The finished space incorporates traditional millwork matching the lower level of the home, a custom built-in bookshelf, new white doors, and pre-finished white oak hardwood floors in a rich Licorice stain. The dark floors and oil-bronze accents throughout the space really anchors the room and completes an overall bright color pallet with high contrast. In the new bathroom, a cement tile floor was selected to tie in the homeowner’s classy flair. Switching the finishes to polished brass inside the bathroom really brings a lux and regal feel to the space. Paired with traditional subway tile, white vanity, refurbished vintage medicine cabinet, and neutral walls, the new bathroom is elegant, yet understated. A property that complied with these conditions was found on the Market in Deinze, and JUMA architects were subsequently asked to design a new interior for the store. The property in question is very deep and narrow with little natural light entry. JUMA set to work despite these constraints in an attempt to transform these challenges into qualities. The architects positioned the sales counter right behind the shop window, so as to make optimum use of the available natural light. This also makes store activities visible from the outside, adding an extra element of attraction. At the narrowest section of the store, a large wall mirror was put in to visually double the space. The wall onto which the eyeglasses are displayed is located opposite the mirror and is literally the eye catcher in the store. A wooden lattice makes for an interesting play of diagonal lines behind which the glasses are presented. This unique concept animates the entire store without detracting from the fact that the glasses should remain the main focal point in the store. The workshop is located in the back, separated from the store by a wall in smoked grey glass. In this way, the optician can keep an eye on the store at all times. The colour palette is predominantly white, to keep the interior as light as possible. As a counterpoint, warm wood accents are added. This 1,000 square foot backyard residence was designed to comply with the requirements of Seattle’s Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU) program, and can be permitted on most residential properties as a secondary residence, office or rental unit. The overall form is reminiscent of a traditional gable roofed house allowing the DADU to fit in well in suburban neighborhoods, while the specific design, material expression and openness are decidedly more modern. Designed with flexibility in mind, a lofted space upstairs overlooks the double height main living space below and both have ample access to natural daylight and views provided by the large glazed wall and skylights above. The main living space enjoys an open kitchen, and a large linear gas fireplace and opens onto a private patio/ entry area with large double sliding patio doors. The standing seam corten steel roofing and siding as well as the brick chimney were selected for maximum durability and for their natural beauty and low-maintenance characteristics. The gabled roof comes pre-wired for photovoltaic panels, giving the option to make this DADU net-zero.

The post in the middle made it difficult to use the garage on a daily basis so the post was removed to facilitate the use of the garage. The HOA wasn't too happy about the removal of the post as it was an essential part of the arches located right above the garage doors. You can clearly see how that would have been disruptive if the homeowner went with a regular wood door and not one custom designed and manufactured by Dynamic Garage Door. This garage door was specifically designed to address the HOA's concern about the center post removal and the effect it would have on the curb appeal of the home with the incomplete double arch look. So we addressed this by crafting the door with a false center post in the middle that was textured and painted the same color of the house to give off that illusion that the post is still there. Overall, it gives the home a complete finished appearance with two independent-looking doors and original post. The homeowner got the entire width of the opening to use at the push of a button so having a larger car won't be a problem anymore.
