we are proud to have been involved with for several years. When Jimmy Pierce, founder and executive director of KMI, came to PBC with a specific need (more space) and general idea of what he wanted we knew that we had to be a part of it. As with all of our projects, the addition to the current Kids Making It building started as a design-build consultation. We called upon our friend and amazing architect Rob Romero to sit down with us, along with Jimmy and KMI program director, Andy Crowther to discuss the possibilities. The specific focus was on creating a space that KMI could use as they continued to grow their organization. Jimmy and Andy wanted a place where they could train the students in new trades and take the wood-working that they had already learned a step further. They needed open and they needed BIG. That’s where the timber framing came in. Timber framing is a style of building construction that uses heavy timber frames as opposed to more slender lumber. It is post and beam construction, built like furniture using wood joinery to hold the framing in place. This type of construction has been around for hundreds of years but isn’t used as commonly as it once was due to the high cost of materials and specialized tradespeople that it requires. That’s where Atlantic Barn and Timber Company came in, they heard about the need and answered the call. Very graciously, they offered to erect the timber framing for free. And just like that the materials and equipment arrived, the frames were assembled, stood up, and secured in place…all on that little corner of 7th and Castle Street. At 2,257 square feet, the first floor will be the home to the new storefront, a large (class)room, and a storage bay for donated materials. The second floor of the addition will measure 1,982 square feet and offer an open space, offices, a full bathroom, conference room, and aforementioned decks overlooking the front and the rear of the building. PBC Design + Build is beyond proud to be a part of such a wonderful project, and we consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to aid in KMI’s mission.
