Living room - mid-sized contemporary formal and open concept light wood floor living room idea in Boston with a ribbon fireplace and a wood fireplace surround

Inspiration for a small transitional u-shaped medium tone wood floor and brown floor open concept kitchen remodel in New York with an undermount sink, recessed-panel cabinets, white cabinets, solid surface countertops, white backsplash, stainless steel appliances, no island and white countertops

The original patio was about 274 square feet and we added 352 square feet. The total entertaining space is now over 600 square feet! The house also backs up to water so they wanted an outdoor space to spend watching the beautiful backdrop.
As we extended the roof line, the homeowners agreed that an open gable would be too open, therefore we ended up with the hip roof with an added, smaller open gable. That allows some additional natural light to come through with their high living room windows. The fireplace was placed in the corner next to the home wall rather than out on the perimeter because we didn't want to take away from the view to the back. The outdoor kitchen is situated conveniently near the back door for transferring kitchen items.

Like many, this family spends a lot time in the back half of their home. Built in 1988, the kitchen and family room were cramped and dimly lit. With this remodel, they wanted a larger space to provide both an updated gourmet kitchen and a family room suitable for entertaining.
While unsure of what new products and current styles to incorporate, these empty-nesters definitely had some notions of what they didn’t like although they didn’t always agree. They wanted the two rooms to flow comfortably and to present an integrated design. Voila – an entertaining space was born and they absolutely love it!

Designed with an open floor plan and layered outdoor spaces, the Onaway is a perfect cottage for narrow lakefront lots. The exterior features elements from both the Shingle and Craftsman architectural movements, creating a warm cottage feel. An open main level skillfully disguises this narrow home by using furniture arrangements and low built-ins to define each spaces’ perimeter. Every room has a view to each other as well as a view of the lake. The cottage feel of this home’s exterior is carried inside with a neutral, crisp white, and blue nautical themed palette. The kitchen features natural wood cabinetry and a long island capped by a pub height table with chairs. Above the garage, and separate from the main house, is a series of spaces for plenty of guests to spend the night. The symmetrical bunk room features custom staircases to the top bunks with drawers built in. The best views of the lakefront are found on the master bedrooms private deck, to the rear of the main house. The open floor plan continues downstairs with two large gathering spaces opening up to an outdoor covered patio complete with custom grill pit.

The owners, inspired by mid-century modern architecture, hired Klopf Architecture to design an Eichler-inspired 21st-Century, energy efficient new home that would replace a dilapidated 1940s home. The home follows the gentle slope of the hillside while the overarching post-and-beam roof above provides an unchanging datum line. The changing moods of nature animate the house because of views through large glass walls at nearly every vantage point. Every square foot of the house remains close to the ground creating and adding to the sense of connection with nature.

The new owners of this 1974 Post and Beam home originally contacted us for help furnishing their main floor living spaces. But it wasn’t long before these delightfully open minded clients agreed to a much larger project, including a full kitchen renovation. They were looking to personalize their “forever home,” a place where they looked forward to spending time together entertaining friends and family.
In a bold move, we proposed teal cabinetry that tied in beautifully with their ocean and mountain views and suggested covering the original cedar plank ceilings with white shiplap to allow for improved lighting in the ceilings. We also added a full height panelled wall creating a proper front entrance and closing off part of the kitchen while still keeping the space open for entertaining. Finally, we curated a selection of custom designed wood and upholstered furniture for their open concept living spaces and moody home theatre room beyond.

Our clients call this the "Grand Room" and we agree! The woodwork and the large floral artwork are all that remain from the original space we inherited! Our mission was to meld the old and the new together - The historic feel of the home but with more modern furnishings and decor to fit with our client's youthful lifestyle and young family. The oversized chandelier was the Great find as it just set off the room perfectly! The white sheer draperies are automated by remote. Before we came along this room remained mostly empty and was just a "downer" for our clients each time they arrived home.. Happily, this is now the couple's favorite room in the home as everyone who enters let's out a big "WOW!!!! and it is a beautiful space to spend time in.
