A home’s entrance sends a message, whether formal like a handshake or warm like a hug, it greets guests and owners with the same message. A mudroom entrance might invite a guest into the heart of the home like an old friend, or a formal entry may give a guest pause to look around and gauge the home’s owner by the impression left on the guest. One of our Red House “clients for life” is a couple that bought a builder grade development home in RI. After taking care of some high priority functional & aesthetic remodeling (a new master bathroom and walk-in closet), the owners contacted Red House again to finally upgrade the front door & entry to the home. The original, a low-end entry door from a big box store, had finally reached the end of its’ usable life. It was leaking air and starting to rust. It didn’t live up to the aesthetic improvements the owners had made in other areas of the home, and, it no longer served its purpose to shelter and protect or to welcome and greet. After gauging the space, we realized that with a few minor adjustments to the entry area, we could add some paneling above the door and center a window feature in the foyer. These details created a elegant, yet warm, formality. A three-quarter glass door with a unique window patter provides warm light and an openness that creates the friendly invitation of a true home. The newly remodeled space speaks to the quality standards of the owners of the home, and, in turn, it will continue to inform the identity of the family while they live there. McArthur Park has one of the highest densities in the USA with over 38,000 people per square mile and a total population of 120,000 people in 2.72 square miles. Offering shelter and comfort, the SIX breaks the prescriptive mold of the traditional shelter by creating public and private "zones" in which private space is deemphasized, in favor of large public areas. The organization of the space is intended to transform the way people live-away from a reclusive, isolating layout towards a community-oriented, interactive space. The ground level contains offices, support spaces for the veterans, bike storage and parking while the second level has a large public courtyard. Surrounded by four levels of housing units with balconies wrapped with a wood screen made from recycle planking the courtyard has large openings with green roofs that visually connects the space to the street on the lower level beyond. This allows the tenants to enjoy a secured open space while still connecting to the larger community. The uppermost level has a green roof, large public patio and edible garden with panoramic views of the area. The SIX distinguishes itself from most conventionally developed projects in that it incorporates energy efficient measures that exceed standard practice, optimize building performance, and ensure reduced energy use during all phases of construction and occupancy. The planning and design emerged from close consideration and employment of passive design strategies. These strategies include: locating and orienting the building to control solar cooling loads; shaping and orienting the building for exposure to prevailing winds; shaping the building to induce buoyancy for natural ventilation; designing windows to maximize day lighting; shading south facing windows and minimizing west-facing glazing; designing windows to maximize natural ventilation; utilizing low flow fixtures and storm water management; shaping and planning the interior to enhance daylight and natural air flow distribution. New Modern Green Home Designed with modern living in mind this project was a completely custom high performance home system built around modern design principles – principles that emphasized family interaction within functional and attractive living spaces. This home is the work of award-winning custom home builder Lou Sagatov, who has been on the forefront of modern design and ‘green’ home craft for the past decade. It was designed to be more energy efficient than 99% of the homes in Arlington, and was packed with high-end finishes including: a gourmet chef’s kitchen, a custom steel, glass & wood staircase, and elegantly-tiled spa-style bathrooms.

Trapezoid shaped site, hill range towards the north and the access road are the elements that form the character that the building takes on. At ground level, two stand-alone blocks taper towards the narrow end of the site; but on the two subsequent floors, the blocks are connected by communal spaces to form a “U” shaped building and creating generous open courtyard between the blocks. Residents are provided with spaces for formal and social activities. The second floor of the communal area features a gym, a small lounge and a plunge pool that overlooks the courtyard and the distant hills. The development is designed to read as a composition of simple lines, framing full height glass and textured finished elements that quietly animate the elevations. The goal of the development is to create a series of townhouses, where the sense of place is strong and expressed with a series of playful interactions between all the dwellings. The building’s facades appear homogeneous with terraces and planes used to highlight each apartment. Zigzagging terraces and stone cladded screen walls are dominant features used in the scheme to echo the ridges and texture of the hills beyond.
