Beechwood sits on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Oxfordshire. Employing high-quality materials, simple detailing and robust forms, the design produced a contemporary and sustainable home appropriate to its context. The materials used in the project push conventional design boundaries but sit together harmoniously in the woodland setting. Blue/black engineering brickwork combine with pre-weathered Corten steel cladding, enabling the house to bleed into the landscape. Implementing energy saving solutions was integral to the success of this project and was a key part of the client brief. The design followed best practice in nine categories of sustainable design: energy and CO2 emissions, water, materials, surface water run-off, waste, pollution, health and wellbeing, management and ecology. Beechwood achieved a Level 4 certificate under The Code for Sustainable Homes.

And how is this captured in a shared office space, all while embracing their home’s traditional architecture? These design questions were quickly answered after LiLu developed a materials palette that combines energy with serenity. Staining custom-designed, traditionally detailed built-in cabinetry a cool gray contrasts the warm oak floor. Painting the cabinet insets with vertical colored stripes offsets the gray stain, grounds the space, and creates a visual rhythm. The colors of the stripes reflect her favorite hues and his Spartan green. And we integrated small touches of his favorite sports team such as a Letterman ’S’, collectables and Spartan green in subtle ways. From there our design team created a highly functional floor plan, complete with individual storage and separate work stations. We used wall space strategically to accommodate file and book storage, careful not to overwhelm the cozy room. We selected some darker elements throughout the design such as the stained wood floor, fireplace cladding, and reclaimed barn wood accent walls, and therefore opted to keep the kitchen cabinetry white with a twist: rift cut white oak with a semi-transparent paint, allowing the natural color to slightly bleed through thus enhancing its rustic nature. Grey quartz countertops echo the abundant natural rock formations on the property further connecting the kitchen to the home and gorgeous exterior surroundings. Unique details include the steel cladding behind the cooktop and sink to protect the wood countertop, reusing steel for the sleek custom kitchen table support, and a steel backsplash adjacent to the refrigerator.
