The design challenge was to enhance the square footage, flow and livability in this 1,442 sf 1930’s Tudor style brick house for a growing family of four. A two story 1,000 sf addition was the solution proposed by the design team at Advance Design Studio, Ltd. The new addition provided enough space to add a new kitchen and eating area with a butler pantry, a food pantry, a powder room and a mud room on the lower level, and a new master suite on the upper level. The family envisioned a bright and airy white classically styled kitchen accented with espresso in keeping with the 1930’s style architecture of the home. Subway tile and timely glass accents add to the classic charm of the crisp white craftsman style cabinetry and sparkling chrome accents. Clean lines in the white farmhouse sink and the handsome bridge faucet in polished nickel make a vintage statement. River white granite on the generous new island makes for a fantastic gathering place for family and friends and gives ample casual seating. Dark stained oak floors extend to the new butler’s pantry and powder room, and throughout the first floor making a cohesive statement throughout. Classic arched doorways were added to showcase the home’s period details. On the upper level, the newly expanded garage space nestles below an expansive new master suite complete with a spectacular bath retreat and closet space and an impressively vaulted ceiling. The soothing master getaway is bathed in soft gray tones with painted cabinets and amazing “fantasy” granite that reminds one of beach vacations. The floor mimics a wood feel underfoot with a gray textured porcelain tile and the spacious glass shower boasts delicate glass accents and a basket weave tile floor. Sparkling fixtures rest like fine jewelry completing the space. The vaulted ceiling throughout the master suite lends to the spacious feel as does the archway leading to the expansive master closet. What was once an unfinished, bare, cluttered, cold laundry and mud room was converted into an organized, attractive, functional and adaptive space. A bamboo laundry folding or craft table has hinged legs that fold under the table allowing the table to hinge down flat against the wall vastly opening the space for everyday use. Fold down laundry drying racks above the table will also lay flat against the wall. Bead board walls hide large storage closets. Bead board doors blend in and when opened LED light strips illuminate large sport gear bag shelving, closet rods for out of season jackets. Other closets also hide an electrical panel, water heater, water softener and provide rough storage of softener salt, house paints and other unsightly but needed items. The built in washer and dryer are conveniently raised with laundry basket storage underneath and laundry supply cabinets above. A built in mud room cubbie and bench are in the back right. An efficient electric panel heater hangs on the wall to the left. To the left of the W/D and out of view is a built in dog wash that doubles as a utility sink as well as an additional closet for ironing board and supplies. The flooring is a 3/4" thick rubber mat tile with a raised dimple pattern designed for athletic rooms that is durable yet soft and warm to walk on even with bare feet.

Garage - small contemporary garage idea in New York

This custom barn door was created to hang off of the Stainless Steel Flat Track Kit. The homeowner had this to say about her new doors and hardware, "We wanted the entry to the den/guest room to be eye-catching, functional, and literally a piece of ART. An entry area to the home, this family laundry room became a catch-all for coats, bags and shoes. It also served as the laundry hub with a collection of portable drying racks, storage shelves and furniture that did not optimize the available space and layout. The Gable Shed is a no frills storage building, strong enough to handle harsh New England weather and every day use. A beefy heavy duty shed with hefty 2×6 full- dimensioned hemlock floor and roof framing, this building features attractive trim details and a generous roof over-hang that offers better protection from the elements. This main floor bathroom had to function not only as a Powder Room for guests but also be easily accessible to the backyard pool for the family to change and wash up. Combining the weathered wood vanity and shower wall tiles with the crisp shell-inspired mirror and sand-like floor tile we’ve achieved a space reminiscent of the beach just down the road.
