To ensure complete all-weather rain protection, the design team overlapped the pergola roof with the home’s roofline to provide the same seamless feel as a pergola attached to the house. Covering this massive patio also meant the captured rain waters needed to be dispersed to keep the patio below dry. To accommodate the heavy anticipated flow, the hidden internal gutter system split runoff from the six pergola zones and deposited it in numerous surrounding planter beds.

Morpurgo Architects enhanced the approach to this French Provincial home by modifying the long driveway to create a circular courtyard in front of the house, thereby elevating the sense of anticipation prior to entering. We expanded the undefined front foyer, so that the new vestibule with grand staircase and mosaic flooring would be worthy of this significant home. In redesigning the kitchen, we concurrently opened the family room wall and extended it to meet a windowed corridor with a floor-to-ceiling glass space that blurs the distinction between the two rooms. The passageway, infused with sunlight, provides expansive views to the verdant landscaped property. As part of the overall expansion of this home, Morpurgo Architects increased the size of the wing that contains a family room, cabana, playroom and garage space. A new master bedroom wing was constructed as a bookend, establishing a symmetry for the French Provincial façade. This suite contains a sitting room, bedroom area with a tray ceiling, spacious closets and elegant bathrooms.

These clients own a very unique home, originally constructed circa 1760 and extensively renovated in 2008. They were seeking some additional space for home exercise, but didn’t necessarily want to disturb the existing structure, nor did they want to live through construction with a young child. Additionally, they were seeking to create a better area for outdoor entertaining in anticipation of installing an in-ground pool within the next few years. This new pavilion combines all of the above features, while complementing the materials of the existing home. This modest 1-story structure features an entertaining / kitchenette area and a private and separate space for the homeowner’s home exercise studio.

AVDG oversaw a wide array of technology integrations for this stunning residential property in Woodside, California. An ambitious project from the start, the family tore down their existing house to build a modern smart home, equipped with the latest innovations in automation and audiovisual systems. AVDG’s experts guided the client through all phases of the project, providing insight and options to meet the family’s specific needs. AVDG also worked closely with the general contractor, partnering on everything from wire placement to security system integration. In addition to the technology integrations in the 7,786-square-foot home, the project also included work on two additional structures: a pool house and an in-law unit. Homeowners Carol and John Hamilton had braced themselves for the challenges of completing such an ambitious undertaking, but they soon found that AVDG’s problem-solving and project management would make the project far smoother than they anticipated.

PebbleTec® Tahoe Blue pool built by Texas Pools. Builder Paul Ryan said,“They were anticipating a 'country cottage' feel to this home when they purchased it. They were never really happy with it, until the pool showed up! The pool needed to feel like a meandering stream as it made its way down to the lower level. Views were important, and keeping the rear pond view was paramount. So, by manipulating the shape of the pool, adding an oversize flag stone shelf in the water, and providing a soothing 'trickling' waterfall, the image was complete. From the rear patio it looks and feels like you are sitting next to a back country stream. The design of the house was a bit unusual in that the rear patio angled back towards the other side of the house. This made it extremely difficult to design the pool in such a way that it seemed to be a meandering stream and still make it a functional swim space. The large flagstone tanning shelf did the trick and added that little bit of extra realism for the home owners.”
