Challenges with your backyard space? Yeah, that's no problem for us. In this space, the deck could not be attached to the house because of the way this turn-of-the-century home was built. The house is 100 years old and the basement door is right in the middle of the back of the house, preventing an attached deck. Another big challenge on this space was that the lot sloped up the hill and away from the house. So what did we do? We excavated and put in retaining walls and build it into the side of the hill, while maintaining integrity of the backyard space and driveway. The homeowners wanted their outdoor space on the same level as the play area with swingset so that they could watch the kids while they relax. Nailed it! This 5,000 square-foot project consisted of a new barn structure on a sloping waterfront property. The structure itself is tucked into the hillside to allow direct access to an upper level space by driveway. The forms and details of the barn are in keeping with the existing, century-old main residence, located down-slope, and adjacent to the water’s edge. The program included a lower-level three-bay garage, and an upper-level multi-use room both sporting polished concrete floors. Strong dedication to material quality and style provided the chance to introduce modern touches while maintaining the maturity of the site. Combining steel and timber framing brought the two styles together and offered the chance to utilize durable wood paneling on the interior and create an air-craft cable metal staircase linking the two levels. The Home The Knollwood’s exquisite exterior is inspired by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a prairie architectural style, containing elements to blend in with the natural surroundings. This custom floorplan was specifically designed with a unique arrangement to allow each room on the main level to experience a Pikes Peak view and abundant sunlight. A wall of sliding windows in the great room and lower recreation room showcases the panoramic view of the three-acre, treed property to blend indoor with outdoor living. The expansive covered deck offers a built-in grill, fire pit, hot tub deck and ample seating to experience the best of Colorado outdoor living. The Master retreat includes two fireplaces, a large soaking tub and a spacious, zero-entry glass shower. The closet features a custom shelving system, tall windows and a large bench for putting on shoes or placing suitcases for packing. It also offers direct access to the main-level laundry room. The heated garage offers generous space for four cars, plus additional space for storage or an excellent workshop. The Interior Design The vision for The Knollwood, by Alliance Builder’s Interior Designer Jennifer Van Dyke, was to bring the beauty of the natural surroundings indoors. Rich warm woods, organic elements and soft grays are complimented by vibrant pops of color and black in this Frank Lloyd Wright meets mountain contemporary style home. Drawing inspiration from the classic prairie-style exterior, the interior of the home creates the perfect setting to enjoy the breathtaking Pikes Peak view. The home features massive stone columns, custom wood beams and an exquisite oversized entry door. The home is enhanced with warm, wood cabinets and rich, live-sawn, oak flooring, which compliments the crisp gray wall color perfectly. Quartz waterfall accents, sleek modern light fixtures and custom tile details throughout create a luxurious feel. The beautifully designed spacious floor plan and expansive outdoor living area make this a great space for relaxing at home or entertaining!

A neutral colour palette was the main aspect of the brief setting the tone for a sophisticated and elegant home. For the floor we chose Quickstep Majestic - Desert Oak Brushed Grey. The neutral tone will be a subtle backdrop to the furnishings tying everything together. The features of the floor like scratch-resistant, important for the dog and waterproof surface for use in kitchen and laundry. Moreover, Quick-Step laminate floors have received the EU Ecolabel, which means that they are made from at least 80% sustainably sourced wood, avoid hazardous substances in their composition, and are produced in power efficient factories. In addition Quick-Step laminate floors have a very long lifetime, an extended product guarantee, are easy to repair and easy to remove. Curtains and sheers play a significant role in enhancing the overall aesthetics of a room. They add color, pattern, texture, and visual interest to complement the existing décor. The curtains are essential in providing the finishing touch to the overall look and feel of this Dining Room.

The carpet was chosen, as it can be used of stairs as well, which ensured continuity between the lower and upper floor. It is as soft as velvet underfoot, perfect for their young son to sit on the floor and play.

This private residence involved construction of a modern architectural style estate property in Highland Park, Texas. Dee Brown Inc’s role came into play late in the project, when corrections were needed to some specialty stonework. The home’s center is formed around the main entry. The floorplan is largely open, but parallel core wall areas serve to define the foyer, kitchen, dining, and living areas. As key areas, the architect put special focus on materials selection for the core walls. It was decided that Indiana limestone would be the finish, and that the cladding panels would all have unique continuous horizontal grooves. Material was received and installed by the original subcontractor. Upon seeing the completed work, it was evident to the architect and owner that grooves in the fabricated material were not consistent, and that the installation process had left numerous chips to the panels. It was at this point that the partially completed work was removed, and the second fabricator/installer was contacted. Dee Brown Inc ordered the Indiana limestones slabs. There, special care was taken to hold tight tolerances to the horizontal grooves as well as to the typical cut-to-size aspects. Erection of these mechanically set panels was done very carefully. The result was a clean finished product with none of the tolerance and chipping issues of the original installation. Dee Brown, Inc also created and installed special stone finishes at the adjacent half-bath. Semi-precious white onyx was transformed into a lavatory top/bowl assembly, water-closet wall cladding, and even tissue and towel holders.

For Project Jack and Jill, we focused on layering textures with warm neutral tones. We designed bespoke furniture, like the custom farmhouse style table, with carefully thought out details, creating heirloom pieces. We paired these bespoke pieces with curated found objects, like the antique pine dressers from Hungry, the Vine Sculpture from Thailand, and the hand woven African Baskets. Playing with scale was an important aspect of this project, which is enhanced through the use of the large Linear Darlana Lantern from Visual Comfort over the dining table. Lighting systems in poultry farms play a critical role in ensuring optimal growth, health, and productivity of poultry. Proper lighting management affects chickens’ behavior, reproduction, and overall performance, making it a fundamental aspect of modern poultry farming.

As Sheila Gibson Stoodley writes in an article about this project in Robb Report, “Brian Hemingway is sensitive to light in the best way possible.” “The Vancouver, British Columbia-based architect wanted this 22,000-square-foot home near Boston to glow like a lantern at night, and he attained that goal on behalf of the homeowners.” The wood and stone that Hemingway favored for the home informed the space’s color palette. So critical were these materials that settling on a shade of stain for the Douglas fir and the finishes to be used on the Virginia Mist granite took months of consultation. Walker Zanger, the stone supplier, worked with the owner and with Colin Flavin, a Boston-based architect who partnered with Hemingway, to choose, detail, and fabricate the granite. The stone is used indoors and out, heightening the boundary-blurring effect that the design team desired. Though the owners are ardent art collectors, they did not build their home to showcase specific works; the real artists here are the architects, Hemingway and Flavin. So deft were they at inviting nature into their creation that, from certain angles, it can be hard to tell where the outdoors stops and starts. “There are deliberately no window treatments so that Mother Nature weaves the most beautiful textural backgrounds,” said interior designer Andrew Sheinman, of New York’s Pembrooke & Ives. He oversaw the interiors, working alongside his colleague Michael Lewis. “The seasons change the look and aspect of the house,” said Sheinman, “and we wanted to play on this.” Bleu de Savoie marble, from France, is used in the baths, to contrast with the Virginia Mist granite and soften the palette and give the baths a spa-like serenity. Hand-chiseled Oxford Black granite is used on exterior landscape walls, to tie the Virginia Mist seamlessly to the natural stone outcroppings.

When a client tells us they’re a mid-century collector and long for a kitchen design unlike any other we are only too happy to oblige. This kitchen is saturated in mid-century charm and its custom features make it difficult to pin-point our favorite aspect! Cabinetry We had the pleasure of partnering with one of our favorite Denver cabinet shops to make our walnut dreams come true! We were able to include a multitude of custom features in this kitchen including frosted glass doors in the island, open cubbies, a hidden cutting board, and great interior cabinet storage. But what really catapults these kitchen cabinets to the next level is the eye-popping angled wall cabinets with sliding doors, a true throwback to the magic of the mid-century kitchen. Streamline brushed brass cabinetry pulls provided the perfect lux accent against the handsome walnut finish of the slab cabinetry doors. Tile Amidst all the warm clean lines of this mid-century kitchen we wanted to add a splash of color and pattern, and a funky backsplash tile did the trick! We utilized a handmade yellow picket tile with a high variation to give us a bit of depth; and incorporated randomly placed white accent tiles for added interest and to compliment the white sliding doors of the angled cabinets, helping to bring all the materials together. Counter We utilized a quartz along the counter tops that merged lighter tones with the warm tones of the cabinetry. The custom integrated drain board (in a starburst pattern of course) means they won’t have to clutter their island with a large drying rack. As an added bonus, the cooktop is recessed into the counter, to create an installation flush with the counter surface. Stair Rail Not wanting to miss an opportunity to add a touch of geometric fun to this home, we designed a custom steel handrail. The zig-zag design plays well with the angles of the picket tiles and the black finish ties in beautifully with the black metal accents in the kitchen. Lighting We removed the original florescent light box from this kitchen and replaced it with clean recessed lights with accents of recessed undercabinet lighting and a terrifically vintage fixture over the island that pulls together the black and brushed brass metal finishes throughout the space. This kitchen has transformed into a strikingly unique space creating the perfect home for our client’s mid-century treasures.

Bold color choices and skylights brighten up this kitchen space. One playful aspect of this design includes the rubber-type light fixtures over the island, creating a contemporary feel. Warm-earthy tones compliment the blunt-orange pantry color. The over-sized island features walnut butcher block countertops that contrast the quartz countertops to the side. Also included in this project are stainless steel appliances and a textured tile backsplash.
