Not every beautiful home begins with a demolition. This whole-home interior refresh is a master class in the art of layering — of honoring what a family has collected over a lifetime while introducing new pieces, textiles, and lighting that elevate the entire space to feel both fresh and deeply personal. The result is a home that looks thoroughly designed while never losing its warmth, character, or sense of belonging.
The Primary Bedroom
The primary bedroom was transformed into a serene, hotel-worthy retreat that still feels entirely personal. An upholstered linen headboard with a graceful arched profile and antique brass nailhead trim anchors the bed, dressed in a layered combination of crisp white quilted bedding with a soft grey coverlet. The pillow arrangement is carefully composed — pairs of embroidered blue botanical leaf pillows flank a center stack of navy lumbar pillows and a delicate cream linen lumbar with white floral embroidery — creating a look that is lush without being overdone.
Sheer floral curtains in soft taupe and cream hang from brushed brass rings on a brass rod, filtering gorgeous natural light while adding romantic, botanical softness to the room. Reeded/fluted cream nightstands with brass pulls provide a modern-classic foundation for matching brass and concrete column table lamps topped with clean white drum shades.
The most unexpected and show-stopping element of the room is the ceiling fixture: a sculptural petal-form bladeless ceiling fan finished in brushed antique gold. With its overlapping curved bronze blades arranged like flower petals around a concealed fan mechanism, it functions as a true work of art — beautifully solving the ceiling fan dilemma that so many bedrooms face. A classic wingback accent chair tucked into the corner with a cozy throw completes the room as a true sanctuary.
The Dining Room
The dining room balances old-world elegance with contemporary edge in a way that is genuinely rare. A breathtaking crystal cascade chandelier — layered with hundreds of chrome rings and crystal drops that cascade organically like frozen rain — hangs above a rich dark walnut dining table, immediately announcing that this room takes design seriously.
The dining chairs are custom-upholstered in a sophisticated blue-grey geometric dot fabric, each trimmed with rows of antique pewter nailhead detail along a high, shaped back — a level of craft that rewards close attention. A tone-on-tone botanical branch wallpaper in soft cream wraps the walls, providing quiet texture and warmth without competing with the room's other statement moments. A pale blue-grey wainscoting detail runs along the lower wall, adding architectural interest and a fresh coastal note.
An Asian-inspired black lacquer sideboard with brass medallion hardware lines the back wall, styled with silver candlesticks at varying heights. Floor-length grey flat-panel drapery panels hang on either side of a mirrored/glass bar cart topped with a sculptural floral arrangement in a white geometric vase — a vignette that is simultaneously refined and welcoming.
The Living Room
The living room is where the home's personality truly unfolds. An expansive gallery wall climbs the double-height wall above the leather sectional — a curated collection of over fifteen pieces that spans watercolor landscapes, Egyptian papyrus art, architectural sketches, folk art, silhouette portraits, black and white photography, and international travel pieces, all in a beautifully mixed variety of frames in gold, navy, dark wood, cranberry red, and natural wood tones. This is not a gallery wall assembled from a big-box store — it tells the story of a life fully and curiously lived.
The tan/camel leather sectional with rolled arms and nailhead trim is a warm, inviting anchor. A glass and silver-framed square coffee table sits on a neutral blue-grey area rug, styled with a sculptural white ceramic scalloped tray holding stacked books and a cream marble abstract knot sculpture. A sleek grey end table with a matte black sculptural floor lamp completes the seating area with modern restraint.
The Details
Throughout the home, the window treatments deserve special attention. Custom drapery panels feature a wide embroidered Greek key/geometric border trim in cream-on-taupe running the full leading edge — a couture detail that elevates every window into something architectural. Roman shades in a neutral woven stripe layer beneath, providing light control and texture depth.
Every vignette — from the coffee table styling to the dining sideboard to the bedroom nightstands — has been composed with care: sculptural objects, personal photographs, fresh botanicals, and stacked books coexist naturally, giving the home a lived-in elegance that feels genuinely achieved rather than manufactured.

Blending contemporary forms and lush plantings, this Garden maximizes the sensory experience of the materials and planting from inside and outside the home. The garden occupies an interior courtyard framed by four interior walls. The home, designed by Architect Cliff May was built in 1948 and the following year was featured in House Beautiful Magazine. The clients list of needs and desires was brief. They wanted a space that would complement the mid century modern home and provide visual interest from inside the home. Some form of water was also requested. They had a budget of $30,000. In order to stay within their budget the clients performed the demolition of the old garden. The designer’s intent was to create a garden that would possess a clear sculptural quality and would be as visually striking from inside the home as it would be from inside the courtyard. The strategy behind the design was to use hardscape materials characterized by simple geometric forms and a planting palette that would emphasize form over color, and then to arrange the materials to achieve an interpretation of modern aesthetic.
The views from inside the homes three main living rooms present the garden as a graphic composition of space, hardscape materials and planting. Inside the courtyard the edges are defined by stone and planting. The floor is composed of rectangular slabs of Teakwood flagstone with a counterpoint of Mexican beach pebbles set within the joints and around the edges. Concrete along the edges of the Teakwood pads reduces migration of the modified stone and sand base. The contrast of the Mexican beach pebbles accentuates the pattern of the flagstone. The outside perimeter of the pebbles is contained with low profile edging. An existing catch drain was utilized for storm water runoff. A concrete block pier set on a concrete footing is covered with black stucco and provides a perch for a custom made copper bowl that circulates water into the L shaped water feature. The water features subterranean basin is constructed of pressure treated wood with a custom box liner insert. Since the Teakwood flagstone was unavailable as coping for the water feature, the designer chose Shawnee Buff stone to complement the Teakwood flagstone. The subtle sound of water spilling from the copper bowl and the reflective qualities of the water help to create an atmosphere of relaxation. The planting is composed of shades of green with white flowers in order to accentuate the graphic design. ‘Justin Brouwer’ Boxwood, ‘Sum and Substance’ Hosta, white Anemones, black bamboo and ornamental grasses contrast dramatically with the clean lines of the hardscape elements. The black bamboo is set in 30” diameter concrete containers to control the vigorous plant from spreading.
The construction of the interior courtyard space challenged the building team. They set up baffles between the front door and the door to the courtyard as well as temporary protection over the floor to allow the process to move forward without too much disturbance to the client’s lives. All of the materials were shuffled through the temporary portal.
The clients love the space and recently said that “the design is so well thought out and simple that they would never get tired of it.” The designs sculptural quality compliments the modern feel of the home and creates a sublime yet dramatic view from within the house or within the courtyard. The clients plan to purchase two black Bertoia Diamond chairs with red cushions which should perfectly integrate with the space.

Modern living room enjoys city views from a space anchored by concrete fireplace surround. Low extra deep sectional faces grouping of leather swivels and large sculptural brass coffee table. Ceramic spheres in firebox are a wonderful alternative to glass pebbles. More images on our website: http://www.romero-obeji-interiordesign.com
