Bender was able to take an old, closed in 1927 kitchen and transform it into an open transitional kitchen that functions properly for a 2014 family. Durable and washable cabinets make for ease of use, while sealed marble countertops give this space a luxurious feel. Photo Credit: Jim Fuhrmann

A stainless Dacor microwave drawer was installed in a base cabinet with a functioning drawer beneath it. This design choice helps maximize the amount of usable countertop space and makes the kitchen more visually appealing by tucking it out-of-sight instead of atop the counter. This also aids in the minimalistic and contemporary feel of the space.

Relocating to Portland, Oregon from California, this young family immediately hired Amy to redesign their newly purchased home to better fit their needs. The project included updating the kitchen, hall bath, and adding an en suite to their master bedroom. Removing a wall between the kitchen and dining allowed for additional counter space and storage along with improved traffic flow and increased natural light to the heart of the home. This galley style kitchen is focused on efficiency and functionality through custom cabinets with a pantry boasting drawer storage topped with quartz slab for durability, pull-out storage accessories throughout, deep drawers, and a quartz topped coffee bar/ buffet facing the dining area. The master bath and hall bath were born out of a single bath and a closet. While modest in size, the bathrooms are filled with functionality and colorful design elements. Durable hex shaped porcelain tiles compliment the blue vanities topped with white quartz countertops. The shower and tub are both tiled in handmade ceramic tiles, bringing much needed texture and movement of light to the space. The hall bath is outfitted with a toe-kick pull-out step for the family’s youngest member!

The contrasting tones of the white Grabill acrylic cabinets, quartz countertops, & dimensional backsplash tile behind the hood with the grays of the wall cabinets, glass backsplash tile, and tone of the stainless hood and oven create an overall visually appealing room. The rectilinear contemporary design is emphasized in the flat panel cabinetry as well as in the backsplash and streamline brushed nickel hardware.

Another element to achieve a more open concept was the addition of new rustic hickory, light hand-scraped, solid wood flooring that flows throughout the renovated space. The custom hood compliments the driftwood island finish and is enhanced with custom iron straps and over-sized bolts. The clients had been used to cooking on gas but are thrilled with their new GE Cafe induction cooktop. The cooktop is flanked by the 30" oven on the left and Advantium oven and warming drawer on the right. Installing these appliances undercounter freed up wall space for more cabinetry.

The look was continued into the new Dining Room with the addition of furniture-like Cabico cabinetry with modern V-groove doors in “Fawn” at the far end, adding additional storage as well as a convenient buffet countertop in the same “Cloudburst Concrete.” Four brass Mitzi “Lupe” scones provide an elegant, modern touch that plays off the other finishes.
