Concept visualization for a narrow Mediterranean courtyard organized around one clear circulation route. Dining sits close to the doors, the tiered fountain is offset from movement, the curved fire lounge is contained at one end, and layered planting softens the walls. Final fire and water features require local verification of clearances, fuel, drainage, waterproofing, electrical safety, maintenance access and manufacturer instructions. Planning a yard? Shots of our iconic shed "Hanssel or Gretel". A play on words from the famous story, due to the families last name and this being a his or hers (#heshed #sheshed or #theyshed), but not a play on function. This dynamic homeowner crew uses the shed for their private offices, alongside e-learning, meeting, relaxing and to unwind. This 10'x10' are requires no permit and can be completed in less that 3 days (interior excluded). The exterior space is approximately 40'x40', still required no permitting and was done in conjunction with a landscape designer. Bringing the indoor to the outdoor for all to enjoy, or close the french doors and escape to zen! To see the video, go to: https://youtu.be/zMo01-SpaTs

Capped by a picturesque double chimney and distinguished by its distinctive roof lines and patterned brick, stone and siding, Rookwood draws inspiration from Tudor and Shingle styles, two of the world’s most enduring architectural forms. Popular from about 1890 through 1940, Tudor is characterized by steeply pitched roofs, massive chimneys, tall narrow casement windows and decorative half-timbering. Shingle’s hallmarks include shingled walls, an asymmetrical façade, intersecting cross gables and extensive porches. A masterpiece of wood and stone, there is nothing ordinary about Rookwood, which combines the best of both worlds.
Once inside the foyer, the 3,500-square foot main level opens with a 27-foot central living room with natural fireplace. Nearby is a large kitchen featuring an extended island, hearth room and butler’s pantry with an adjacent formal dining space near the front of the house. Also featured is a sun room and spacious study, both perfect for relaxing, as well as two nearby garages that add up to almost 1,500 square foot of space. A large master suite with bath and walk-in closet which dominates the 2,700-square foot second level which also includes three additional family bedrooms, a convenient laundry and a flexible 580-square-foot bonus space. Downstairs, the lower level boasts approximately 1,000 more square feet of finished space, including a recreation room, guest suite and additional storage.

The client’s brief was to create a space reminiscent of their beloved downtown Chicago industrial loft, in a rural farm setting, while incorporating their unique collection of vintage and architectural salvage. The result is a custom designed space that blends life on the farm with an industrial sensibility.
The new house is located on approximately the same footprint as the original farm house on the property. Barely visible from the road due to the protection of conifer trees and a long driveway, the house sits on the edge of a field with views of the neighbouring 60 acre farm and creek that runs along the length of the property.
The main level open living space is conceived as a transparent social hub for viewing the landscape. Large sliding glass doors create strong visual connections with an adjacent barn on one end and a mature black walnut tree on the other.
The house is situated to optimize views, while at the same time protecting occupants from blazing summer sun and stiff winter winds. The wall to wall sliding doors on the south side of the main living space provide expansive views to the creek, and allow for breezes to flow throughout. The wrap around aluminum louvered sun shade tempers the sun.
The subdued exterior material palette is defined by horizontal wood siding, standing seam metal roofing and large format polished concrete blocks.
The interiors were driven by the owners’ desire to have a home that would properly feature their unique vintage collection, and yet have a modern open layout. Polished concrete floors and steel beams on the main level set the industrial tone and are paired with a stainless steel island counter top, backsplash and industrial range hood in the kitchen. An old drinking fountain is built-in to the mudroom millwork, carefully restored bi-parting doors frame the library entrance, and a vibrant antique stained glass panel is set into the foyer wall allowing diffused coloured light to spill into the hallway. Upstairs, refurbished claw foot tubs are situated to view the landscape.
The double height library with mezzanine serves as a prominent feature and quiet retreat for the residents. The white oak millwork exquisitely displays the homeowners’ vast collection of books and manuscripts. The material palette is complemented by steel counter tops, stainless steel ladder hardware and matte black metal mezzanine guards. The stairs carry the same language, with white oak open risers and stainless steel woven wire mesh panels set into a matte black steel frame.
The overall effect is a truly sublime blend of an industrial modern aesthetic punctuated by personal elements of the owners’ storied life.

Custom wall beds are versatile in design and take up very little space when closed, approximately 16” deep. These wall beds come in many sizes from a smaller single size up to a king size. Murphy Beds are an easy way to accommodate overnight guests by folding them down from the wall and then folding them up to save space in your house. You’d be surprised at all the places you could fold away a bed: a home office, a den, a play room, sewing/craft room, family room, living room or even in a small bedroom to double sleeping space.

Close-up of Trex Transcends used to build the steps and concrete coloring/pattern.
We demolished the existing rear deck, installed Trex landing and steps, stamped concrete patio, and landscaping. A Trex staircase was constructed using Trex Transcends, Spiced Rum color. A privacy lattice and fence was constructed from cedar and stained with the color stain selected by the client. We then installed approximately 445 square feet of concrete for a patio and stamped it to resemble the color variation of the three samples of stone veneer left at the residence. The blended stamp pattern is a "skin" designed to resemble the natural look of stone. Additional work included repairing and turf/grass damage resulting from the construction on site (may be seen in photographs as they were taken before new grass had grown), and select landscaping improvements around the patio.

This extreme kitchen renovation involved removing many walls to create the open floorplan concept. The old laundry room was walled in approximately where the custom table sits now. A 12' custom patio door was added in place of a 6' window! Cabinetry was designed to precisely fit in this space using lots of drawer banks using no fillers. Shallow storage was built in to the right of the frig. and a 1200cfm hood vented through the roof was meticulously integrated above the slide in range. The laundry room is now hidden by a custom sliding barn door with soft close hardware. All this was done reusing the existing hardwood floors, patching in with new where required!

Klise was fortunate to be a part of this unique renovation project, creating custom wire grillework for a Post Office Counterline, originally from the Steffenville, MO. post office. This beautiful example of 19th Century wood and metal craftsmanship is now housed in the Michael W. Schragg Post Office Museum in Marshall, Michigan. Klise created a unique double crimp ¼” flat wire grille to closely approximate some of the missing original metalwork.
