This is the first certified Passive House in the Chicago area, built by Biltmore Insulated Concrete (thermal shell) and Evolutionary Home Builders (GC). TBDA acted as architect and Passive House consultant, performing the rigorous calculations in conjunction with the spatial, structural, mechanical, and esthetic design considerations. Cadmium Interiors selected interior finishes and furniture. Passive Houses have inherently good indoor air quality due to the continuous ventilation and condensation-proof thermal shell, but we took this to the next level by becoming a pilot project for the Healthy Homes Initiative. All construction materials, finishes, paints, adhesives, caulks, etc., were selected to be non-toxic (i.e., no-added-formaldehyde cabinet construction), using Greenguard as a standard where possible.

Archadeck of Austin came up with a winning design including a stone retaining wall, patio, outdoor kitchen, and fire pit. All the dimensions had to be carefully calculated so we didn’t go over the allowed percentage of impervious space. We built the stone retaining wall on a concrete footer, built the stone walls for the outdoor kitchen, then filled in the patio area with sand. Sand is perfect for a project like this because it’s permeable and it packs nicely while water still filters through it.

Oftentimes, New York apartment living demands that every inch of furniture is justified, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice simplicity or compromise on the design aesthetic and character. Our team loves challenging traditional ideas of how a space should function. This elegant kitchen buffet features an integrated electric cook top, steam oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, and carefully calculated storage spaces hidden behind goat skin wrapped door fronts. Alpine, funk, gezellig - these words drove the design direction of this modern ski chalet. To emphasize the high ceilings and huge windows, a simple color palette of a custom black, white and whitewashed wood were incorporated, along with calculated hits of color and pattern. A reverse floor plan, with the kitchen and living room on the third floor, highlight the importance of the two spaces where the family spends most of their time together. Here, windows surround the space on all four sides providing ample natural light. A large, stoic fireplace is balanced with a not so basic Ikea sectional covered in a playful, funky, custom designed fabric based off of a 16th century Dutch painting. Function and durability reign supreme in the entrance and bedrooms, where rubber flooring was used for use with wet snow gear and bunks were installed for ultimate sleepover and mountain vibes. Through layered textures, a high contrast palette and unconventional design elements, this ski chalet is anything but ordinary. These are crown pleats with a brushed satin nickel curtain rod and cone finial. The cone matches the finial on the top of the lamps as well. The material is embroidery with silver and dark blue to complement the wall color. The drapes are placed in front of custom plantation shutters in extra-wide 4 1/2" louvers. Finally, we upgraded the drapes with black-out lining so they can be fully closed and block almost all the light. Don't forget to calculate an exact return for the drapery sides when doing black-out. That way you capture all the light leaking out the sides. The client was very pleased with the final results. Did everyone notice the pillow from the same fabric on the bed?

MODERN MIX. Silky gloss lacquer covers the kitchen’s towering white cabinets. A tall pullout pantry and china storage flank each side of the integrated stainless wall oven. To the left, a pair of milky matte glass cabinet doors conceal shallow storage. Underfoot lies a white glass floor. The tiles, measuring 3 feet square, required a calculated new floor system to support the extra weight and protect the stability of the new glass. Inspiration for a transitional bathroom remodel in New York

This newly-created Mud Room/Green Lab was an added benefit to a kitchen remodeling project. It was designed from an existing 9'x5' garage storage space previously unaccessible via the main house. The clients requested, if possible to create a new space for their Bonsai Tree collection. Obviously, the plants needed water, day light and easy outside access. The kitchen space was also a bit too small. Fortunately, the size of the garage itself gave us the possibility to move the entire back wall inside without sacrificing the parking ability. New supporting beams were calculated by the structural engineer. Enlarging the previous storage allowed us to consider it a “Mud room/Green Lab"and provide the connection between the new spaces.
