Expanding the kitchen without a costly addition, allowed the client to invest money in a small addition to the rear of the home for the new family room in the former screen-in porch, which also inclucd updates to the home's exterior. The result: plenty of bang for their buck!

We sourced encaustic tile for both bathrooms and kitchen floors to channel the aforementioned Mediterranean-inspired aesthetic that exudes both modernism and tradition.

This project involved removing a failing deck and drainage system. Our construction crew installed a brand new deck with Azek Timbertech mahogany decking and their composite railing system with mahogany drink rail. This deck also included a hidden door system and slat detail around the base. We also plumbed a quick connect gas line to eliminate the client having to worry about filling grill tanks. Our landscape construction teams also installed a brand new drainage system around the entire property that will manage roof, gutter, and downspout water in conjunction with surface water. This contemporary New York City kitchen was designed by architect Eva Bouhassira from Hastings-on-Hudson NY and the cabinets were provided by Bilotta Kitchens of NY designer Tom Vecchio. They also worked with August Construction Group of Yonkers, NY as the general contractor. The owners were looking for a decisively modern environment. While keeping the space clean and sparse, they were also searching for a good measure of warmth, creativity, uniqueness, and fun! Last, but certainly not least, the space had to withstand serious cooking and socializing - functionality was a vital part of the mix. Tom and Eva suggested Artcraft Cabinetry (Bilotta's European-styled line made in Canada) in pure white gloss, flat paneled doors and drawers with a channel system. The upper cabinets are glass fronted and framed in aluminum to make it easy to see at a glance where everything is and to show off their collection of glassware and dishes - so it appears to be a real-life, inviting space. The walnut island back panel and TV surround are custom made by MJ Woodworking and beautifully compliment the clean white gloss cabinets and panels. This walnut was repeated in many other areas of the home, tying it all beautifully together. The island seats two, which is perfect for every day snacks. One side of it has open shelves for cookbooks; the other has a waterfall edged countertop made of a blue recycled glass. The range, hood, and microwave are by Wolf, while the refrigeration is all by Sun-Zero paneled in the white gloss cabinets. The paneled dishwasher is by Miele, stainless undermount sink by Julian, custom designed by Eva, and faucet by Dornbracht. Countertop materials range from the aforementioned blue glass to stainless steel to Pure White by Caesarstone. The backsplash behind the sink is a special custom colored blue glass that up close appears to have drops of water on it. The floor is porcelain tile, Kauri from Artistic Tile .The kitchen is an U-shape and opens up to a large dining and living area with beautiful views of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The following job was a bit different from the kitchen and hallway restorations we normally get asked to do, in fact this request came from the vicar of St. Mary’s Church in Far Cotton who wanted us to restore some beautiful old Quarry tiles which lead up to the main aisle. The church dates back to 1885 and given the wear on some of the tiles I can only assume they date back to the same Victorian period; the church is a really welcoming, community-focused place, so it was a pleasure for me to be asked to complete the work. The vicar’s main concern was the large amount of melted candle wax around the font – so much so that this his normal cleaners had been unable to remove it. He also wanted to know if the floors could be sealed to make ongoing maintenance easier – and this was certainly something we would be able to provide. The following photos show the condition of the floor before we started. The next photo shows the work in progress from halfway down the aisle. We started by breaking down any old sealer and the troublesome candle wax, using a black stripping pad in combination of Tile Doctor Pro Clean to deep clean the floor. Since Pro Clean, a high alkaline cleaner, is highly versatile and can be used on all kinds of natural stone and tile. While the church has cleaners that come in regularly to keep the building tidy for the parishioners, the old tiles really benefitted from a deep clean which tackled the stubborn ingrained dirt and staining that had built up over many years. Once I was satisfied that the tiles had been cleaned to the best of my abilities, they were then left for two weeks to fully dry as it is an old church and, understandably, there were some inherent damp issues. As aforementioned, the vicar was keen to have the tiles sealed to make them easier to keep clean and protect them against ingrained dirt and staining for the future. There are only a few situations in which we wouldn’t recommend sealing tiles, such as if they are patio tiles which will already be under constant exposure to the weather. The best choice of sealer for this particular situation was Tile Doctor Colour Grow, which is an impregnating, breathable sealer that won’t trap moisture in the floor and will provide great protection against further staining. Additionally, as an impregnating sealer, Colour Grow penetrates into the pores of the tile protecting it from within and with the added benefit of enhancing the natural colours and restoring the life and character back in the old, dull tiles. I applied it using a paint pad, before polishing it off. I’m pleased to report that the restoration was a great success. The vicar was very impressed with the work, and I’m sure the church community will also be very happy with the new, vibrant tiles. Phil Vissian Northamptonshire Tile Doctor
