A 1927 colonial home in Shaker Heights, Ohio, received a breathtaking renovation that required extensive work, transforming it from a tucked away, utilitarian space, to an all-purpose gathering room, a role that most kitchens embrace in a home today. The scope of work changed over the course of the project, starting more minimalistically and then quickly becoming the main focus of the house's remodeling, resulting in a staircase being relocated and walls being torn down to create an inviting focal point to the home where family and friends could connect. The focus of the functionality was to allow for multiple prep areas with the inclusion of two islands and sinks, two eating areas (one for impromptu snacking and small meals of younger family members and friends on island no. two and a built-in bench seat for everyday meals in the immediate family). The kitchen was equipped with all Subzero and Wolf appliances, including a 48" range top with a 12" griddle, two double ovens, a 42" built-in side by side refrigerator and freezer, a microwave drawer on island no. one and a beverage center and icemaker in island no. two. The aesthetic feeling embraces the architectural feel of the home while adding a modern sensibility with the revamped layout and graphic elements that tie the color palette of whites, chocolate and charcoal. The cabinets were custom made and outfitted with beaded inset doors with a Shaker panel frame and finished in Benjamin Moore's OC-17 White Dove, a soft white that allowed for the kitchen to feel warm while still maintaining its brightness. Accents of walnut were added to create a sense of warmth, including a custom premium grade walnut countertop on island no. one from Brooks Custom and a TV cabinet with a doggie feeding station beneath. Bringing the cabinet line to the 8'6" ceiling height helps the room feel taller and bold light fixtures at the islands and eating area add detail to an otherwise simpler ceiling detail. The 1 1/4" countertops feature Calacatta Gold Marble with an ogee edge detail. Special touches on the interiors include secret storage panels, an appliance garage, breadbox, pull-out drawers behind the cabinet doors and all soft-close hinges and drawer glides. A kneading area was made as a part of island no. one for the homeowners' love of baking, complete with a stone top allowing for dough to stay cool. Baskets beneath store kitchen essentials that need air circulation. The room adjacent to the kitchen was converted to a hearth room (from a formal dining room) to extend the kitchen's living space and allow for a natural spillover for family and guests to spill into. Inspiration for a bathroom remodel in Philadelphia

This Lemont kitchen is ready to be featured in a magazine! Mixing traditional details with a modern color palette gives this kitchen a fresh, unique personality. Soaring ceilings allow the cabinetry to reach 108” tall. Craig Thompson Photography The client was looking for a contemporary but comfortable space as a gathering place for themselves, their family and friends in the city. They wanted color, which was right up my alley. The specific color requests were orange, aqua and purple. We used the orange and aqua in the main living space adding a rich chocolate to the mix to provide a bold color palette. One theme that was consistent in the design was the use of circles, ellipses, and flowing curves. This was evidenced in the fabrics, furniture, wall sconces, bar design, artwork, TV area wall covering, and artwork. Often times contemporary design is very angular, straight lined and rigid. This was not the desired look for this client. They desired an open layout in the main living space to accentuate the breathtaking view. With these units there are always structural issues to be worked through. There is a structural column in an inopportune place in the main Living area. To make sense of this, it was incorporated into a bar that goes right up to the full height window. When sitting at the bar, it almost feels like you are floating in mid air, looking down on the hustle and bustle of the city. The bar is faced with dimensional glass tile with quartz countertops. An elliptical shaped floating bulkhead is intersected by the bold orange column. The bulkhead was finished in the dark chocolate with a silver deco molding around the face like a bracelet, architectural jewelry as I like to refer to it as. The bar creates an interesting architectural focal point, but also provides function for entertaining. We did a softer version of the aqua, combined with gray and cream for the color palette in the Master suite. I was able to give the client her request for purple which we did in the Guest Bedroom (not photographed) as the accent wall behind the bed and combined it with gold to complete the scheme.

A family of five, who live in a prestigious McLean neighborhood, was looking to renovate and upgrade their 20 year old kitchen. She was tired of the bleached look on her kitchen, and now was looking for light but updated look at her kitchen. She also did not want to deal with having a cook top in her Island and wanted professional appliances and better traffic pattern. Challenges: The bulkheads were stuffed with lots of duct work and plumbing. All need to be relocated in order to take advantage of the height. The kitchen was over a very tight crawl space area that made access to run gas line, and plumbing line much more challenging. Adjacent family room needed to become part of this grand plan and as part of the oval scheme of work tie into kitchen cabinetry. Design Solutions: The plan was to give a French country look to this kitchen, by carrying the overall soft and creamy color scheme of main floor furniture in the new kitchen. The back wall of the kitchen now occupied by 48” professional range under a custom wood hood. New tower style refrigerator covered in matching wood panels is placed at the end of the run, just create more work space on both sides of the stove. New plumbing was run for prep. Sink in the new island in order to have a second cook can work in the kitchen. The large contrasting Island in a Dark chocolate finish now offers a second dishwasher, a beverage center and built in microwave. Also serves as a large buffet style counter space and accommodate up to five seats around it. Smart use of detailed crown and trim molding are highlights of this kitchen. Just to the west of this kitchen, we used to have a bare was with a 36” fireplace in it. Our goal was to get all surrounding walls involved with this renovation. Now the entirety of this wall in filled with lower cabinetry and upper display cabinetry and a working station at the end of the run. The fireplace was wrapped with matching color mantel and got equipped for a new large TV above it New cabinetry was added to butler area to harmonize with new kitchen. We have introduced a large size porcelain tile floor for entire family room and kitchen just to give it bigger space look and easy upon the traffic pattern. Outcome: The rare exotic counter top stone was the most favorite item in this kitchen for the homeowner. The way it connects with a brown glazing of the cabinetry and compliments the stone backsplash tile with an interesting picture frame inset niche above stove area is breathtaking. She is thrilled with the end result and cannot wait to celebrate her son’s engagement party in her new and exciting kitchen.

This steeply sloped property was converted into a backyard retreat through the use of natural and man-made stone. The natural gunite swimming pool includes a sundeck and waterfall and is surrounded by a generous paver patio, seat walls and a sunken bar. Just off the kitchen, this small, well organized home office constructed in 2015 for a West Bloomfield family gets the job done. Teak cabinetry in a Dark Chocolate finish from Tafisa keeps supplies organized and out of sight. The upper doors have no handles, keeping the look sleek. Lower cabinets feature slim line silver pulls. Task lighting mounted under the upper cabinets illuminates the Calacatta quartzite counters to provide a bright, easy to use desk surface. The ‘L’ shaped counter continues down the window wall to provide plenty of room for the family to pay bills or do homework. A linen covered tack board offers a handy place to display important memos and treasured memorabilia.

Colorful and rich style When a repeat client shows up on your doorstep with his third home to furnish and wants to start from scratch and go really bold, you just embrace him, scoot him right up to the resource room, and don’t ask questions! I mean, who does not love a client that embraces velvet, leather, silk and wallcoverings? This lush, vibrant lounge space was all created from the want to really deep dive into something different, eclectic and more traveled. The original small, narrow, dimly lit room totally delivered on helping accomplish that mood. Mixing a little of that Ming dynasty-inspired strawberry red with a deep chocolate mohair on the sectional and cladding the room in a soft, amethyst woven wallcovering. We loved the interplay and “non-matchiness” that this space embraced. Lighting and art were both about telling a story in this room – accenting conversational opportunities and an almost gallery-esque feel. Designating a more dynamic and unusual, sculptural feel – from the harder lines of the statement floor lamp in the living room across to the sprawling, slightly modern bloom of the dining area fixture. Jewel of a space The area rug had to ground the already bold furniture and lend itself to the darker wood floors, and a dusky green wool proved the ticket. We loved the almost pixelated pattern the hand-knotted wool lent to the overall design. A little hint of oxblood, chocolate and blue picked up in accents elsewhere, but the tone of almost jade really caught us about this piece. Not enough can be said about the accent of a dining space either (which in terms of space planning was the only way to balance this long, narrow “hallway” of a room off the kitchen). Citron velvet on the low-profile chairs left the space feeling open, but fun for games and cocktail parties. Plus, the cerused wood dining table was a great complement – offering depth without a conflict to the existing flooring or nearby sectional. Being able to view this space as a whole was very important to us! From the selection of sconces carried throughout (that wonky placement was existing and with so little opportunity to add cans we had to play up the new fixtures in a way that make them feel purposeful and desirable.), to the balance of color and temperature in each furniture grouping. Sometimes working floor to ceiling in an existing space can pose a lot of unique challenges when it comes to furnishing projects. However, we loved that the client embraced our drive to really punch up the visual feel of this living/dining combo. Also, we know the enjoyment he gets from the finished product is a testament to hunting for the right pieces, designing with unusual and luxe fabric combinations, and managing the inclusion of budget-friendly surprises that always balance a job well done.
