This newly-created Mud Room/Green Lab was an added benefit to a kitchen remodeling project. It was designed from an existing 9'x5' garage storage space previously unaccessible via the main house. The clients requested, if possible to create a new space for their Bonsai Tree collection. Obviously, the plants needed water, day light and easy outside access. The kitchen space was also a bit too small. Fortunately, the size of the garage itself gave us the possibility to move the entire back wall inside without sacrificing the parking ability. New supporting beams were calculated by the structural engineer. Enlarging the previous storage allowed us to consider it a “Mud room/Green Lab"and provide the connection between the new spaces.

This custom project showcases a soft statement of style and sophistication. In this grand staircase area our client wanted a custom installation of a carpet with a classic pattern without a border. The wood reveal was kept at about 2 inches. Installation in a space such as this requires precise calculations, extra wide pie shapes and a seamless transition step by step.

Green (wet) timber shrinks as it dries. It shrinks roughly twice as much along the growth rings as it does across the rings–which is why timber develops drying checks. These checks have almost no effect on the strength of the timber, and engineers take checking into account in their calculations. Aesthetically, we like checks, and think of them like wrinkles in a cotton shirt–it proves the timber is real (and not a box beam). Checking can be minimized to a certain extent. For example: specifying FOHC (Free of Heart Center), selecting a timber species with less shrinkage, slowing the drying process, or purchasing dry timber (reclaimed or radio frequency kiln dried) and orienting the checks in specific timbers so as to be less visible (i.e. toward an outside wall). In the timber industry, a drying check is not the same thing as a split. A check almost always stops at the heart (the center of the tree) of the timber, whereas a split breaks the timber into 2 pieces. © Carolina Timberworks

Making a real impression by designing & building with exceptional people is exactly the effect JL Design & the client as owner-builder have achieved with “Scarborough House” in Scarborough, NSW. The brief required the dwelling to take maximum advantage of stunning views over the ocean & nearby escarpment cliffs. The residence was also to be a contemporary modernist four bedroom family dwelling, maximising built external living & pool areas. The client was extensively involved with the overall design, & carried out material selection, interior detailing and selection of fixtures and fittings. This collective method guaranteed a result where the client as the builder, through continued personal investment throughout the design and construction achieved a stunning result. The concrete, steelwork, windows, timber & various forms of cladding, joinery and concealed lighting are all custom made hand crafted elements. The design called for minimal tolerances, requiring a high level of skill and cooperation between trades. “Scarborough House” features BlueScope Colorbond monument matt ribbed wall cladding with rendered & ‘rendered look’ areas in off-white. A vertical feature hardwood timber screen to the side of the entry softens the ‘industrial’ feel, giving a modernist external appearance. Carefully calculated overhangs allow a passive solar solution to heating & cooling, with efficient reverse-cycle air conditioning required only during weather extremes. Internally, timber floors to the upper living areas give a feel of comfort & warmth. The warm, substantial character of the dwelling is carefully composed by means of the clarity of the detailing, a palette of tactical natural materials and the careful manipulation of light.

The bathroom I was tasked with redesigning initially had a very inefficient layout which only allowed for a single sink, an awkward corner shower and an odd bathtub with bulky tile surround. The clients have a second bathroom that houses a generous bathtub, so for practicality’s sake they preferred a large walk-in shower for their ensuite. I immediately understood that to maximize the floor plan I needed to relocate the entry to the adjacent wall and close the opening to the existing door. This gave me the opportunity to reorient the vanity direction, doubling it in size and allowing for two sinks and 90 inches of storage space. I deleted the previous bathtub and redirected the shower to this area, then increased its size by reframing a portion of the adjoining closet. Keeping with the bathrooms high-end aesthetic direction, I designed a fluted vanity, hand built from solid white oak. I meticulously calculated the spacing so each flute fit seamlessly, resulting in a compelling textural element. The vanity and matching fluted toe kick were both adorned with natural grey marble, setting the stage for the most lavish towel storage and countertop. I opted for thin matte sinks with curved lines to compliment the flutes and bring an overall element of softness to the space. In an effort to maximizing the already plentiful storage, I had hidden shelving framed into the walls and covered it with hand made mirrors that hinged for easy access. I balanced the pair of mirrors with modern light fixtures that added a contemporary punch and harmonized with the sleek mixed-metal faucets. This ensuite oasis was polished off with graphic art, crisp linens and foreshadowed with a custom makeup vanity that utilized matching materials and flawless functionality. No detail of this space went unconsidered.

Client requested that I plan a formal rose garden. Soil needed a great deal of sand, fresh soil, and fertilizers. Irrigation needed to be installed as a drip line for all roses, so the measurements had to be exact. Once the total for all boxwoods as hedge were calculated, client decided not to install that portion.

Words by Wilson Hack The best architecture allows what has come before it to be seen and cared for while at the same time injecting something new, if not idealistic. Spartan at first glance, the interior of this stately apartment building, located on the iconic Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, quickly begins to unfold as a calculated series of textures, visual artifacts and perfected aesthetic continuities. The client, a globe-trotting entrepreneur, selected Jeanne Schultz Design Studio for the remodel and requested that the space be reconditioned into a purposeful and peaceful landing pad. It was to be furnished simply using natural and sustainable materials. Schultz began by gently peeling back before adding only the essentials, resulting in a harmoniously restorative living space where darkness and light coexist and comfort reigns. The design was initially guided by the fireplace—from there a subtle injection of matching color extends up into the thick tiered molding and ceiling trim. “The most reckless patterns live here,” remarks Schultz, referring to the checkered green and white tiles, pink-Pollack-y stone and cast iron detailing. The millwork and warm wood wall panels devour the remainder of the living room, eliminating the need for unnecessary artwork. A curved living room chair by Kave Home punctuates playfully; its shape reveals its pleasant conformity to the human body and sits back, inviting rest and respite. “It’s good for all body types and sizes,” explains Schultz. The single sofa by Dareels is purposefully oversized, casual and inviting. A beige cover was added to soften the otherwise rectilinear edges. Additionally sourced from Dareels, a small yet centrally located side table anchors the space with its dark black wood texture, its visual weight on par with the larger pieces. The black bulbous free standing lamp converses directly with the antique chandelier above. Composed of individual black leather strips, it is seemingly harsh—yet its soft form is reminiscent of a spring tulip. The continuation of the color palette slips softly into the dining room where velvety green chairs sit delicately on a cascade array of pointed legs. The doors that lead out to the patio were sanded down and treated so that the original shape and form could be retained. Although the same green paint was used throughout, this set of doors speaks in darker tones alongside the acute and penetrating daylight. A few different shades of white paint were used throughout the space to add additional depth and embellish this shadowy texture. Specialty lights were added into the space to complement the existing overhead lighting. A wall sconce was added in the living room and extra lighting was placed in the kitchen. However, because of the existing barrel vaulted tile ceiling, sconces were placed on the walls rather than above to avoid penetrating the existing architecture.

On first glance, this staircase reads as restrained. White oak treads rise with natural warmth, metal balusters hold their disciplined rhythm, and the painted black railing traces a clean, straight path upward. Then you notice the elliptical stringer wrap, and the whole composition shifts. Unlike a circular curve drawn with a compass, an ellipse requires mathematical calculation and a craftsman who knows how to make that complexity disappear. Here, it does exactly that. Natural light finishes the story. Moving through the space across the day, it deepens the oak grain, catches the metal, and lets the black railing guide the eye along the handrail's elliptical path from start to finish. These are crown pleats with a brushed satin nickel curtain rod and cone finial. The cone matches the finial on the top of the lamps as well. The material is embroidery with silver and dark blue to complement the wall color. The drapes are placed in front of custom plantation shutters in extra-wide 4 1/2" louvers. Finally, we upgraded the drapes with black-out lining so they can be fully closed and block almost all the light. Don't forget to calculate an exact return for the drapery sides when doing black-out. That way you capture all the light leaking out the sides. The client was very pleased with the final results. Did everyone notice the pillow from the same fabric on the bed?

These are returning clients of Sosna, for whom we previously completed a Laundry Room and multiple Bathroom renovation. They are a family of professionals in the restaurant industry, who returned to Sosna to renovate their outdated, and cramped Kitchen. They found it especially cramped when entertaining guests, as the only space to gather was around the cooking area. During the renovation process, it was discovered that the existing window had leaked and caused extensive damage to the exterior wall. This damage was repaired with new framing and insulation, and a larger window was installed allowing for a beautiful view of the backyard. In the newly renovated Kitchen, a large peninsula in the center of the room features unique grooved panels with LED lighting and a quartz waterfall countertop. Creating the grooved panels to align perfectly with the tall cabinets on the opposite wall and also fit the LED channels required detailed and careful calculations. This peninsula not only enhances the aesthetics of the space but also serves a functional purpose. It provides a designated area for food preparation and cooking behind it, while the opposite side remains a convenient and safe space for entertaining, allowing guests to communicate and interact with their hosts effortlessly. The back wall of the Kitchen features the stove and large hood cabinet, which are flanked by 2 appliance garages to hide and store small countertop appliances. As well, cabinetry that is fully loaded with drawer and cabinet accessories with pull-outs and inserts keeps the countertops free from clutter. The right side of the Kitchen includes the fridge, pantry, and tall cabinetry with plenty of useful storage. A wine fridge and built-in coffee machine are conveniently placed for entertaining. Given the new cabinetry was a mix of doors with a thin shaker profile, and doors with grooves, the installation of knobs and handles required careful measurement to ensure that they not only fit the grooves, but lined up for a clean and cohesive look. Single-family new construction in Albinea (RE), Italy, certified Class A by CasaClima Agency for high energy efficiency. This single-family home was designed as part of an existing development plan near Albinea (in the province of Reggio Emilia), for which there were prescribed traditional design guidelines imposed. The architectural form, therefore, references a traditional Emilian farmhouse with a central "porta morta" area that acts as the entrance and stairwell. The color palette blends in with the surrounding hay fields, and the rear of the house offers decks and balconies overlooking the hills of the Reggiano Apennines. Our challenge was to focus on the efficiency of the building envelope, without changing the orientation of the building. Despite the fact that the shorter side of the house is facing South and through careful design calculations and testing during construction, we were able to achieve Class A in the CasaClima rating scheme, one of the highest Italian certifications available.
