Oakland, CA: Addition and remodel to a rustic ranch home. The existing house had lovely woodwork but was dark and enclosed. The house borders on a regional park and our clients wanted to open up the space to the expansive yard, to allow views, bring in light, and modernize the spaces. New wide exterior accordion doors, with a thin screen that pulls across the opening, connect inside to outside. We retained the existing exposed redwood rafters, and repeated the pattern in the new spaces, while adding lighter materials to brighten the spaces. We positioned exterior doors for views through the whole house. Ceilings were raised and doorways repositioned to make a complicated and closed-in layout simpler and more coherent.

This Spring Valley yard was an incredibly complicated build. With over 5 stories of elevation change in the yard from the front to the back of the property, creating a sense of consistency and integration was a challenge. The expansive yard demanded a lot of thought be put into the cohesive design elements to make one's area flow with ease from one place to the next. In August we posted pics of a Grand Vista Insulated Sunroom under construction by a homeowner near Oakville, Ontario. He also chose Craft-Bilt Aluminum Railing and Decking. This kind of project is not for the faint of heart, but he has done a fantastic job. There were several complications, dealing with the permit process, the fire rated wall on the left, to the uneven gable design, but he persevered. The simple goals for the home are to create a small interior 3 bedroom 2 bath house, efficient in space and low on maintenance, while maximizing the exterior spaces. The more complicated goals include designing a house that can be open when occupied and closed when not as it is 300’ from the Gulf of Mexico and must be secure from storms. One of the biggest challenges of this remodel was fitting the client’s massive 15’ x 9’ oil painting into a room with a low ceiling and west wall that angled sharply downwards, and designing lighting which could fit into the tight space allowed. Further complicating matters were the strict code restrictions on building height. The roof-line was raised and the wall elevated within very tight guidelines. Numerous calculations and research went into specifying and installing the light fixtures, and ultimately there was only a 1” tolerance between the light fixture and ceiling for it to adequately light the painting.
