Full Home Renovation and Addition. Industrial Artist Style. We removed most of the walls in the existing house and create a bridge to the addition over the detached garage. We created an very open floor plan which is industrial and cozy. Both bathrooms and the first floor have cement floors with a specialty stain, and a radiant heat system. We installed a custom kitchen, custom barn doors, custom furniture, all new windows and exterior doors. We loved the rawness of the beams and added corrugated tin in a few areas to the ceiling. Gorgeous master bath finished with Dal-Tile's Fabrique porcelain tile in the color Noir Linen polished. Tile size is 12"x24" installed in a brick joint pattern. The floor boasts underfloor heating on a timed thermostat.

This subtle sensibility defines the project. While evident in each detail, from the cabinetry to the fireplace surround, there were a few special elements. Starting in the gallery, we built a life size, playable tic- tac- toe board. This was achieved by using felt wrapped metal panels and CNC cut X’s and O’s imbedded with rare earth magnets. This ‘board’ was the outcome of what to do with the space below the I –beams. Originally rusted and flaking with a great patina, we were required to fire proof these beams if they were to remain exposed. This meant applying a fire proof, or intumescent paint, which covered the very elements that made the feature so appealing. This is where Willem Racke stepped in. In not more than a couple days, they recreated the patina and nuance that inspired the deviation. Another unique aspect of the project which pays homage to the building was executed by Maidenstone. Together with C.H. Burnham Inc., we searched America for a lot that matched the fabrication process and color of the original brick façade. Jana and Geof ended up discovering the match. Visible in some of the earlier photographs, this required more than a simple brick installation. As you can see, they taped off each individual brick to craft the look. Using a piping bag much like your favorite pastry chef, they installed the grout and then proceeded to carve and age it to match the original.

Many recent renovations had already taken place at this phenomenal old Tudor home. The kitchen redo was saved for last. Our mission, imposed by our client, was to create a jaw-dropping, ultra-functional space for family and friends to gather in for years to come. Naturally, the new kitchen would have to reflect the style of the home seamlessly. One challenge was to incorporate very large professional style appliances into the space while keeping the feel of a stately, yet warm home. Custom wood panels were designed for the refrigerator units to give a furniture feel. A copper hood was designed to bring in an old world element. Wood panels were applied to all other appliances – two dishwashers, a wine refrigerator, and a beverage refrigerator. An iron I-beam that separated the original kitchen from the butler’s pantry and back entry was covered in wood with chamfers to match the other ceiling beams in the home by a local woodworker. Due to the age of the home, the outside walls are concrete block. This necessitated chiseling troughs into the concrete for electrical wiring. Ceilings were studded randomly, so finding openings for recessed lighting was hit or miss. A large cluster of wiring and plumbing to the second floor had to be hidden behind cabinetry to the left of and above the refrigerators. HVAC wasn’t straight forward either. Toe kick heaters from the old kitchen had to be replaced with other sources. A propane tank had to be added to fuel the large dual fuel, double oven range. The homeowner wanted to add a walk-in pantry for extra storage, so space was taken from an existing exterior space. This created the need for extra insulation, supplemental heat and added lighting. Needless to say, mechanicals were a big challenge. Natural stone was added in backsplash areas to the ceiling to mimic the rectangular stone on the exterior of the home. Wood panels fill the backsplash areas under wall cabinets. Large chandeliers light the space. Open shelves at the wet bar/prep area offer convenient storage for grab and go service items. A built-in pantry with antique mirrored mullion doors hides a microwave, several other small appliances as well as dishes and food items. This pantry was tucked into an alcove for an added architectural element. Herringbone wood floors are classic and timeless. Wrought iron hardware and shelf brackets fit right in. We installed the decorative cornice across the front of the cabinetry, so it ties in seamlessly with the rest of the room. Micro shaker door style The door style is micro shaker (or slim shaker). The defining feature is a very slim outer frame, significantly narrower than a typical shaker door design. Traditional shaker cabinets have a relatively thick frame giving a sense of prominence to the design. In contrast, the slimmer frame of micro shaker cabinets gives the doors a more current, refined and understated look. Wallpapered inset panels The wardrobe doors feature wallpapered inset panels. The paper is Indigo Garden by Borrastapeter. The hand-painted print picturing a garden landscape is inspired by traditional Japanese art. Unlike wood, which can block heat, aluminium has excellent thermal conductivity and is lightweight and durable. Built-in desk and display shelves A built-in desk with an open shelving unit is set on the righthand side and forms a seamless part of the wardrobe.
