In the dining room, we combined a rustic wood wall and table with comfy cream parsons chairs illuminated with crystal sconces and a beautiful vintage-look chandelier. New curved wainscoting accents the stairwell and 18-foot curtains highlight the dramatic entry with its metallic accented ceiling.

DOWNLOAD NOW   Storage was extremely important for this project because she wanted to go from keeping everything out in the open to have everything tucked away neatly, and who wouldn’t want this? So we went to work figuring out how to hide as much as possible but still keep things easy to access. The solution was two pullouts on either side of each vanity and a flush mount medicine cabinet above, so plenty of storage for each person. We kept the layout pretty much the same, but just changed up the configuration of the cabinets. We added a storage cabinet by the toilet because there was plenty of room for that and converted the tub to a shower to make it easy to use the space long-term. Modern day conveniences were also installed, including a heated towel bar, a lower threshold cast iron shower pan with sliding barn door shower door and a flip down shower seat. The house is a classic 1950’s midcentury ranch so we chose materials that fit that bill, and that had a bit of a Scandinavian vibe, including light maple Shaker door cabinets, black hardware and lighting, and simple subway tile in the shower. Our client fell in love with the white Macauba quartzite countertops in our showroom, and we agree they bring a perfect earthy energy into her space. Their existing backyard had served its purpose for many years when their children were young. Now their children in college, it was underused and in desperate need of an update. Having lived in their home for 19 years, my clients communicated clearly with goals to take advantage of the reason they moved to Palo Alto in the first place. Both desire spending more time for themselves enjoying our year round climate in Northern California. By initially addressing the specific request to decrease the water usage and the accompanying utility bills, objective for addition of a fire pit to the existing spa destination; both sharing their spaces for also a new destination of the turf for the husband, and avid golfer. When Irvine designer, Richard Bustos’ client decided to remodel his Orange County 4,900 square foot home into a contemporary space, he immediately thought of Cantoni. His main concern though was based on the assumption that our luxurious modern furnishings came with an equally luxurious price tag. It was only after a visit to our Irvine store, where the client and Richard connected that the client realized our extensive collection of furniture and accessories was well within his reach.

“Richard was very thorough and straight forward as far as pricing,” says the client. "I became very intrigued that he was able to offer high quality products that I was looking for within my budget.” The next phases of the project involved looking over floor plans and discussing the client’s vision as far as design. The goal was to create a comfortable, yet stylish and modern layout for the client, his wife, and their three kids. In addition to creating a cozy and contemporary space, the client wanted his home to exude a tranquil atmosphere. Drawing most of his inspiration from Houzz, (the leading online platform for home remodeling and design) the client incorporated a Zen-like ambiance through the distressed greyish brown flooring, organic bamboo wall art, and with Richard’s help, earthy wall coverings, found in both the master bedroom and bathroom. Over the span of approximately two years, Richard helped his client accomplish his vision by selecting pieces of modern furniture that possessed the right colors, earthy tones, and textures so as to complement the home’s pre-existing features. The first room the duo tackled was the great room, and later continued furnishing the kitchen and master bedroom. Living up to its billing, the great room not only opened up to a breathtaking view of the Newport coast, it also was one great space. Richard decided that the best option to maximize the space would be to break the room into two separate yet distinct areas for living and dining. While exploring our online collections, the client discovered the Jasper Shag rug in a bold and vibrant green. The grassy green rug paired with the sleek Italian made Montecarlo glass dining table added just the right amount of color and texture to compliment the natural beauty of the bamboo sculpture. The client happily adds, “I’m always receiving complements on the green rug!” Once the duo had completed the dining area, they worked on furnishing the living area, and later added pieces like the classic Renoir bed to the master bedroom and Crescent Console to the kitchen, which adds both balance and sophistication. The living room, also known as the family room was the central area where Richard’s client and his family would spend quality time. As a fellow family man, Richard understood that that meant creating an inviting space with comfortable and durable pieces of furniture that still possessed a modern flare. The client loved the look and design of the Mercer sectional. With Cantoni’s ability to customize furniture, Richard was able to special order the sectional in a fabric that was both durable and aesthetically pleasing. Selecting the color scheme for the living room was also greatly influenced by the client’s pre-existing artwork as well as unique distressed floors. Richard recommended adding dark pieces of furniture as seen in the Mercer sectional along with the Viera area rug. He explains, “The darker colors and contrast of the rug’s material worked really well with the distressed wood floor.” Furthermore, the comfortable American Leather Recliner, which was customized in red leather not only maximized the space, but also tied in the client’s picturesque artwork beautifully. The client adds gratefully, “Richard was extremely helpful with color; He was great at seeing if I was taking it too far or not enough.” It is apparent that Richard and his client made a great team. Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States We helped the clients find a beautiful lot in North Boulder, then crafted this modern 3,300 s.f. house to be their dream home. The clients asked for a warm modern style home, with an open floor plan that connected to the outdoors and took full advantage of the rare lot. We sited and engineered the house for optimal passive solar design, while simultaneously capturing unobstructed panoramic views of the Flatirons from both levels. The home’s simple, clean lines reflect their unpretentious, easy-going character. The gourmet kitchen, dining and Great room are flooded with sunshine from the 9ft high ceilings and walls of glass. A gracious covered west porch flows seamlessly out from the Great room through a giant bank of sliding doors, creating a fantastic opportunity for indoor/outdoor living. The porch has solid cedar columns and Beetle-kill wood on the ceiling to create a warm feeling. On the ground floor, walk past the front hall to reach a guest suite and a rec room that is divided between a small media room for the boys and a north facing painting studio. Follow the stair to the second floor where you’ll immediately be presented with a stunning view from the open study and balcony. All the bedrooms get a south facing Flatiron view and the master has its own private balcony. The owners wanted the HERS 37 house to be as green as possible, and the house has tiny energy and water bills as well as a healthy indoor air environment. It features solar photovoltaic panels, Energy Star fiberglass windows, foam insulation, LED lights, Watersense plumbing fixtures, a 96% efficient furnace & zero-VOC finishes. The 2023 Southern Living Idea House is an oasis on the Tennessee hillside. Bill Holloway and Luke Sippel of Lake + Land Studio had the task of building and designing the perfect home for clients who loved dogs, music, and indoor-outdoor living. The 5,600-square-foot contemporary Southern farmhouse in Leiper’s Fork was intentionally placed to fit the surrounding natural landscape. Holloway and Sippel wanted the home to feel as though it had always been there. An important element of Southern living was present in the home’s design and build: porches. The home has a large, covered porch that runs the nearly the entire length of the back of the home on the main floor and one on the lower level. Using Marvin Ultimate multi-slide doors on the porch unified the indoor and outdoor spaces. The multi-slide door has the ability for the door to open fully, seamlessly blending the two spaces. This is a new build that I helped a long-time client in renting out. Built with efficiency and style in mind. Easy connections to Route 2, I-95 and the train, this easily blends the in-town feel of Lexington, solitude of a lovely suburban neighborhood & great access to the city. This modern masterpiece is beautiful AND it conforms to the latest European passive house building standards. German-designed windows w/the highest levels of thermal efficiency seal out the elements & bathe the interior spaces with natural light. A 3-story staircase w/glass windows gives stunning views of conservation land and is the centerpiece of the house. Radiant heat provides pleasant warmth all winter while green roofing and solar panels insulate and power the home—all contained within a passive-level thermal envelope, ventilated by the latest Zehnder air-exchange technology providing the very best in indoor air quality. The kitchen’s outfitted with top notch appliances: Miele dishwasher, Sub-Zero fridge, Sub-Zero wine fridge, Wolf induction cooktop plus oven.

Out with the Old and in with the New In the first three pictures you will see the old kitchen. Old cabinets, old appliances, old sink, old wallpaper, old floor. You get the picture. It’s old. So, an update is in order. First, the clients chose to have their “still good cabinets” to be refaced. They chose a creamy white and the doors and drawers were replaced. If you aren’t familiar with refacing, the other wood on the cabinet is covered with a thin veneer making the entire cabinet look new. Countertops – Not wanting granite with its swirls and shiny surface, the clients opted for quartz. At the time of this renovation, quartz was a rather new concept. The quartz pattern is Sonora Gold which is in the textured category of Silestone. They wanted a warm inviting kitchen and the tan/orange undertone fit the bill. Next, Sink – Of course, as almost everyone who renovates their kitchen, they wanted an undermount sink. They chose a double granite undermount sink with an oil rubbed faucet set to go along with the drawer pulls and black trim in the kitchen. After that, flooring was installed. This is a vinyl that looks like stone. Not wanting the cold feel of stone and the hardness on the ol’ knees, this was a good choice. The vinyl picked up the colors of the countertops and paint along with a few flecks of black. Good choice! A custom made island was installed. This has a black base and the quartz countertop. When this was made, the installer said no, an island will not fit in this kitchen. You need the cabinets to open with 3’ clearance. I measured and put down paper in the shape of the island to simulate where the island would be. It fit nicely and as you can see, added not only storage but another surface on which to work. Appliances were added and the client wanted top of the line so GE Profile with its good reviews and quality, were installed. We went with white to contrast the white cabinets but overall give the kitchen a brighter feel. The paint chosen is Sienna Sand on top which blended well with the countertops as both have orange undertones and played nicely together. The bottom half of the oak chair rail was painted Pencil Point black to go with the island and faucets and drawer pulls. The finished look is an unexpected kitchen with warmth and comfort along with plenty of storage and working areas. The clients were very happy with the finished project.
