Balance Accessibility - Photos & Ideas

Once a sunken living room closed off from the kitchen, we aimed to change the awkward accessibility of the space into an open and easily functional space that is cohesive. To open up the space even further, we designed a blackened steel structure with mirrorpane glass to reflect light and enlarge the room. Within the structure lives a previously existing lava rock wall. We painted this wall in glitter gold and enhanced the gold luster with built-in backlit LEDs. Centered within the steel framing is a TV, which has the ability to be hidden when the mirrorpane doors are closed. The adjacent staircase wall is cladded with a large format white casework grid and seamlessly houses the wine refrigerator. The clean lines create a simplistic ornate design as a fresh backdrop for the repurposed crystal chandelier. Nothing short of bold sophistication, this kitchen overflows with playful elegance — from the gold accents to the glistening crystal chandelier above the island. We took advantage of the large window above the 7’ galley workstation to bring in a great deal of natural light and a beautiful view of the backyard. In a kitchen full of light and symmetrical elements, on the end of the island we incorporated an asymmetrical focal point finished in a dark slate. This four drawer piece is wrapped in safari brasilica wood that purposefully carries the warmth of the floor up and around the end piece to ground the space further. The wow factor of this kitchen is the geometric glossy gold tiles of the hood creating a glamourous accent against a marble backsplash above the cooktop. This kitchen is not only classically striking but also highly functional. The versatile wall, opposite of the galley sink, includes an integrated refrigerator, freezer, steam oven, convection oven, two appliance garages, and tall cabinetry for pantry items. The kitchen’s layout of appliances creates a fluid circular flow in the kitchen. Across from the kitchen stands a slate gray wine hutch incorporated into the wall. The doors and drawers have a gilded diamond mesh in the center panels. This mesh ties in the golden accents around the kitchens décor and allows you to have a peek inside the hutch when the interior lights are on for a soft glow creating a beautiful transition into the living room. Between the warm tones of light flooring and the light whites and blues of the cabinetry, the kitchen is well-balanced with a bright and airy atmosphere. The powder room for this home is gilded with glamor. The rich tones of the walnut wood vanity come forth midst the cool hues of the marble countertops and backdrops. Keeping the walls light, the ornate framed mirror pops within the space. We brought this mirror into the place from another room within the home to balance the window alongside it. The star of this powder room is the repurposed golden swan faucet extending from the marble countertop. We places a facet patterned glass vessel to create a transparent complement adjacent to the gold swan faucet. In front of the window hangs an asymmetrical pendant light with a sculptural glass form that does not compete with the mirror.

This beautiful, three-story, updated shingle-style cottage is perched atop a bluff on the shores of Lake Michigan, and was designed to make the most of its towering vistas. The proportions of the home are made even more pleasing by the combination of stone, shingles and metal roofing. Deep balconies and wrap-around porches emphasize outdoor living, white tapered columns, an arched dormer, and stone porticos give the cottage nautical quaintness, tastefully balancing the grandeur of the design. The interior space is dominated by vast panoramas of the water below. High ceilings are found throughout, giving the home an airy ambiance, while enabling large windows to display the natural beauty of the lakeshore. The open floor plan allows living areas to act as one sizeable space, convenient for entertaining. The diagonally situated kitchen is adjacent to a sunroom, dining area and sitting room. Dining and lounging areas can be found on the spacious deck, along with an outdoor fireplace. The main floor master suite includes a sitting area, vaulted ceiling, a private bath, balcony access, and a walk-through closet with a back entrance to the home’s laundry. A private study area at the front of the house is lined with built-in bookshelves and entertainment cabinets, creating a small haven for homeowners. The upper level boasts four guest or children’s bedrooms, two with their own private bathrooms. Also upstairs is a built-in office space, loft sitting area, ample storage space, and access to a third floor deck. The walkout lower level was designed for entertainment. Billiards, a bar, sitting areas, screened-in and covered porches make large groups easy to handle. Master Bathroom Remodel with Linear Drain - CairnsCraft Design & Remodel

Our client requested a design that reflected their need to renovate their dated bathroom into a transitional floor plan that would provide accessibility and function. The new shower design consists of a pony wall with a glass enclosure that has beautiful details of brushed nickel square glass clamps. The interior shower fittings entail geometric lines that lend a contemporary finish. A curbless shower and linear drain added an extra dimension of accessibility to the plan. In addition, a balance bar above the accessory niche was affixed to the wall for extra stability. The shower area also includes a folding teak wood bench seat that also adds to the comfort of the bathroom as well as to the accessibility factors. Improved lighting was created with LED Damp-location rated recessed lighting. LED sconces were also used to flank the Robern medicine cabinet which created realistic and flattering light. This custom built home was designed for a couple who were nearly retirement and caring for an elderly parent who required the use of a wheel chair. All of the spaces were designed with handicap accessibility, universal design, living-in-place and aging-in-place concepts in mind. The kitchen has both standing and seated prep areas, recessed knee space at the cooktop and bathroom sinks, raised washer and dryer, ergonomically placed appliances, wall oven, hidden microwave, wide openings and doors, easy maneuvering space and a perfect blend of private and public areas. The Transitional design style blends modern and traditional elements in a balanced and pleasing way. An abundance of natural light supported by well designed artificial light sources keeps the home safe, pleasant and inviting.

Opposite the windows, a beautiful masonry fireplace chase extends upward, surrounded by custom built-ins that create a stunning focal point for the room. Looking above, the eye is immediately drawn to the intricate tray ceiling detail, a signature design feature that Buffum Homes loves incorporating to add character, dimension, and visual impact. Just off the entryway, the home features both a private office and a versatile flex room complete with beautiful built-in cabinetry. The flex room offers endless possibilities and can easily function as an additional bedroom, playroom, music room, hobby space, or whatever best suits a family’s lifestyle. Flowing seamlessly from the great room is a spacious dining area and an expansive custom kitchen designed for both everyday living and entertaining. The kitchen is complemented by a large walk-in pantry, providing ample storage and functionality while maintaining the home’s clean and elegant aesthetic. Natural daylight pours throughout the entire main floor, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in every space. Every square foot was intentionally designed to maximize functionality, comfort, and beauty while creating a home uniquely tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle. Not only was this a beautiful home situated on a stunning site, but it was also a beautiful project that truly showcased the endless customization possibilities available with Buffum Homes. From the thoughtfully designed floor plan to the carefully selected finishes and statement features throughout, every detail reflected the homeowners’ vision and personality. We were honored to feature this home in the HBA Spring Parade of Homes and share it with the thousands of visitors who toured it throughout the event.
