The Westover lot presented a unique challenge in balancing the owner’s program within McMansion ordinances. The program called for an open entertaining area on the main level that, while engaging with the site and neighborhood, also needed to maintain privacy from pedestrian traffic on this corner site. The living spaces are organized on the northeast side opening up to a loggia, garden and pool area. The entry, circulation, and dining areas disengage the prep area and study while maintaining a visual openness to the plan. Ordinances play a pivotal role in the massing leading to vertical and horizontal breaks, and in detaching the garage from the main body. The historic distinctiveness of Pemberton Heights is critical in the material selection, colors and details. Fenestration is carefully orchestrated to let ample light while playing an important role in the design language. Cost, simplicity and the neighborhood vernacular were driving factors in the design approach.

“Simple and sophisticated interior and exterior that harmonizes with the site. Like the integration of the flat roof element into the main gabled form next to garage. It negotiates the line between traditional and modernist forms and details successfully.”
This single-family vacation home on the Michigan shoreline accomplished the balance of large, glass window walls with the quaint beach aesthetic found on the neighboring dunes. Drawing from the vernacular language of nearby beach porches, a composition of flat and gable roofs was designed. This blending of rooflines gave the ability to maintain the scale of a beach cottage without compromising the fullness of the lake views.
The result was a space that continuously displays views of Lake Michigan as you move throughout the home. From the front door to the upper bedroom suites, the home reminds you why you came to the water’s edge, and emphasizes the vastness of the lake view.
Marvin Windows helped frame the dramatic lake scene. The products met the performance needs of the challenging lake wind and sun. Marvin also fit within the budget, and the technical support made it easy to design everything from large fixed windows to motorized awnings in hard-to-reach locations.

This home in Waleska, Georgia feels like a tree house with building projections hanging in space high over the steep lot below. The use of large fixed windows makes the interior spaces feel as if they are part of the outside, and puts the focus on the view. We used a language of materials on the exterior with different finishes on the foundation, house body, and the room projections, and wanted the windows to stand out while fitting into the natural setting. The warm, dark bronze clad color chosen fit into the surrounding wooded setting, while at the same time provided a clean modern look similar to metal windows without looking excessively commercial.
