We were approached by a young couple to design and build an addition to their 1950’s concrete block house. Like many of our projects, the addition became more than a new living room and bedroom suite; it became an opportunity to create an outdoor room. As it was, the only connection to the backyard and outdoors was through a side door that bisected an already cramped kitchen. It became apparent early on that adding on to the back of the house was our best strategy and we offset our addition to the west side of the house in order to create an outdoor ‘room.’ From the existing house you step down to the new living room and walk out onto a elevated lawn which is created by two raised landscaping walls. The Owner’s bedroom suite is located above the new living room and became a sort of ‘tree house’ for the couple. Lowered horizontal windows facing East and West do not frame a particular view, but instead cut a slice through their surrounding neighborhood and beyond. Although we did not find a pot o’ gold buried in the walls or backyard, as our clients hoped; we were able to work within their budget and transform their house. The shower walls are recycled slate roof shingles which are accented by a green glass tile. A solar tube in the shower provides daylight which is reflected into the room through a full length mirror above the vanity.

This project was designed for a couple who lives in Florida but wanted to create a mountain getaway here in Virginia. This was a dramatic, full home renovation project which converted a 1970’s vinyl siding covered, quasi-modern home into a cozy yet open, mountain lodge retreat with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge mountains. A large wrap around porch was added as well as a beautiful screened in porch for the enjoyment and full appreciation of the surrounding landscapes. While the overall interior layout remained relatively unchanged, new elements were introduced, such as a two-story stone fireplace, a residential elevator, a new master bedroom, updated kitchen and reclaimed wood paneling finishing the walls. While you catch a glimpse of the stunning vista while approaching the house, the full view is best appreciated from the new screened in porch or cedar hot tub which sets you right out into nature. This renovation project transformed an existing two-car garage into a pool/guest house. We engaged the building with the existing pool area by opening up the side of the building with a 16′ wide sliding glass door system. We opened the space vertically by removing the ceiling joists and extending a new wood slat wall up and across the ceiling. A slate-faced entertainment center was built into the wood wall, incorporating a flat screen TV, gas fireplace, stereo components and game storage. Our clients encouraged us to think of this new space as an extended living room for the family. It is a space that can accommodate a kids’ pool party in the morning and a cocktail party that evening. Tucked in the back, and open to a private view of fields beyond, is a guest bedroom. This will allow the family to ‘camp out’ in the pool house while undertaking a renovation to the main house in the future.

Photographer: Tom Crane Made of 300, 10-foot steel blades set upright 8 inches apart, the award winning Cor-Ten Cattails Sculptural fence was designed for a home in Berwyn, Pennsylvania as a yard sculpture that also keeps deer out. Made of COR-TEN, a steel alloy that eliminates the need for painting and maintains a rich, dark rust color without corroding, the fence stanchions were cut with a plasma cutter from sheets of the alloy. Each blade stands 8 feet above grade, set in concrete 3 feet below, weighs 80-90 pounds and is 5/8 inch thick. The profile of the blades is an irregular trapezoid with no horizontal connections or supports. Only the gate has two horizontal bars, and each leaf weighs 1200 pounds.

With any large renovation our team works hard to ensure that the same style is present across each change. When multiple parts of the home are being redone we sometimes work in phases to make the process easier for our clients. During the first phase of this project, our team renovated the client's bathroom, bedroom, and created a home office. In the last phase we focused on the kitchen where we removed a wall to join the breakfast nook and the newly renovated kitchen into a single room. Without adding any square footage, we created a larger, more livable space that has better light and more storage than before.

Alloy co-owner Zach Snider had a tiny second floor on his house. Being an expert builder, he thought he would just take that second floor right off and build a new one. And that he did, along with pushing the kitchen out to where the screened porch was, building a sauna, and re-thinking every other room in the house. The footprint of the house is the same, and it still fits in with the character of the neighborhood, even though Zach doubled the square footage. The house now has room for his two little kids to grow and to find their own space without everyone bumping into each other. And if that doesn’t work, you’ll probably find their parents down in the sauna.
