Bilotta Senior Designer, Thomas Vecchio, and Patrick J. Hamilton of Patrick James Hamilton Designs, partnered on this Manhattan upper east side kitchen renovation. This nondescript ‘60’s co-op and galley kitchen were reimagined into a pre-war era gem by adding architectural details: paneling, coffers, and moldings. Widening the opening created an open vista. Upper panes of glass on the Bilotta Collection wall cabinets echo the apartment’s transoms and unite the two sections that are interrupted by the paneled structural column. To compensate for the shorter wall, storage is optimized with plentiful pullouts, dividers, and specialized organizers. The “dead end” under the window was eliminated by continuing cabinetry and countertop materials around the room. Countertop wall cabinets create a hutch in full view of the dining room. With dark gray paint, corner posts and furniture base molding, the peninsula reads like an island and bridges the two areas. Quartz countertops sport “lightning bolt” veins for pattern. Sophisticated on- trend brushed brass was employed on the cabinet pulls and knobs, faucet, sconces, and pendants. A gamechanger was extending the footprint of the kitchen into the hallway with two tall cabinets. One is allocated for cleaning supplies, bulk items, recycling, and the vacuum. The other conceals a built-in wine rack; glassware and bar items; a docking drawer for charging devices; and a Penda-flex rack for files. An absolutely stunning metamorphosis. The BPI team designed and installed this space in the spring of 2014. The space includes an outdoor dining area with a step down into an outdoor room covered by a cedar pergola with a gas fire feature below. The space was designed on a 45degree angle to play off of the homes architecture and maximize useable green space for the kids. The addition of the levels in the space help to create unique spaces within the space as well as take advantage of the natural terrain of the site. This creative use of materials and textures really added amazing character to the space proving that a well thought out design can compensate for lack of size

This house is ideally located in the woods, backing up to the Cambridge reservoir in Waltham. But the beautiful views and secluded outdoor spaces could not compensate for the 1970’s interiors, particularly the master bathroom and kitchen, which lacked distinction and needed to be updated. The new cabinets and locally quarried stone counters modernized and greatly enhanced the kitchen without the expense of relocating the appliances or the sink.

By not having any upper cabinets, the space feels less crowded and bigger, as if it belongs to a larger home. The few cabinets in the kitchen are efficiently utilized, but we had to compensate for storage elsewhere. We have designed a custom hutch for Michelle that serves multiple purposes. It not only provides storage for overstock from the kitchen but also acts as a hub for her electronics, paperwork, printer, filing drawer, and craft supplies. The kitchen is influenced by Scandinavian design, featuring playful shades of pink on the walls, the floating shelf, and the vintage spice cubby (coral). Timeless black and white accents throughout the space complement the pink accents in a subtle way.
