This first-period farmhouse dates to 1674. WKD’s experience in historic preservation and antique curation restored this gentleman’s farm into a casual, comfortable, livable home for the next chapter in this couple’s lives. The project included a new family entrance and mud room, new powder room, and opening up some of the rooms for better circulation. While WKD curated the client’s existing collection of art and antiques, refurbishing where necessary, new furnishings were also added to give the home a new lease on life. Working with older homes, and historic homes, is one of Wilson Kelsey Design’s specialties. This project was featured on the cover of Design New England's September/October 2013 issue. I wanted to add something meaningful for the family on their rec room in their finish basement area. I just bought basic frames and asked my client to collect a bunch of different pictures and newspaper articles to be highlighted as a surprise to her husband showing off his glory high school day among other sports related items. These wine cellars are both for show, one upstairs and the other downstairs. Complete with custom stainless steel doors and windows, these wine rooms provide great views from anywhere in the area. The owners of this former one-story ranch house had clipped a newspaper article featuring Morpurgo Architects’ receipt of the coveted State and County Historic Preservation Awards. As they read the article, they knew that they had found the firm with the expertise to turn their ranch into a Dutch Colonial two-story home with sweeping roof lines. It was their family’s opportunity to return to their roots that lie in the early history of the Dutch settlements in Bergen County. We designed renovations that reconfigured and expanded the first floor. The relocated entrance, centered on the new stone masonry front facade that replicates the rope grouting of the 1800’s, opens onto a vestibule that provides access to the new kitchen, dining, living, and family rooms. The new second floor roof sweeps and dormers add interior visual interest to the bedroom and bathroom. Our clients tell us that neighbors frequently stop by to admire their distinctive home, unique among the nearby ranch houses. They feel that they have the best of both worlds, living in a house that has the look of a historic home and includes authentic features such as wide plank floors, square-cut nails, bulls-eye glass, Dutch doors, strap hinges and latches, while enjoying all the modern amenities of today’s homes.

Inspiration for a 1950s living room remodel in Seattle

When big architecture comes to a small town, it’s bound to attract attention. This house, atop a hill in the northwest corner of Connecticut, is no exception. Some of the neighbors, bewildered by its flat, pale façade, have asked the owners, Norval and Camilla White, “When are the shutters arriving?” and “What color is going to be?” Others, entranced by its simplicity, have inquired, “What style is it?” The answers, respectively, are, “There won’t be any shutters”; “We’ve already stained it white”; and “Distilled vernacular.” That’s the phrase coined by the couple to describe their seductively spare structure. “It’s a typical New England building, taken down one level of detail,” explains Norval, who is the co-author of the classic AIA Guide to New York City (and therefore eminently qualified to name the style). Camilla explains that when it came to details such as moldings and overhangs, they didn’t eliminate them — something a minimalist might do – but kept them small and simple.
