The client’s request was quite common - a typical 2800 sf builder home with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, living space, and den. However, their desire was for this to be “anything but common.” The result is an innovative update on the production home for the modern era, and serves as a direct counterpoint to the neighborhood and its more conventional suburban housing stock, which focus views to the backyard and seeks to nullify the unique qualities and challenges of topography and the natural environment.
The Terraced House cautiously steps down the site’s steep topography, resulting in a more nuanced approach to site development than cutting and filling that is so common in the builder homes of the area. The compact house opens up in very focused views that capture the natural wooded setting, while masking the sounds and views of the directly adjacent roadway. The main living spaces face this major roadway, effectively flipping the typical orientation of a suburban home, and the main entrance pulls visitors up to the second floor and halfway through the site, providing a sense of procession and privacy absent in the typical suburban home.
Clad in a custom rain screen that reflects the wood of the surrounding landscape - while providing a glimpse into the interior tones that are used. The stepping “wood boxes” rest on a series of concrete walls that organize the site, retain the earth, and - in conjunction with the wood veneer panels - provide a subtle organic texture to the composition.
The interior spaces wrap around an interior knuckle that houses public zones and vertical circulation - allowing more private spaces to exist at the edges of the building. The windows get larger and more frequent as they ascend the building, culminating in the upstairs bedrooms that occupy the site like a tree house - giving views in all directions.
The Terraced House imports urban qualities to the suburban neighborhood and seeks to elevate the typical approach to production home construction, while being more in tune with modern family living patterns.

Lincoln Lighthill Architect employed several discrete updates that collectively transform this existing row house.
At the heart of the home, a section of floor was removed at the top level to open up the existing stair and allow light from a new skylight to penetrate deep into the home. The stair itself received a new maple guardrail and planter, with a Fiddle-leaf fig tree growing up through the opening towards the skylight.
On the top living level, an awkwardly located entrance to a full bathroom directly off the main stair was moved around the corner and out of the way by removing a little used tub from the bathroom, as well as an outdated heater in the back corner. This created a more discrete entrance to the existing, now half-bath, and opened up a space for a wall of pantry cabinets with built-in refrigerator, and an office nook at the rear of the house with a huge new awning window to let in light and air.
Downstairs, the two existing bathrooms were reconfigured and recreated as dedicated master and kids baths. The kids bath uses yellow and white hexagonal Heath tile to create a pixelated celebration of color. The master bath, hidden behind a flush wall of walnut cabinetry, utilizes another Heath tile color to create a calming retreat.
Throughout the home, walnut thin-ply cabinetry creates a strong contrast to the existing maple flooring, while the exposed blond edges of the material tie the two together. Rounded edges on integral pulls and door edges create pinstripe detailing that adds richness and a sense of playfulness to the design.

Challenge: Our clients wanted to modernize the look of their 1997 home, and update all electrical and plumbing infrastructure. Structural issues were apparent at the onset of the project with missing bearing points and beams that should have been incorporated into the original build.
Solution: The work started with a complete strip out of the interior. Existing finishes, appliances, kitchen, bathrooms, flooring, electrical, plumbing, doors and frames, heating systems, all trim, drywall, insulation and vapour barrier we all removed. This left a bare wood frame shell which required some tricky structural changes to open up the interior necessitating load transfer modifications and additional foundations.
The main stair was widened to create a luxurious ascent to the master bedroom overlooking the golf course. All bathrooms were fully replaced with a new kitchen designed to be open to the dining room and living room. The new interior finishes, and the essential design thereof, came together smoothly with all trades meeting agreed time frames and prices.
We had a great time working with the client throughout the project. Communication was strong during the course of construction which resulted in a renovation that exceeded the client’s criteria and that also met our exacting level of quality.

We love it when a home becomes a family compound with wonderful history. That is exactly what this home on Mullet Lake is. The original cottage was built by our client’s father and enjoyed by the family for years. It finally came to the point that there was simply not enough room and it lacked some of the efficiencies and luxuries enjoyed in permanent residences. The cottage is utilized by several families and space was needed to allow for summer and holiday enjoyment. The focus was on creating additional space on the second level, increasing views of the lake, moving interior spaces and the need to increase the ceiling heights on the main level. All these changes led for the need to start over or at least keep what we could and add to it. The home had an excellent foundation, in more ways than one, so we started from there.
It was important to our client to create a northern Michigan cottage using low maintenance exterior finishes. The interior look and feel moved to more timber beam with pine paneling to keep the warmth and appeal of our area. The home features 2 master suites, one on the main level and one on the 2nd level with a balcony. There are 4 additional bedrooms with one also serving as an office. The bunkroom provides plenty of sleeping space for the grandchildren. The great room has vaulted ceilings, plenty of seating and a stone fireplace with vast windows toward the lake. The kitchen and dining are open to each other and enjoy the view.
The beach entry provides access to storage, the 3/4 bath, and laundry. The sunroom off the dining area is a great extension of the home with 180 degrees of view. This allows a wonderful morning escape to enjoy your coffee. The covered timber entry porch provides a direct view of the lake upon entering the home. The garage also features a timber bracketed shed roof system which adds wonderful detail to garage doors.
The home’s footprint was extended in a few areas to allow for the interior spaces to work with the needs of the family. Plenty of living spaces for all to enjoy as well as bedrooms to rest their heads after a busy day on the lake. This will be enjoyed by generations to come.

Having an eye for great interior design yet no clue on where to start or how to narrow down their aesthetic vision, a young family turned to Décor Aid to bring their drab pre-war Upper West Side apartment to life. With two young daughters in tow, our clients were looking for high style décor grounded in practicality and function – namely for their foyer, living room, dining room, and den.
Armed with a variety of inspiration from traditional to ultra-modern, they knew that they wanted their apartment’s interior design to look put together and thought through, but were short on a concise design direction.
In comes Décor Aid interior designer Gabrielle G. to revive their stark home with inspired design. After their initial in-home consultation, Gabrielle honed in on key decorative touchstones the couple had interest in and compiled a list of must-haves as an aesthetic foundation for the home.
Starting with fresh coats of pure white paint to liven up and brighten each room, Gabrielle took advantage of the apartments closed floor plan and gave each room it’s own design signature rather than having to ensure that everything flowed together – in turn, giving her more freedom.
Save for a china cabinet and formal dining table, Gabrielle was tasked with sourcing furnishings and accessories and went for clean simplicity as the couple also expressed that they’d like to have pieces that can move with them as their family grows while also being conducive for family life.
As you can see, the space is grounded with soothing neutrals so Gabrielle brought in pops of color and texture through accessories and abstract art for a sophisticated yet casual vibe.
The end result boasts concise design and pulled together everyday glamor for this modern family home that our clients adore, and so do we.

This newly completed contemporary island style Florida home overlooks the Roosevelt Channel, on the Bay side of Captiva Island, and is graced with the sunrise in the mornings.
Repeat clients remind us of the success of previous landscape designs and of lasting relationships built while offering new and challenging opportunities for creative design. This client expressed a desire for a colorful tropical garden with emphasis on tropical plants, creative color palette and privacy.
A grove of coconut palms with lush bamboo and a dense clusia hedge with a small tropical garden at the entry of the property screen views to the interior of the property plant a seed of intrigue for what lies around the corner beyond the decorative tabby stucco gate columns. Upon passing under the grove of coconuts and rounding the corner of the drive, the property opens to an expansive front yard with colorful tropical garden beds and channels views to the newly completed residence. Gardens containing colorful bromeliads, bougainvillea and tropical palms with a variety of leaf shape and texture and color draw upon influences of Brazilian garden design. Manicured swaths of Empire Zoysa separates the various gardens and allows for the user to stroll and explore the different gardens.
The winding drive terminates at the front entry in a large tear drop shape turn around with massive coconuts in the center island surrounded by seven Sylvester Date palms around the outside of the drive. The entire perimeter of the turn around is surrounded with tropical gardens and intimate tropical gardens flank each side of the main entrance stairs. The hardscape pattern and color was selected to compliment the coquina tabby shell stucco finish on the foundation walls. The completed hardscape design including retaining walls, driveway, golf cart paths and private walks, is the result of collaborating closely with the owner over multiple revisions.
The back of the residence overlooks an expansive resort-like pool and spa and a pool deck that terminates just feet from the seawall of the Roosevelt Channel. Tropical vegetation at each side of the property offers privacy to the pool area but is manicured to preserve views to the bay beyond. This truly is an island paradise.

Historic 1913 North Shore Farmhouse Gets Complete Makeover
1913 Glenview, IL Farmhouse
Glenview, Il. (December 10, 2013) — A century-old Glenview home successfully completed it’s extensive exterior restoration courtesy of Chicagoland home exterior company A.B. Edward Enterprises, Inc. Originally built in 1913, the house is a two-story framed farmhouse.

“These are the types of projects our company loves performing,” said Bo Mikuta, president of A.B. Edward. “When we met with the client we discussed the scope of the remodel, reviewed a list of project changes, and put together a workable budget, and we were very excited to be chosen as the sole contractor.”
Remodeling this farmhouse required a myriad of exterior services, all provided by the one contractor. A.B. Edward rebuilt the porch entirely and restored the brick foundation. A.B. Edward also installed GAF roofing shingles, Pella windows, and James Hardie lap and shake siding.
The complete list of services performed for the farmhouse’s renovation include the following:
- GAF Roofing Shingles
- James Hardie Siding
- Pella Windows
- Aluminum Gutter Gards
- Custom Garage Doors
- Wall Insulation
- Masonry Chimney Rebuild
- Electrical Installation / Repair
- Carpentry Deck and Porch Build
- Restoration of Brick Foundation
Owner Megan McClug said:
“How do you describe the work of successfully reviving a piece of history over 100 years old? Some might call it a miracle. We call it experience, talent and attention to detail. The exterior of our 100-year old farmhouse needed every bit of attention to make it an energy efficient and secure home for our young family. It was important to us to find a local-community company and also one with deep know-how about remodeling exteriors. A.B. Edward is the definition of an exterior home specialist, and our experience working with them was simply the best.
A.B. Edward gave us a detailed construction contract and they were attentive to every change, addition and question we raised during both the bidding and finalization. Their entire crew worked very hard and were extremely efficient and clean. They also completed our project on time and within budget! A.B. Edward replaced our home’s roof, 22 windows, insulated the walls, new siding, gutters, garage door, and demolished and built a new porch within 3 months.”
The Glenview farmhouse was built in 1913. It went on the market in 1961 with a non-conforming apartment on the second floor. A.B. Edward completed the exterior restoration in four months.
A.B. Edward has been family owned and operated since it began business in 2003. Serving the Chicagoland area’s home exterior needs, A.B. Edward is located in Wheeling, IL, and can be contacted at (847) 827-1605 or info@abedward.com.
“We are so happy with the look and feel of our remodeled exterior home. Thank you to everyone at AB Edward!

This two-tone frameless kitchen blends modern style with smart functionality, maximizing storage while maintaining the client’s existing layout. With a concrete slab foundation, design flexibility was limited, but thoughtful details elevated the space. The unique island cooktop with a custom downdraft cabinet became a striking focal point, combining innovation with seamless integration. Encore's Oregon Pine textured melamine brings a soft, natural warmth that pairs effortlessly with Frameless Current’s Simply White. The client’s choice to mix slab doors with a modified shaker adds subtle contrast and personality. Neolith Himalaya Crystal Décor countertops tie the elements together, creating a refined and cohesive aesthetic.

After tearing down this home's existing addition, we poured a new foundation but kept the original fireplace. We perfectly aligned the cupola on top of the roof, with the upper story windows and those with the lower windows, giving the addition a clean and crisp look. Using granite from Chester County, mica schist stone and hardy plank siding on the exterior walls helped the addition to blend in seamlessly with the original house. We added a new flagstone patio and paver walkway to complete the area. Inside the addition there is a new kitchen great room, a laundry room and a sitting room.
Inside, we customized each new space by paying close attention to the little details. Reclaimed wood for the mantle and shelving, sleek and subtle lighting under the reclaimed shelves, unique wall and floor tile, recessed outlets in the island, walnut trim on the hood, paneled appliances, and repeating materials in a symmetrical way work together to give the interior a sophisticated yet comfortable feel.

Homeowner Services of Michigan is excited to present a remarkable project: reimagining an existing back room into a spacious first-floor master suite. This transformation combines comfort, style, and functionality, creating a luxurious private retreat for our client.
Project Overview:
We began by completely reconfiguring the back room to accommodate a spacious first-floor master suite. The newly installed hardwood floors provide a warm and inviting foundation, enhancing the overall aesthetic and adding timeless elegance to the space.
The master suite now features two generous walk-in closets, offering ample storage and organization solutions. We installed a new bedroom window to welcome natural light, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.
For added convenience and modern appeal, we included recessed lighting throughout the suite. This not only improves the room's functionality but also adds a sleek and contemporary touch.
A significant aspect of this project was the integration of a private first-floor bathroom, providing easy access and enhancing the suite's overall luxury. The new expanded rear doorway opens directly into the client’s private garden retreat, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. This feature offers a tranquil and picturesque view, perfect for relaxation.
Every detail of this project was carefully planned and executed to ensure the highest level of craftsmanship and client satisfaction. Homeowner Services of Michigan is proud to deliver a first-floor master suite that exceeds expectations, combining practicality with elegance for an unparalleled living experience.
