Our goal for these clients — a young couple who recently relocated to the Pittsburgh-area from Phoenix, AZ — was to bring a touch of the sunny Sonoran into their new home. This subdued, sun-bleached palette feels both vibrant and earthy. A dramatic, shifting landscape that comes alive with the day’s changing light. Large format terrazzo tiles ground the space with muted, dusty green, ochre and amber. A nod to the tough skins of cacti, agave, and creosote bushes. A young chef wanted this kitchen to be modern, fully functional, innovative and cool. A little industrial meets a lot contemporary, meets warm wood and cold quartz. As one wall came down, we did our best to create an island, but with the narrow space, it truly made no sense. So to save as much counter space as we could, yet be able to seat as many people as possible, we created a walnut topped peninsula with a waterfall drop leaf. The leaf lifts up, to reveal a waterfall that matches the rest of the kitchen. It was one of the most difficult things we have ever done, as the leaf and counter are solid walnut and very heavy. A hidden leg helps to bear the weight when the leaf is opened up. This specially designed shelf system allows ease of access in underutilized blind corners. The dual action articulation system with soft close mechanism ensures a smooth open and close. The client selected Black Vermont granite countertops with an ogee edge to contrast the Linen White painted cabinetry. The door to the screen porch was replaced with a Marvin Exterior Door with a raised panel at the bottom of the 3⁄4 glass door. Marvin Windows replaced the other windows in the space increasing the energy efficiency and value of the home. To establish the breakfast nook, a bench with drawers and an upholstered seat was built into the bay area of the room. Custom bookshelves were built with open shelves, cabinet doors, and drawers on either side of the fireplace. A new stone hearth and fireplace surround were installed. Above the existing mantel we built a recessed space for the flat screen television hiding all wiring inside the walls for a completely clean look. The space that was once a desk was transformed into a bar area. The glass shelves and glass cabinet front liquor cabinet stand out. But this bar area has hidden secrets. Tucked beneath the black granite is a Thermador under-counter double drawer refrigerator with matching wood front panels. They blend in perfectly with the cabinets. A wireless printer is easily accessed on a slide out drawer. Plus, what looks like merely wooden panels on the wall are concealing recessed storage for more bottles and glasses! Overhead recessed lighting and speaker system provide illumination and entertainment through the entire space. This luxury home had original, solid oak flooring through most of the first floor which the homeowner obviously wanted to keep but were in desperate need of repair and refinishing. Our master craftsmen wove in new wood flooring to match the old where needed, particularly where walls had been changed and where the floor was damaged. We sanded the floors, smoothing away years of wear and tear. The entire wood floor was then uniformly stained, making it impossible to differentiate where any repairs were made. This large open master bathroom had plenty of room to install a large full walk-in shower with a slope shower entrance, floor to ceiling tile, a rain glass shower panel, a large tile shower bench, and multiple shower heads. The Process consisted of: > Removing all surround tile, wood window trim, fixtures, and a large tub. > Remove and replace hot/cold mixer shower valve and add a second mix valve and shower head, > Enlarged the area to a full walk in shower. Constructed a custom shower pan with a slope entrance. > Installed a sturdy Grab Rail > Constructed and tiled two 14" high by 16" wide niches in side walls for soap/shampoo, and a rear bench for bench. > Tile: Install 12"x14" tile on the, walls from floor to ceiling. Installed mosaic tile on the shower floor, and niches. Tile edges and transitions have Schluter Polished chrome edging. > Installed an 80" x 80" Rain glass panel at the front of the shower.

This kitchen was designed for cooking, baking, and candy making. We tiled the main work triangle flooring for durability and easy cleaning. The client can cook and bake all day using the new 48” pro range and 36” induction cooktop. Countertop space is not lacking in this two island design. Taj Mahal quartzite countertops are beautiful and great for prepping dough or a cold surface for rolling candy. Fieldstone Cabinetry in walnut with a natural finish sprinkled with some macadamia painted finish gives the kitchen an elegant home feel mixed with all the professional appliances. The client’s goal for this makeover was to create a clean style with a contemporary vibe in her cold empty bedroom. The client’s main focus for the design was to block the morning sun that woke her up long before she wanted to begin her day. Problem(s) addressed: The room was void of furnishings, bedding and accessories. The décor consisted of a mattress, box spring, jewelry chest and an old comforter, and therefore had no inspirational piece from which to begin the design. We were literally starting from scratch. As for the morning sun dilemma, I was excited to come up with a better solution to the sun challenge than her temporary solution of stacking towels in the arch window. Solution provided: Furnishings were the first priority. Rich espresso-stained contemporary dresser, gentleman’s chest and nightstands began the design. Next, a leopard print upholstered chaise was selected to sit in front of the double arched window providing a place to read, work on a laptop, and listen to music or just lounge. Two faux leather ottomans were selected to perch at the end of the bed. Custom bedding and color scheme was next on the list. The client had requested a restful color palette, which fell into place when we found the perfect heather-gray, gold and cream hued bed ensemble. With the bedding selected, a coordinating wall paint and gold velvet fabric was chosen for the upholstered headboard. To solve the clients early morning wake up call, traversing draperies that are installed above the window arch were designed to shut out the morning sun. The inverted French pleat draperies, with their color block design, enhance the room’s clean contemporary style. Brushed silver hardware with cracked crystal finials coordinated the furniture hardware and added a touch of sophistication. Finally, a combination of elegant lighting, mixed media art, an area rug and accessories finish the room’s contemporary design.

This project was all about adding life and colour to a new build home. Our clients love things colourful, they were feeling drained and uninspired by the builders white walls and grey carpets. Taking inspiration from some of their artwork, we added a deep reddish pink to the walls, ceiling and woodwork, a custom mix by Little Greene, to add life to the pool room which was flat, cold and unwelcoming. In addition to the paint we added drinks shelves, a new cue rack and an upholstered pelmet with integrated uplighting to light the exposed beams and add some drama to the space. The lounge originally had an inglenook fireplace and felt a little dated, so we added a media wall with built-in 3-sided fire. Taking inspiration from the existing Little Green Ormond Street wallpaper, we used pinks, oranges and blues to tie the room together. The open plan space, light and bright, painted in Portland Stone, needed a casual but compact daytime seating area. We again used colour inspiration from our clients collection of artwork for the colour scheme and designed a fully bespoke curved sofa to soften the angular shape of the room. We painted the hallway in Putti, a dark green/grey to add depth and interest when you enter the house. Using a crucial trading stripy stair carpet to add pops of colours from the adjoining rooms to tie it all together.

A rustic bath retreat was created in this Orland Park home by Adam Hartig AKBD to replace a poorly organized / dark room with cold finishes and low quality materials. Rounding the corner to the outside wall, the base cabinetry was built to a narrower depth, providing additional space for the island, as well as easier access to the new larger pass-thru window which serves the screen porch. The client selected Black Vermont granite countertops with an ogee edge to contrast the Linen White painted cabinetry. The door to the screen porch was replaced with a Marvin Exterior Door with a raised panel at the bottom of the 3⁄4 glass door. Marvin Windows replaced the other windows in the space increasing the energy efficiency and value of the home. To establish the breakfast nook, a bench with drawers and an upholstered seat was built into the bay area of the room. Custom bookshelves were built with open shelves, cabinet doors, and drawers on either side of the fireplace. A new stone hearth and fireplace surround were installed. Above the existing mantel we built a recessed space for the flat screen television hiding all wiring inside the walls for a completely clean look. The space that was once a desk was transformed into a bar area. The glass shelves and glass cabinet front liquor cabinet stand out. But this bar area has hidden secrets. Tucked beneath the black granite is a Thermador under-counter double drawer refrigerator with matching wood front panels. They blend in perfectly with the cabinets. A wireless printer is easily accessed on a slide out drawer. Plus, what looks like merely wooden panels on the wall are concealing recessed storage for more bottles and glasses! Overhead recessed lighting and speaker system provide illumination and entertainment through the entire space. This luxury home had original, solid oak flooring through most of the first floor which the homeowner obviously wanted to keep but were in desperate need of repair and refinishing. Our master craftsmen wove in new wood flooring to match the old where needed, particularly where walls had been changed and where the floor was damaged. We sanded the floors, smoothing away years of wear and tear. The entire wood floor was then uniformly stained, making it impossible to differentiate where any repairs were made.
