A post-war, Glen Park house was dark and tiny but had good bones and imaginable city views. It was one of those “little boxes on the hillside”. Our design transformed and expanded it into a bright, open, and comfortable four bedroom townhouse with panoramic city views. A huge new sliding skylight/roof hatch above an open staircase illuminates and seamlessly connects the central living and circulation spaces. All bedrooms plus a family room/guest suite are oriented towards the rear and front of house, ensuring direct connection to the out of doors, and privacy from family gathering spaces. The home is modern but has touches of warm traditional styling, anticipating a family with kids, a couple who enjoy entertaining, and or folks who like hunkering down with a good book and a morning cup of coffee. Our design for the expansion and gut renovation of a small 1200 square foot house in a residential neighborhood triples is size, and reworks the living arrangement. The rear addition takes advantage of southern exposure with a "greenhouse" room that provides solar heat gain in winter, shading in summer, and a vast connection to the rear yard. Architecturally, we used an approach we call "willful practicality." The new soaring ceiling ties together first and second floors in a dramatic volumetric expansion of space, while providing increased ventilation and daylighting from greenhouse to operable windows and skylights at the peak. Exterior pockets of space are created from curved forces pushing in from outside to form cedar clad porch and stoop. Sustainable design is employed throughout all materials, energy systems and insulation. Masonry exterior walls and concrete floors provide thermal mass for the interior by insulating the exterior. An ERV system facilitates increased air changes and minimizes changes to the interior air temperature. Energy and water saving features and renewable, non-toxic materal selections are important aspects of the house design. Environmental community issues are addressed with a drywell in the side yard to mitigate rain runoff into the town sewer system. The long sloping south facing roof is in anticipation of future solar panels, with the standing seam metal roof providing anchoring opportunities for the panels. The exterior walls are clad in stucco, cedar, and cement-fiber panels defining different areas of the house. Closed cell spray insulation is applied to exterior walls and roof, giving the house an "air-tight" seal against air infiltration and a high R-value. The ERV system provides the ventilation needed with this tight envelope. After years of dedication and anticipation, our clients embarked on their dream renovation project as they approached retirement. Their vision? A cozy yet elegant space nestled in the picturesque coastal town of Ipswich, MA. With the help of Betsy at Hutton Home Design, our skilled team, and many trade partners, our client’s vision became a reality. We built them a custom, one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) over the garage of their daughter and son-in-law's home. The heating and cooling system consisted of mini split units. We cantilevered the second floor to add space to the kitchen, making the room seem larger. We created a functional and beautiful space within the zoning constraints of 900 square feet. All the while, careful consideration was given to scale and ensuring the addition looked like an extension of the existing home. Woodinville WA Phased Farmhouse Transformation Project Project Overview In Woodinville, WA, our team at M3Decks & Outdoor Living executed a multi-phase, three-year transformation of a 1970s woody walk-up home, converting it into a stunning farmhouse-style retreat. This project, tailored to the client’s vision, showcases our expertise in custom deck construction, structural enhancements, and outdoor living solutions, with a focus on quality and timeless design. Project Phases Phase 1: Deck and Entry Deck (Year 1) Scope: Designed and constructed a composite deck using premium TimberTech materials, paired with a welcoming entry deck to enhance curb appeal. The DrySpace system ensured weather protection for the under-deck area. Outcome: The covered deck became a year-round outdoor oasis, while the DrySpace addition increased the home’s functional space, adding value and versatility. Phase 3: Hardscaping (Planned for Year 3) Scope: Scheduled to return for the final phase, which will focus on hardscaping to complete the outdoor transformation. Plans include a stamped concrete patio, planter boxes with Pacific Northwest-native plants, and a fire pit to enhance the farmhouse vibe. Goals: Create a cohesive outdoor environment that integrates with the existing deck and roof structures, prioritizing biophilic design principles for a natural, inviting space. Anticipated Outcome: The hardscaping will finalize the property’s evolution into a luxurious, functional outdoor retreat, perfect for entertaining and relaxation. The roof on this home in Rolling Hills has been removed; the plumbing and heater vent pipes have been move up and away from the solar array. The new underlayment and composition roof has been started in anticipation of the 70+ roof flashings for the panel mounting rails. The old roof tiles saved will be used to frame the finished array. A 34 panel solar photovoltaic system and 8 pool solar heat collectors will be installed on this south facing roof. All Design and Installation Performed by Howe Custom Home Builders.

Equipment access presented a significant challenge for the construction crews. The pre-assembled Latham fiberglass swimming pool needed to be craned in from the street! Neighbors and crews watched in anticipation as the homeowners' new swimming pool soared over their rooftops.

Designing our 3rd home for this long-standing client was a real treat when she moved to a big, bright, newly built home in Celina. Being entrusted with every aspect from the floor to the ceiling, down to the last accessory we filled this home with color, comfort and casual elegance. The client was ready for some out of the box thinking and more progressive design ideas from where she’d been in the past. The moody media room, jewel box home office and color pops in the family room exemplify how a home can evoke many different emotions and represent all of the different styles that appeal to her. The backyard is now a relaxing paradise with covered lounging space, an expansive pool, a putting green and a firepit area for intimate fireside chats. Home is now the haven the client anticipated we would create for her and told us she has to sometimes pinch herself to remind her that all this is really hers!

Nautical-themed hybrid swimming pool with raised spa, sunshelf, slide, grotto, and pizza oven (September 2013) – Ask the Pool Guy and his team at Legendary Escapes recently unveiled the newest Legendary Escape, a stunning nautical-themed hybrid swimming pool. The hand-carved concrete waterfall, rock slide, and grotto are the focal point of this incredible project, and designer and builder Al Curtis has truly outdone himself this time. Behind the waterfall sits a grotto that seats 8-10 people comfortably. The waterfall, slide, and grotto area come complete with intricate details and additions that perfectly play into the project’s theme. An immense amount of creativity, talent, and skill is required to take ordinary materials like vinyl and concrete and turn them into the outstanding backyards that Curtis creates, but these details allow his creativity to shine in a different light. Curtis immerses himself completely in just one or two projects at a time, which allows him the opportunity to add those intricate details that take his extraordinary projects to the next level. Some of the details in the grotto area of this hybrid project include real ship portholes that open and close, as well as carvings and lanterns to add visual interest inside of the grotto. The project also includes a raised spillover spa and a sunshelf with a bubbling water feature. The sunshelf has steps leading into the main body of the pool, giving swimmers an easy entry point if they don’t feel the urge to jump off the top of the waterfall or take a ride down the hand-carved, hand-tiled slide. The shelf has just enough water to allow shallow wading or lounging, and the pebbled finish provides a perfect place to set a lounge chair without worrying about damaging the vinyl liner. With the spa nearby, this whole end of the pool is perfect for relaxing, talking, or watching the kids while they swim. This incredible hybrid swimming pool also includes a poolside pizza oven, so fresh, stone-fired pizza is never far away. The brick oven can cook a pizza in about 90 seconds, and produces authentic, outstanding pizzas. The homeowners have spent years perfecting their pizza crust and sauce recipes, as well as growing their own tomatoes and basil. The pizza oven adds another element of their own personality, and makes this project even more perfect for them. With a built-in countertop, it’s easy to get a couple of pies going at one time, or to prep ingredients for personal pizzas. The homeowners are very family-oriented and love to have friends and family over to their home. During the construction process, the Legendary Escapes crew met several friends and family members who stopped in for some quality time and to check out the progress of the pool. The finished product is a perfect place for entertaining, and it feels very comfortable and welcoming. With the sunshelf, spa, grotto, poolside seating, and the pool itself, there are plenty of different places to sit or soak and have conversations or splash around. Curtis is incredibly proud of this project, and he has high hopes for it. He was recently named a Master of Design by Pool & Spa News for a hybrid swimming pool he built in Brighton, MI. This new, nautical hybrid pool fits in beautifully with his portfolio, but also stands out as extraordinary. The team at Legendary Escapes anticipates positive feedback and recognition for this project, and looks forward to building more swimming pools that push the envelope and wow clients and fans.
