The Yountville Residence was designed to accommodate three family generations coming together over food, wine, outdoor living and the land. Located amongst continuous vineyards on the broad flood plain of the Napa River, creating a strong sense of place was foremost. Rich in a culture of wine making and production from the land, the site demanded a design solution that honored its history and elevated the experience of the land. The house pays homage to its context by creating a reimagined agrarian compound. Conceived as a family of smaller buildings, the architecture comes together around a shaded patio and pool. The kitchen, dining, and living spaces all flow onto the shaded outdoor patio and gardens. Low-sloped gable roofs evoke the agricultural history of the region and echo the gentle slope of the foothills beyond. The home remains understated – quietly drawing one’s attention back to the magnificent natural features of the landscape. Gently pulled back into the heart of the serene vineyards, it is carefully oriented with Stag’s Leap at the foot of the Vaca Mountains to the East and the Mayacamas Range to the West. Scenic views continue uninterrupted through the home. The design sensitively responds to land and place by recognizing key passive cooling and natural daylighting strategies present on the site. Broad overhanging roofs and the large slide away doors capture prevailing breezes up the valley. The patio, which is pulled close into a recessed cut-out in the main living space of the house, allows summer breezes across the pool to cool the house. Expansive windows and a narrow cross-section allow natural daylight to penetrate deep into the spaces and illuminate the rich and earthy palette of natural materials. The architecture created is a vehicle through which the powerful forms of the landscape craft a powerful experience of place. It is a respite from urban life, designed to bring one back to the basics: a love of family, land, food, and of course, wine.

A grand Larchmont Tudor with original millwork and details was ready for a new kitchen after raising the kids and spending decades cooking in a cramped dark kitchen. Designer Sarah Robertson of Studio Dearborn helped her client achieve a look that blended perfectly with the Tudor home. The kitchen was bumped out a bit to open up the space, and new millwork was designed to bring the original Tudor charm into the modernized kitchen space. A geometric Ann Sacks tile introduces shape and texture to the space, and a little modern edginess, while the cabinetry and doors reflect the old world motifs of a Tudor revival. Photos Adam Macchia. One of our main design goals with this new construction project was to create a comfortable family home with timeless lines that would allow for optimal flow & function for everyday living. Built as a spec home in the highly desirable Lakeview Heights neighbourhood of West Kelowna, the design needed to be broadly appealing to potential purchasers. We opted for a light and natural colour palette utilizing contemporary lines to create a welcoming and approachable feel throughout the home. With ample square footage - 3 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms on the upper floor, with a fully finished Basement, & Rental Suite, as well as above Garage Bonus Room - we were tasked with making revisions to the Architectural plans as needed to improve flow and function between the spaces. The Main Floor was specially re-designed to allow for a creation of a chef inspired, gourmet Kitchen with executive appliances, large Island, gas Range, and a very convenient Butler’s Pantry which sits beside the bright, open concept Living Room & Dining Room with floor-to-ceiling Fireplace. The re-designed outdoor entertaining space includes a spacious deck off the Kitchen, featuring an outdoor BBQ area with bar top counter to seat guests and relaxing conversation area. The home sold to a young family, and we’re told they love their new home.
