This was a complete front yard overhaul from 2015. Existing conditions included a 110' L x 8't x 8' W laurel hedge, and some shoddy grass. We scraped the site clean, imported close to 60 cubic yards of compost and nutrient mulch, and had to amend the soil. We planted 6 fruit trees (Asian pears, cherry, plums, and apples). We planted blueberries, strawberries, lingberries, elderberries, serviceberries, currants, jostaberries, Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo), and much more. We planted over 2 dozen variety of culinary and medicinal herb plants, and along the street did a mixture of sedums, grasses, and other drought tolerant plants. Along the garage #2, we set up a simple trellis for a passion flower.

The existing lawn area remained saturated throughout most of the year and the runoff from the neighboring property ran across their back yard, down the side of their property and all the way to the sidewalk in front of their house. The water was so intense that it had begun to cut through the back yard and erode the soil across the sidewalk and into the nearby storm drain. By identifying these drainage problems and discussing solutions with the homeowner, we were able to design and create the aesthetically pleasing and sustainable solution of a rain garden. The goal was to slow down storm water runoff, and catch pollution and sediment by creating a rain garden that acts as a filter prior to entering the storm drain, while enhancing the aesthetics of the property. The rain garden created was a shallow depression, 12 - 16" deep that collects rainfall runoff from all downspouts of the home and water collected into perforated pipes underneath the lawn area. The perforated pipe begins at the highest elevation in the yard and ends in the rain garden, the new lowest elevation that has been excavated down to an 8" depth. The perforated pipe captures the runoff water and allows the water to seep slowly back into the ground as it runs across the property and into the garden. The garden was lined with a geotextile filter fabric to aide in removing contaminants from the water, prevent migration of the stone in to the soil, and minimalize maintenance. A large variety of plant material was chosen, focusing mainly on native wetland species for their tolerance of our local soil types, moisture conditions and the habitat they provide for wildlife. The garden was abundant with native wildlife and was a sustainable ecosystem for birds and butterflies upon completion of the project. After planting, we arranged decorative stone throughout the garden to slow the flow of water and help prevent erosion. The combination of vegetative and stone surfaces provides temporary storage for runoff before the water either evaporates or infiltrates the soil. The surrounding beds throughout the property were also all amended with compost and replanted with plants that work in harmony with the rain garden. The front, side, and rear yards are a beautiful display of colors that bloom throughout the seasons and the plants throughout the entire property provide food and shelter for native wildlife. The rear yard that was once a muddy play space for the kids is now a dry lawn space that can be utilized by the family and their neighbors. This iteration is made entirely from solid walnut and held together with dovetail joinery. The pieces in the Simone Collection juxtapose disparate design eras and traditions. The dovetails are a longtime favorite of traditional woodworkers and are as beautiful as they are strong; spaced in irregular intervals, they offer visual complexity to an otherwise understated form. On the other hand, the hand-rubbed, Danish oil and wax finish recalls Scandinavian modernism. Tables and benches available exclusively in walnut with a Danish oil and wax finish.

The goal of the project was to remodel a small 1922 bathroom into a bathroom that would meet the needs of a 76 year old client who intends to age in place. The client needed more surface space and storage, more light, safer access to bathing (the old tub was a barrier) with easy care surfaces all with in the same foot print. The existing bathroom was taken to the studs and re-framed to accommodate changes in plumbing fixtures and amend other confining framing issues in adjacent walls. Sculptural agaves, succulents and California native plants punctuate the front landscape complementing the “arroyo seco” rain garden studded with boulders and branches. The rain garden catches 50% of the stormwater runoff from the roof and infiltrates it into the soil. The remaining 50% of the runoff goes to a second rain garden in the back yard.

The uneven back yard was graded into ¬upper and lower levels with an industrial style, concrete wall. Linear pavers lead the garden stroller from place to place alongside a rain garden filled with swaying grasses that spans the side yard and culminates at a gracefully arching pomegranate tree, The transformation was completed with a bold and biodiverse selection of low water, climate appropriate plants that make the space come alive. branches laden with impossibly red blossoms and fruit. The elements of a sustainable habitat garden have been designed into the ¬lush landscape. One hundred percent of rainwater runoff is diverted into the two large rain gardens which infiltrate stormwater runoff into the soil. After building up the soil with tons of organic amendments, we added permeable hardscape elements, a water feature, native and climate appropriate plants - including an exceedingly low-water Kurapia lawn - and drip irrigation with a smart timer. With these practices we’ve created a sumptuous wildlife habitat that has become a haven for migratory birds & butterflies.
