Our clients, Erica + Luca, are a power couple each running their own businesses, and for the past six years have also been social parents raising two boys. Their home sits hillside, adjacent to a green space where they have beautiful views, but limited access to enjoy the outdoors. Introspecs created an interior space plan which opens the main level rooms to one another, to both increase visual sight lines + allow separate activities to take place simultaneously. Our goal was to maintain a family-focused house with a large in-kitchen eating island + tons of pantry storage while still honoring adult cocktail hour + entertaining friends. We translated their edgy Euro taste into the finishes which beautifully dresses up the functional layout + resonates with their lifestyle.

What comes to mind when you envision the perfect multi-faceted living spaces? Is it an expansive amount of counter space at which to cook, work, or entertain freely? Abundant and practical cabinet organization to keep clutter at bay and the space looking beautiful? Or perhaps the answer is all of the above, along with a cosy spot to retreat after the long day is complete. The project we are sharing with you here has each of these elements in spades: spaces that combine beauty with function, promote comfort and relaxation, and make time at home enjoyable for this active family of three. Our main focus was to remodel the kitchen, where we hoped to create a functional layout for everyday use. Our clients also hoped to incorporate a home office right into the kitchen itself. However, the clients realized that renovation the kitchen alone wouldn’t create the full transformation they were looking for. Kitchens interact intimately with their adjacent spaces, especially family rooms, and we were determined to elevate their daily living experience from top to bottom. We redesigned the kitchen and living area to increase work surfaces and storage solutions, create comfortable and luxurious spaces to unwind, and update the overall aesthetic to fit their more modern, collected taste. Inspired by a lighthouse from needlework our client crafted, we decided to go with a low peninsula gas fireplace that functions as a beautiful room divider, acts as an island when entertaining and is transparent on 3 sides to allow light to filter in the space. A large sectional and coffee table opposite custom millwork increases seating and storage allowing this space to be used for the family and when guests visit. Paired with a collection of Canadiana prints all featuring water play off the white and blue colour scheme with touches of plants everywhere.

We were able to keep the traditional roots of this cabin while also offering it a major update. By accentuating its untraditional floor plan with a mix of modern furnishings, we increased the home's functionality and created an exciting but trendy aesthetic. A back-to-back sofa arrangement used the space better, and custom wool rugs are durable and beautiful. It’s a traditional design that looks decades younger. From dark and dreary to light and bright! ? These clients loved the custom home that they built almost a decade ago but were growing tired of their interior and wanted to make a change. Their vision was to lighten, brighten and modernize the finishes and designs in the home they had originally built, so they turned to the OakWood Team for expert advice. There are a lot of things we love about this updated kitchen design, but one of our favourite details has to be the island countertop which features a combination of quartz and a custom end grain black walnut butcherblock. End-grain construction is made from small rectangular blocks arranged so that the ends (with growth rings showing) are visible on the surface. The strongest and most expensive type of butcher block, it’s great for surfaces dedicated to cutting, because it camouflages knife marks and is gentle on blade edges (they slide into the grain rather than against it). Another goal for this space was to create a more open concept plan. There are no barriers between the eating area, kitchen, and living room, allowing for better communication, ease of movement, and increased lighting. This idea of transparency is also seen in the open shelving and the glass cabinetry uppers. Although very subtle, these glass details help complement the look and feel of this space. The end result is a completely redesigned space that any homeowner would be proud of.

Situated on a lovely island on Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains of New York is this beautiful 1920s camp. The homeowner did an extensive renovation, including a complete kitchen remodel. The wall between the kitchen and the back hall was removed to extend the kitchen, creating a coffee/drinks bar and an updating cabinetry layout to provide better storage. To keep with the Craftsman style of the house we used a Shaker door style with a slab drawer front in Red Birch. The warm red tone of the cabinetry topped with a soft white quartz counter top creating a welcoming vibe to the heart of this family camp. Interior features such as a pegged dishware storage, tray cabinet, LeMans swing out corner cabinet shelving, utensil organizer, deep drawers for pots & pans, and spice rack drawer increased the storage capabilities as well as the functionality of this kitchen.

We removed an old bay window and replaced it with a new 7' full lite door in between two side lites. This not only serves as a door to the outdoor patio, but it helps increase the natural light that is able to enter the space. Photography Credit: Mike Irby

Upgrades to this contemporary west coast home bring simplicity, light and improved movement. Stairs were reconfigured and opened with glass, wood and steel – giving visibility from the entrance through to the living spaces, where windows openings were enlarged to capture the ocean and islands beyond. Custom millwork placed in the kitchen increased function and aesthetic, and created a workspace situated towards the expansive west coast view. All finishes were upgraded and spaces opened considerably. Curtis and Peggy had been thinking of a kitchen remodel for quite some time, but they knew their house would have a unique set of challenges. Their older Victorian house was built in 1891. The kitchen cabinetry was original, and they wanted to keep the authenticity of their period home while adding modern comforts that would improve their quality of life. A friend recommended Advance Design Studio for their exceptional experience and quality of work. After meeting with designer Michelle Lecinski at Advance Design, they were confident they could partner with Advance to accomplish the unique kitchen renovation they’d been talking about for years. “We wanted to do the kitchen for a long, long time,” Curtis said. “(We asked ourselves) what are we actually going to do? How are we going to do this? And who are we going to find to do exactly what we want?” The goal for the project was to keep the home renovation and new kitchen feeling authentic to the time in which it was built. They desperately wanted the modern comforts that come with a larger refrigerator and the dishwasher that they never had! The old home was also a bit drafty so adding a fireplace, wall insulation and new windows became a priority. They very much wanted to create a comfortable hearth room adjacent to the kitchen, complete with old world brick. The original cabinetry had to go to make way for beautiful new kitchen cabinetry that appears as if it was a hundred years old, but with all the benefits of cutting-edge storage, self-closing drawers, and a brand-new look. “We just wanted to keep it old looking, but with some modern updates,” Peggy said. Dura Supreme Highland Cabinets with a Heritage Old World Painted Finish replaced the original 1891 cabinets. The hand-applied careful rubbed-off detailing makes these exquisite cabinets look as if they came from a far-gone era. Despite the small size of the kitchen, Peggy, Curtis and Michelle utilized every inch with custom cabinet sizes to increase storage capacity. The custom cabinets allowed for the addition of a 24” Fisher Paykel dishwasher with a concealing Dura Supreme door panel. Michelle was also able to work into the new design a larger 30” Fisher Paykel French refrigerator. “We made every ¼ inch count in this small space,” designer Michelle said. “Having the ability to custom size the cabinetry was the only way to achieve this.” “The kitchen essentially was designed around the Heartland Vintage range and oven,” says Michelle. A classic appliance that combines nostalgic beauty and craftsmanship for modern cooking, with nickel plated trim and elegantly shaped handles and legs; the not to miss range is a striking focal point of the entire room and an engaging conversation piece. Granite countertops in Kodiak Satin with subtle veining kept with the old-world style. The delicate porcelain La Vie Crackle Sonoma tile kitchen backsplash compliments the home’s style perfectly. A handcrafted passthrough designed to show off Peggy’s fine china was custom built by project carpenters Justin Davis and Jeff Dallain to physically and visually open the space. Additional storage was created in the custom panty room with Latte Edinburg cabinets, hand-made weathered wood shelving with authentic black iron brackets, and an intricate tin copper ceiling. Peggy and Curtis loved the idea of adding a Vermont stove to make the hearth-room not only functional, but a truly beckoning place to be. A stunning Bordeaux red Vermont Castings Stove with crisp black ventilation was chosen and combined with the authentic reclaimed Chicago brick wall. Advance’s talented carpenters custom-built elegant weathered shelves to house family memorabilia, installed carefully chosen barn sconces, and made the hearth room an inviting place to relax with a cup of coffee and a good book. “Peggy and Curtis’ project was so much fun to work on. Creating a space that looks and feels like it always belonged in this beautiful old Victorian home is a designer’s dream. To see the delight in their faces when they saw the design details coming together truly made it worth the time and effort that went into making the very compact kitchen space work”, said Michelle. “The result is an amazing custom kitchen, packed with functionality in every inch, nook and cranny!” exclaims Michelle. The renovation didn’t end with the kitchen. New Pella windows were added to help lessen the drafts. The removal of the original windows and trim necessitated the re-creation of hand-made corbels and trim details no longer available today. The talented carpenter team came to the rescue, crafting new pieces and masterfully finishing them as if they were always there. New custom gutters were formed and installed with a front entry rework necessary to accommodate the changes. The whole house functions better, but it still feels like the original 1891 home. “From start to finish it’s just a much better space than we used to have,” Peggy said. “Jeff and Justin were amazing.” Curtis added; “We were lucky to find Advance Design, because they really came through for us. I loved that they had everything in house, anything you needed to have done, they could do it”.

Jule Lucero recreated these kitchen cabinets to take advantage of the high, flat ceiling. She added built-up crown molding to create balance, elegance and an architectural statement. Glass front cabinet doors were added, as were open shelves, to strategically add visual depth. Seeded, bubble glass was used to create blurred privacy for flexible storage use. The cabinets were stripped (originally a stained dark mahogany), painted a crisp, warm white to offset the custom oak flooring, The island was increased with a new granite top, and custom recess with new corbels, for casual coffee, or dining.

The Fish Lake Armoire project updates this bedroom with new carpet, trim, doors, lighting, and a wood beam for the vaulted ceiling. A custom armoire replaces the original coffee bar, adding both style and increased functionality. New hardwood flooring and a sleek, modern railing transform the hallway and stairs, giving this space a refreshed look.

An interior design refresh was exactly what this Toronto home needed! We wanted this client’s living room to have an updated look with some major wow-factor and increased function! Our interior design worked around the beautiful abstract art by pulling out those blue & gold tones in the pillows, accent chairs, and shelving display. Nesting tables are a great use of space and perfect when entertaining to extend the table out when you need it. Newly installed floating shelves also offer a stylish solution for display that doesn’t take up too much space and accommodates great use for a book display. In an older home in Great Neck, we opened up a wall between the small kitchen and a storage room and eliminated a powder room to enlarge the kitchen/dining concept. To enlarge the kitchen and allow backyard views, we flipped the kitchen to the back of the house, found a space to move the powder room and eliminated the small room. The client chose an Italian industrial look cement textured door style. We brightened the look with high gloss white upper cabinets. Two new attractive large windows let in natural light and gave them views of their yard. They wanted a quartz counter that looked like marble. Since quartz doesn’t offer this style, we chose a marble look porcelain which is stunning! Additional cabinetry, pantry and island increased their storage. Two sinks and additional counter space made it functional for two. The work flow of the kitchen was easy and open. All materials are easy to clean. The eat-in kitchen maximized the dining away ambiance. To satisfy their culinary desires, we added a spice drawer and cabinet. The coffee bar has a drawer for easy access. The island faucet includes sparkling water. Since they love grilled food all year round, we recommended a range top with a grill and high-powered vented hood. The full-size wine fridge makes it easy to store wine conveniently. The built-in steam oven allowed them to cook small meals with high efficiency.
