Erik Grammer Photography - I recently came across a post on Facebook with a photo of an elderly couple with a quote saying "We were born in a time when if something was broken we would fix it, not throw it away..." This quote resonated with me. I found myself thinking of it while working on the same house - for the fourth time. I affectionately call this beautiful Southern California beach house the Humpty Dumpty home. I started a wonderful business relationship with one of my favorite clients back in 2003. Initially, I was called in to "fix" and finish what another designer started. Once completed and with everything just so, the couple unfortunately divorced and amicably divided the art, rugs and furnishings. I was hired for a second time to recreate each room as close as possible to replace all items that were missing. The house was happily restored back to the original design and all was well for a few years. My client relocated to the East Coast for a temporary job assignment and the house was rented to a person (whose name I can't say) from a famous all-girl band. During this time there was a problem with the upstairs laundry room and water damage occurred. I was hired for the third time to help repair and update (ever so slightly) some areas in the house. My client requested to keep the design and feeling of the house intact because he loved it so much. A few years passed before a pipe broke in the master bathroom while the new renter was out of town on vacation. Unfortunately, things like this do happen - and if not attended to quickly, major damage can occur. In this case, nearly the entire house was flooded requiring it to be completely gutted and stripped down to the floorboards and studs. In January of this year, I was hired to help the client, the insurance company, and the contractor put the house back together again. But unlike the Humpty Dumpty story, this house has actually been put back together again - several times over. Although, this house and client have experienced some challenges, I say this is a perfect example of design success. My client has had many opportunities to change and create something new in his environment with every mis-adventure. Instead, he realizes his home is exactly the way he likes it. It has been such an honor to work with this man who is definitive, trusting, and confident enough to create (or re-create) the perfect home that "fits" his personality and lifestyle. Although this Humpty Dumpty home has been good for my business, I hope the next project with this client is to decorate another property - perhaps a New York City Apartment!

Who would mind doing dishes with this view? This kitchen is elegant, functional and beautiful. First notice the cabinetry. This is a soft grey on the perimeter with a deep walnut island. The walnut has an amazing shea matte finish that is so yummy you can't stop touching it. Every detail has been attended to with a small bump out for the sink and range. Oh there is more, the toe kick is chrome for that beautiful reflection of the floor. The pantries, appliance garage, the wine cooler, glass buffet and of course this amazing hood. This homeowner loved her home and location, but it needed updating and a more efficient use of the condensed space she had for her kitchen. We were creative in opening the kitchen and a small eat-in area to create a more open kitchen for multiple cooks to work together. We created a coffee station/serving area with floating shelves, and in order to preserve the existing windows, we stepped a base cabinet down to maintain adequate counter prep space. With custom cabinetry reminiscent of the era of this home and a glass tile back splash she loved, we were able to give her the kitchen of her dreams in a home she already loved. We attended a holiday cookie party at her home upon completion, and were able to experience firsthand, multiple cooks in the kitchen and hear the oohs and ahhs from family and friends about the amazing transformation of her spaces.

NARI CAPITAL COTY, HONORABLE MENTION AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL KITCHEN $50,000 TO $100,000 The owners of this Mount Vernon home purchased it with plans to remodel the kitchen. The original space was tired, dark and disorganized. A peninsula separated the kitchen from the breakfast area and the adjacent sunroom was only accessed via a single door. The back pantry was poorly designed and there was no logic to the kitchen’s work space. The first step in this stunning transformation involved replacing the original peninsula with a large central island. Built using espresso stained furniture-quality cabinets with icon legs, open bottoms and exotic dark granite countertops, all kitchen traffic now flows around the island. The outside wall of the kitchen, featuring a 48” Thermador range, stainless steel range hood and glass tile backsplash, is the focal point of the new space. A stainless steel farm-style sink sits beneath one of two large windows that provide lots of natural light into the room. To the right, sits a 48” Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer. The wall adjacent to the family room was never used properly. Now it is home to two tall pantries, double ovens and a microwave. Creative pass through arches let the homeowner attend to guests while preparing food in the kitchen. The butler area adjacent to the dining room is filled with glass front cabinetry and additional cabinetry for extra storage. The kitchen is now part of an open concept design flowing from kitchen to dining room to sun room. By replacing a bearing wall with a structural header, traffic can flow from one room to the next making it brighter and more conducive to entertaining. More spacious than ever, this new kitchen is the hub of the home for this couple who love to cook and entertain.

A corner glass enclosed wine room and bar is the first thing you see when entering this home. The enclosure has an opening between the counter and glass holder that allows the owner to serve and attend to his guests from inside. You have a drawer for accessories, and a lighted cigar humidor. My marching orders for the design of the chairs was to make them contemporary in design while at the same time honoring the existing Richardsonian pews and to make them upright enough that attendants would not fall asleep during Dean Gregg’s sermons.

This is a larger version of our standard Cedar Brooke Model. This Cedar Brooke 2.0 was a unveiled at the Great Big Home and Garden Show in Cleveland, Ohio. This spacious rustic modern home is full of space inside and out for the family to enjoy. You can also take a virtual tour on our website! Check out all the rooms and other parts of our display from the show. The combination of large timbers, stone and metal compliments each other beautifully. This home was a huge hit with all of the attendants at the show. On the side this home also featured an attached pavilion/patio area perfect for summer nights with guests. Inside you will find beautiful high ceilings, stone and Timber detailing; as well as an amazing fireplace. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare the perfect meal. The stone detailing in the kitchen is eye catching. This particular home featured three bedrooms, two baths, large dining and living area, a large beautiful kitchen, laundry room, upstairs loft living area. Out side was a beautiful front porch and an amazing side patio area with timber style pavilion. Our Amish Country builders are second to none and have years of experience in building homes, garages, barns, sheds, pavilions and much more. The stone was provided by our sister company Gran'ide Stone Works. The furnishings were provided by our other sister company Weaver's Fine Furniture of Sugarcreek, Ohio.

Coming from design background, for me utility (read convenience, freedom of usage, pain points) are a bit more important than the aesthetics part. With each design, I try to improve a bit on 'non-beauty' part too, and now that I am creating things from scratch and have choice to work from ground up, I use every opportunity to make your product experience better, even if it means attending to a pain point (in this case freedom of choice after buying). This bathroom was created for a young family. The bi-fold screen can fold completely flat against the end of the bath without snagging on the fixed shower head. This approach allows full access to the bath when kneeling next to the bath attending to small children with easy access to the bath/shower valve and the hand shower. The recessed shelves provide plenty of room for toys and bottles. Also works very well when mum just wants a nice soak!
