This wet room in Doncaster had become so mouldy and dirty the owners didn’t know what to do with it. The Limestone and Marble Mosaics on the floor and the Ceramic wall tile and Grout throughout the bathroom had become so badly affected with mould, nothing they could buy from could resolve it. Following my site visit I was confident the room could be cleaned up (in-fact I have seen worse), I explained what we could do to restore and revamp the wet room and they were happy to go ahead with my quote. First, I opened windows to maximise ventilation and then working top down I set about tackling the Ceramic wall tile and grout by spraying on a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean. Spraying on the solution mixes it with air making it lighter and easier to stick to the wall where it can soak in and get to work breaking down the mould. After about fifteen minutes it was scrubbed into the tile and specifically the grout joints where it was needed most. This action releases grime and other contamination from the grout. The room needed a series of different treatments due to the different tiles and areas of mould, so I followed that up with Tile Doctor Duo Clean. This is a bleach-based cleaner which is brilliant at tackling mould and getting the grout back to its original colour. The Ceramic tile in this bathroom has a textured surface which traps dirt so to get them clean I also used Tile Doctor Oxy-Gel. Being a Gel is easily sticks to the vertical surface allowing for longer dwell times which allows the product to dissolve the dirt and make it easier to remove. With the walls looking much clear for my efforts I turned my attention to the Mosaic floor tiles. For these I went straight in with a cocktail combination of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean and Duo Clean cleaners which I knew from cleaning the wall tiles would have the right impact. I was also able to use a buffing machine fitted with a poly brush attachment and running at medium speed to do most of the scrubbing. The grout lines were green with mould, and I was able to get this process to return the Mosaics and grout lines back to their original state. The slurry was removed with a wet vacuum and rinsed thoroughly with water. It took many hours and repeated scrubbing to get the room looking like it should. I was then able to finally leave for the day and allow the wet room to dry out overnight. I returned the following morning and started by removing all the old silicone from the corners of the room, much of it had become stained and difficult to get clean so replacement was the best option. The waste was removed and replaced with a new bead of mould resistant silicone colour matched to suit the tiles. The Mosaics has fully dried by this point, so I was then able to apply a sealer to floor to seal in the Marble and Limestone floor Mosaics and grout. I used a couple of coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow for this, it’s a breathable impregnating sealer that’s suitable for wet rooms. For the wall tile and grout, I used an aerosol sealer which will help protect the walls from getting mouldy and dirty again. Once I had finished, I educated the owners on how to keep up the cleaning of the room supplying them with a complimentary bottle of Tile Doctor Aqua-Pro shower tile Cleaner. This is much better than any supermarket cleaner as it is pH neutral and will ensure that the newly applied sealant will not be prematurely affected. Hopefully, this will ensure it never gets quite so bad in the future however improved ventilation is the real key to solving that problem. In today’s society, people are used to things happening instantaneously, and they expect everything to happen at a fairly fast pace. However, when dealing with things like trees, there is no rushing mother nature and the natural growth process. These trees do not typically live as long as the other trees due to them being weaker from growing so fast. An example is the Arborvitae “Green Giant”. This is major kitchen remodel done on a tight budget! 1st thing I noticed in the original kitchen (please refer to before pictures) was that the ceiling height was lower than both the adjacent rooms, and of course the soffit cabinets made everything lower so I suggested we take the ceiling height up the match the other rooms. Through process of elimination I found the best place for the sink was in the corner because she would now have 2 windows for views of the neighborhood and a place to put the plants that once sat on the floor in the “breakfast nook”. Moving the gas cook top the exterior wall allowed for ease of installation and venting out also this was the best place to put it given the amount of windows. It is very important to me to design every kitchen with surface space on either side of the cook top so that you have enough room for baking racks, cookie sheets, etc.. to spread out. The solution to the double oven request was to put 2 of them under the counter instead of stacking them which would have taken up surface space. During the design meeting I asked how often to you close that door to the dining room? To which they replied “never, we always leave it open”. I knew then that door was a waste of space so I decided to toss that to make a bigger opening to make the kitchen more inviting as you enter from the dining room. Another thing I always talk about during kitchen designs is “landing zone”. You must have a surface to place things on once you enter the kitchen, be it groceries, keys, phone, wallet, etc.. But I find it functional and it keeps you from walking into a room with large things on either side of you. Again relating back to making sure the kitchen felt inviting. Definitely wanted make sure we had as much pullout kitchen accessories and deep drawers for ease of use because we did not have room for a lot of upper cabinets. I decided to take full advantage of those large open windows buy taking the tile to the ceiling and picture framing them with tile liners. The effect is that you see more light coming in because of the contrast of the darker tile. My solution to the clients request to get as much light in from the adjacent family room was to take out that kitchen desk and frame in a large opening. I needed to make sure that opening made a statement so instead of doing a standard door casing I added architectural details of molding around the doorway and highlighted by insetting the molding into the wall and painting the inset a different color. Once I was able to achieve bringing in the most light, I decided I could bring in a little drama by going with a dark wall color! It is okay to use dark wall colors as long as you have enough light so it still feels inviting. My solution to the radiator was to move it over to give us just enough room to squeeze in another cabinet for capturing as much storage as I could. I needed to make sure I had that “landing zone” so I wanted to place a counter top over the radiator, but how? I used a decorative post to give the kitchen a little something extra and to tie back in with the cabinets. Then I added a counter top above the wine refrigerator but both had to be the same height because they were across from each other. So what a great challenge this turned out be. Because of me needing to make the wine refrigerator counter top higher to match the other counter top, I was able to fit in a little drawer for wine accessories above the wine refrigerator. More storage! Yes!! Painting the radiator white to give it a fresh new look added a lot and was relatively simple in the grand scheme of things. Solution to pantry was to make it a cabinet pantry so that we didn’t have to work around the thickness of walls and a door. Island size was determined by NKBA standards of having enough room for traffic flow around the kitchen which allowed us 3 chairs. And if someone ever wanted to, they could use the counter above the radiator as a surface to work on. Of course we updated all the lighting, made sure we had under counter lighting, and they are all LED. Lastly porcelain floor tiles , ceramic backsplash and quartz counter tops were the material of choice for ease of maintenance and budget.

It contains no harmful chemicals and do not emit harmful radiation or gasses. Granite is heat resistant and is one of the most heat-resistant countertops on the market. You can place a hot pan out of the oven directly onto the countertop surface. Experts do recommend the use of a trivet when using appliances that emit heat for long periods of time, such as crockpots. Since the material is so dense, there is a small possibility heating one area of the top and not the entire thing, could cause the countertop to crack. Granite is scratch resistant. You can cut on it, but it will dull your knives! Granite scores a seven on Moh’s hardness scale. Granite countertops are considered to be a low maintenance countertop surface. The likelihood of needing to be repaired or resurfaced is low. Granite is a porous material. Most fabricators will apply a sealer to granite countertops before they are installed which will protect them from absorbing liquids too quickly. Many sealers last more than 10 years before needing to be reapplied. When they do need to be reapplied, it is something that most homeowners can do on their own as the process is similar to cleaning. Darker granites are very dense and sometimes don’t even require a sealer. When it comes to pricing, there are a lot of variables such as edge profile, total square footage, backsplash, etc. Don’t be fooled by the stereotype that all granite is expensive. Lower-range granites will cost less than high-range laminate. Though granite countertops are not considered “low range” in pricing, there are a lot of affordable options. If you are looking for something truly unique, consider an exotic granite. Some quarries are not easily accessible and/or only able to be quarried for short periods of time throughout the year. If these circumstances exist in a quarry with gorgeous stone, the price will be driven upward. You won’t find a lot of solid patterns or bright colors, but both do exist. Also, watch for a large range of color and pattern within the same color of stone. It’s always a good idea to view the exact slab(s) that will be fabricated for your kitchen to make sure they are what you expected to see from the sample. Another factor is that many exotic types of granite have huge flowing waves, and a small sample will not be an accurate representation of the whole slab. Granite countertops are very resistant to chemicals. Acids and bases will not harm the material. Understanding Marble: Marble is a porous, high-maintenance surface. Be prepared to see some scratches. Marble is a softer stone. However, marble is still so beautiful with the scratches! If you’ve ever gone to Italy, you can see the beautiful marble on floors and many restaurants. It’s a classic lasting look. Even with scratches. If you don't mind the extra work, they are a beautiful addition. Marble has a multifaceted ability to work with so many different design styles. If you're a homeowner looking for a wipe-and-go countertop, though, you'll probably want to skip this one. It's cost-effective, depending on the type of marble you buy. Carrara marble (a grayer version with softer veins from Carrara, Italy) is one of the least expensive natural countertop materials on the market, mainly because it's readily available. Calacatta marble, which offers a whiter surface and more dramatic veining, and the price tag goes up. Marble is heat-resistant — which is great — but you still need to be careful. Marble is heat resistant. Despite its ability to withstand high temps, you never want to place a piping hot pot on for risk of discoloring or burning the surface. We recommend always using a pot holder anyways. We don’t want to dissuade you from using marble. In fact, I personally have a marble island in my kitchen.
