Crofton, MD The client wanted a small opening from the kitchen to a dark unused family room in attempt to make the space more desirable. I wanted to see the family room brighter, warmer and at the same time be part of the hub for entertaining. We removed half of the wall between the kitchen and family room. This then gave me the opportunity to create a peninsula counter with seating for gathering. By removing the wall between the 2 rooms the traffic flow was improved and more natural light was allowed to flood into the rooms from a pair of sliding glass doors. Contractor, Artech Construction.

Noting the debris in the foreground, imagine what this place looked like prior to the landscape renovation. The challenge was to bring dignity and calm to such an eclectic mess of funky structures and exposed utilities. How to unify aged chocolate metal siding, sterile, glaring white aluminum siding and a beautiful old wooden shed? This gate is the first hint of the leitmotif that attempts to do just that. Conceived and fabricated by artist Jes Sanderford, his materials are a byproduct of the solar industry in which he works and collected on his backcountry mountain forays exploring old mines and camps. When used to clean natural stone, supermarket products can often cause more harm than good as this recent customer of mine discovered this the hard way! Originally from South Africa, she had lived in a flat in Clapham for a couple of years, but had to suddenly return home earlier than expected. However, part of her flat rental agreement required her to leave the property clean and as she found it, including the fantastic Slate shower cubicle. In a rush, the customer had attempted to clean the Slate using a popular supermarket bathroom cleaner. She left the product to sit on the base of the shower before scrubbing it in with an abrasive pan scourer. This was a big mistake – and the customer called me in a panic after discovering that her attempts had left the Slate severely stained. I traveled to the property to see what could be done to set the situation straight. Upon observing the damage in person, I decided that the best course of action would be to use a process known as burnishing to grind away the stains. I tested a small area of the cubicle with one of our handheld diamond encrusted burnishing blocks. Happy with the results of the test Clean, I started to burnish the whole cubicle using our system of four burnishing blocks, starting with the coarsest first and working my way down to the finest. A small amount of water was used as lubrication for each pad. Through the burnishing process, the white stains started to disappear, exposing the lighter grey coloured Slate shower base. After drying the area completely with a heat gun, I was able to seal the stone with two coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow. This impregnating sealer not only protects the stone but also importantly it restores the natural dark shades in the Slate, enhancing its overall appearance. As an impregnating sealer, Colour Grow penetrates the pores in the stone to fill them and prevent trapped dirt. To say the customer was very relieved would be a complete understatement! By hiring in professional assistance, the customer was able to resolve the situation quickly and painlessly – and more importantly hold onto her £3,000 deposit! Rupert Mcleod West Surrey Tile Doctor

This delightful couple purchased this home with renovation in mind. It was situated in an ideal location, but required a serious update bringing modernization while keeping it’s 1940’s period charm. They asked us to design an elegant Master Suite, complete with a bedroom, master closet and elegant bathroom. While we make every attempt to maintain original walls and floors, this renovation required complete gutting of two bedrooms and closets to open the space and allow for all they wanted. In this process we were able to bring uneven floors and walls into level allowing for great end results. The finishing touches on this bathroom included custom white painted vanity and make-up table with White Carrara Marble countertops and a custom tile floor design using Carrara Marble tile. A free-standing tub and bridge faucets/ tub spout upped the game on a modern take on an old-world plumbing fixture. The glass shower completes this sophisticated space, which gives this master bath a modern twist on traditional. We then turned our attention to the master bedroom, touching it up with new paint and refinishing with a new master closet separating the bedroom from the bathroom.
