The new porch was insulated and incorporated into the overall space. The kitchen remodel was part of a whole house remodel so new quarter sawn oak flooring, a vaulted ceiling, windows and skylights were added. A large calcutta marble topped island takes center stage. It houses a 5’ galley workstation - a sink that provides a convenient spot for prepping, serving, entertaining and clean up. A 36” induction cooktop is located directly across from the island for easy access. Two appliance garages on either side of the cooktop house small appliances that are used on a daily basis. Honeycomb tile by Ann Sacks and open shelving along the cooktop wall add an interesting focal point to the room. Antique mirrored glass faces the storage unit housing dry goods and a beverage center. “I chose details for the space that had a bit of a mid-century vibe that would work well with what was originally a 1950s ranch. Along the way a previous owner added a 2nd floor making it more of a Cape Cod style home, a few eclectic details felt appropriate”, adds Klimala. The wall opposite the cooktop houses a full size fridge, freezer, double oven, coffee machine and microwave. “There is a lot of functionality going on along that wall”, adds Klimala. A small pull out countertop below the coffee machine provides a spot for hot items coming out of the ovens. The rooms creamy cabinetry is accented by quartersawn white oak at the island and wrapped ceiling beam. The golden tones are repeated in the antique brass light fixtures. “This is the second kitchen I’ve had the opportunity to design for myself. My taste has gotten a little less traditional over the years, and although I’m still a traditionalist at heart, I had some fun with this kitchen and took some chances. The kitchen is super functional, easy to keep clean and has lots of storage to tuck things away when I’m done using them. The casual dining room is fabulous and is proving to be a great spot to linger after dinner. In this Victorian home on Capitol Hill, the interior had been gut renovated by a developer to match a modern farmhouse aesthetic which did not reflect our client. Our scope included a complete overhaul of the primary bathroom and powder room, a heavy kitchen refresh, along with new hardware, doors, paint, lighting, furnishings and window treatments throughout the home. Our goal was to also elevate the home’s architectural details, including a new stair rail, back to what could have been original millwork while creating a feminine, sophisticated space for a family of 5 (plus one adorable furry friend).

The homeowners loved the location of their small Cape Cod home, but they didn't love its limited interior space. A 10' addition along the back of the home and a brand new 2nd story gave them just the space they needed. With a classy monotone exterior and a welcoming front porch, this remodel is a refined example of a transitional style home. Our clients have a busy life so they wanted their inner city garden to be low fuss and look low fuss. They wanted outdoor spaces that looked relaxed, with a simple and soft palette of finishes that acknowledged their coastal location. The site conditions and their brief also called for plants that were hardy and that would tolerate the full sun and sandy soils. The structural finishes and the plant colours provide a harmonious blend and compliment the design choices of the interior.

The conversion of this iconic American barn into a Writer’s Studio was conceived of as a tranquil retreat with natural light and lush views to stimulate inspiration for both husband and wife. Originally used as a garage with two horse stalls, the existing stick framed structure provided a loft with ideal space and orientation for a secluded studio. Signature barn features were maintained and enhanced such as horizontal siding, trim, large barn doors, cupola, roof overhangs, and framing. New features added to compliment the contextual significance and sustainability aspect of the project were reclaimed lumber from a razed barn used as flooring, driftwood retrieved from the shores of the Hudson River used for trim, and distressing / wearing new wood finishes creating an aged look. Along with the efforts for maintaining the historic character of the barn, modern elements were also incorporated into the design to provide a more current ensemble based on its new use. Elements such a light fixtures, window configurations, plumbing fixtures and appliances were all modernized to appropriately represent the present way of life.

Most MTI drop-in and freestanding baths can be equipped with our thoughtfully engineered air bath systems. Designer and Boutique Collection air baths feature air jets that are appropriately called "illusion” jets because they are barely visible and absolutely flush with the bottom of the bathing well. This design allows for optimized placement of the air jets for maximum performance and therapeutic effectiveness, without sacrificing bather comfort or compromising the aesthetic beauty of the bath. The Air Massage and Air Massage Elite systems caress the body with millions of relaxing air bubbles provided by a quiet blower with a ceramic heating element which pre-warms the air to body temperature. As the air bubbles rise from the bottom, they cling to the skin and open the pores, drawing the capillaries to the surface and thereby increasing blood circulation and detoxifying the bather.

Inspiration for a large timeless l-shaped dark wood floor enclosed kitchen remodel in Austin with a farmhouse sink, recessed-panel cabinets, granite countertops, multicolored backsplash, subway tile backsplash, stainless steel appliances and an island

The 3,400 SF, 3 – bedroom, 3 ½ bath main house feels larger than it is because we pulled the kids’ bedroom wing and master suite wing out from the public spaces and connected all three with a TV Den. Convenient ranch house features include a porte cochere at the side entrance to the mud room, a utility/sewing room near the kitchen, and covered porches that wrap two sides of the pool terrace. We designed a separate icehouse to showcase the owner’s unique collection of Texas memorabilia. The building includes a guest suite and a comfortable porch overlooking the pool. The main house and icehouse utilize reclaimed wood siding, brick, stone, tie, tin, and timbers alongside appropriate new materials to add a feeling of age.

While this new home had an architecturally striking exterior, the home’s interior fell short in terms of true functionality and overall style. The most critical element in this renovation was the kitchen and dining area, which needed careful attention to bring it to the level that suited the home and the homeowners. As a graduate of Culinary Institute of America, our client wanted a kitchen that “feels like a restaurant, with the warmth of a home kitchen,” where guests can gather over great food, great wine, and truly feel comfortable in the open concept home. Although it follows a typical chef’s galley layout, the unique design solutions and unusual materials set it apart from the typical kitchen design. Polished countertops, laminated and stainless cabinets fronts, and professional appliances are complemented by the introduction of wood, glass, and blackened metal – materials introduced in the overall design of the house. Unique features include a wall clad in walnut for dangling heavy pots and utensils; a floating, sculptural walnut countertop piece housing an herb garden; an open pantry that serves as a coffee bar and wine station; and a hanging chalkboard that hides a water heater closet and features different coffee offerings available to guests. The dining area addition, enclosed by windows, continues to vivify the organic elements and brings in ample natural light, enhancing the darker finishes and creating additional warmth. To gain more usable space in this narrow landscape and update the hardscaping and overgrown garden, my design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance. Here is a far shot of the beam screens and context photo for them. The various levels are more evident as you walk through the garden and pan through these garden photos. One difficult spot was keeping the back hot tub walls from getting too tall but being able to form a vault for the hot tub beneath the deck. I was excited about my design for the floating steps up from the hot tub, to serve as lounge bench seating with the back of the BBQ plinth acting as privacy as well as the back of the bench and steps. The planters add green and another seating perch and deal with the grading levels I mentioned in other photos.
