Residing on the shores of Canobie Lake, this custom-designed lakefront home represents a refined balance between architectural precision, site constraints, and the Client’s vision for everyday living and entertaining. Situated on a compact 0.62-acre sloped lot, the project presented a clear and demanding challenge: every room in the home was required to capture a meaningful view of the lake. RWH Architect addressed this challenge by carefully angling the home’s footprint to maximize the site’s 130 feet of waterfront while framing expansive views of sunsets and seasonal fireworks. The resulting form embraces the slope of the land, allowing the architecture to step naturally with the terrain while opening interior spaces toward the water. This strategic orientation ensured that no space felt disconnected from the lake, transforming the view into a defining architectural element rather than an afterthought. Designed with entertaining at its core, the home features open-concept living spaces that flow effortlessly toward the shoreline. Upper Valley Estate Curb Appeal – El Paso, Texas This curb appeal transformation was conceived as a deliberate sequence—an arrival experience where architecture, landscape, and lighting work together as one. Every element was designed to honor the home’s stone construction, turreted forms, and Old World character while responding precisely to the Upper Valley climate and lifestyle. By day, the experience is grounded and composed. Brick-edged concrete drives establish order and permanence, guiding movement through the property with clarity and intention. Natural stone walls and columns anchor the architecture, while layered gravel beds, drought-tolerant plantings, and manicured turf soften transitions and connect the home to its desert setting. Mature trees were preserved and carefully integrated, providing scale, shade, and a sense of continuity. As afternoon shifts toward sunset, the materials begin to speak differently. Stone warms, textures deepen, and sightlines subtly draw the eye toward the front entry. The landscape narrows the focus, creating a moment of pause before arrival—calm, quiet, and refined. At night, the design reveals its final layer. Low-voltage lighting is integrated with precision, washing stone surfaces, tracing architectural curves, and uplighting specimen trees to create depth without glare. The Atherton House is a family compound for a professional couple in the tech industry, and their two teenage children. After living in Singapore, then Hong Kong, and building homes there, they looked forward to continuing their search for a new place to start a life and set down roots. The site is located on Atherton Avenue on a flat, 1 acre lot. The neighboring lots are of a similar size, and are filled with mature planting and gardens. The brief on this site was to create a house that would comfortably accommodate the busy lives of each of the family members, as well as provide opportunities for wonder and awe. Views on the site are internal. Our goal was to create an indoor- outdoor home that embraced the benign California climate. The building was conceived as a classic “H” plan with two wings attached by a double height entertaining space. The “H” shape allows for alcoves of the yard to be embraced by the mass of the building, creating different types of exterior space. The two wings of the home provide some sense of enclosure and privacy along the side property lines. The south wing contains three bedroom suites at the second level, as well as laundry. At the first level there is a guest suite facing east, powder room and a Library facing west. The north wing is entirely given over to the Primary suite at the top level, including the main bedroom, dressing and bathroom. The bedroom opens out to a roof terrace to the west, overlooking a pool and courtyard below. At the ground floor, the north wing contains the family room, kitchen and dining room. The family room and dining room each have pocketing sliding glass doors that dissolve the boundary between inside and outside. Connecting the wings is a double high living space meant to be comfortable, delightful and awe-inspiring. A custom fabricated two story circular stair of steel and glass connects the upper level to the main level, and down to the basement “lounge” below. An acrylic and steel bridge begins near one end of the stair landing and flies 40 feet to the children’s bedroom wing. People going about their day moving through the stair and bridge become both observed and observer. The front (EAST) wall is the all important receiving place for guests and family alike. There the interplay between yin and yang, weathering steel and the mature olive tree, empower the entrance. Most other materials are white and pure. The mechanical systems are efficiently combined hydronic heating and cooling, with no forced air required.

Skema is a modular fireplace that likely arose from a doubt – the question of understanding what the right dimension would be to ensure that it is not only a good design but also a commercial success. This indefinable unknown became the leitmotif of the design project: a modular fireplace, an aggregable system of functional elements that can be developed from a minimum dimension - the firebox -, ad infinitum, in order to satisfy all the needs, and the available space, of the users. The functions in Skema are broken up and made free, so the independent: firebox, wood box, and open compartments can be combined as desired with personalisable and interchangeable solutions, creating a made-to-measure fireplace with right, left, or central orientation, with the wood box and open compartments on both sides. Constructed with precise proportions, the modules can also be assembled above the firebox and below for a vertical layout that is especially suitable for small spaces. A project conceived as a programme of units that can be developed horizontally or vertically with an array of finishes. Made entirely of steel, the exterior finish can be in Corten or in the black or white lacquer version.

The furniture solutions for the living room from the Raffaello collection transpire the lightness and compositional balance which constitute the cornerstones of the Italian Renaissance. A well-designed room with furnishings conceived to be elegant and never excessive. It is a classic room in the fullest and truest sense of the term – a place to never tire of and in which every day beauty is rediscovered.

Creature’s Plants + Coffee is a 12,000-square-foot ground-up retail café and greenhouse project in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, designed as a layered commercial environment that brings together plant retail, specialty coffee, and outdoor gathering within a single cohesive destination. The project is organized around a series of distinct yet connected zones, including a 50-foot greenhouse, specialty coffee bar, curated retail areas, indoor and outdoor plant displays, and generous exterior seating set within lush landscaping. Rather than functioning as a single-purpose storefront, the space was conceived as an immersive retail and hospitality environment where shopping, dining, and informal community use could coexist naturally. This project reflects experience in ground-up commercial design, retail architecture, café design, greenhouse environments, and outdoor-oriented planning. The result is a design-forward destination that balances circulation, planting, retail display, and food-and-beverage use while creating a warm, inviting setting for everyday use in Northeast Los Angeles.

This airy living room was conceived around the homeowners love of art and nature. A palette derived from sea and sand, natural elements were brought in both literally and figuratively. Warm wood and earthen accents are countered by sleek, modern accent chairs. The embroidered linen draperies draw the eye up and serve as a dramatic backdrop to the serene conversation area. Oversized mirrors transfer the ambient light throughout the room. The centerpiece of the room is a silk and copper aerial sculpture by artist Jan R. Carson (www.janrcarson.com) that is accented by a halogen spotlight. The lighting casts an ever-changing shadow, creating life and whimsy to the room. The homeowners have even been known to move the furniture back, spotlight the mobile, and use the room as a salsa dance floor! A reclaimed hand-carved door was repurposed as a coffee table. Modern elements such as the lucite "Ghost" chair, the Gus rocker, and impressionist original oil painting balance out the rustic elements of the room. Julie Austin Photography

With this facade refresh, we encountered one of our favorite challenges - how to make a big impact with a small footprint. Working with the existing elements (door, windows, plaster) we added a modern awning to shield the entry from the elements, created a raised front patio large enough to fit a small seating group, and created a subtle buffer from the street with low, board-formed concrete planters. Re-conceiving the color palette, the house now forms a striking backdrop to the soft planting in front.

The West Hollywood @editionhotels and Residences was conceived by @ianschrager and designed by @johnpawson by looking to the surrounding neighborhood and the larger city for inspiration: open spaces, sweeping views framed in modern, textural materials like concrete and teak. The influence of Pawson extends beyond the architecture and into the finishing details, he designed everything from the building's custom siding to the bronze FSB hardware on the doors. The Mildred Bungalow was remodeled and reconfigured to suit the client’s lifestyle. The floor plan was flipped -moving the bedroom to the front of the house so that the living area could open out onto the rear yard for indoor-outdoor entertaining. The material selections, doors and furniture plan were all conceived with the client’s two beloved dogs in mind -even the kitchen island was customized to accommodate their bowls.

Conceived of as a C-shaped house with a small private courtyard and a large private rear yard, this new house maximizes the floor area available to build on this smaller Palo Alto lot. An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) integrated into the main structure gave a floor area bonus. For now, it will be used for visiting relatives. One challenge of this design was keeping a low profile and proportional design while still meeting the FEMA flood plain requirement that the finished floor start about 3′ above grade. The new house has four bedrooms (including the attached ADU), a separate family room with a window seat, a music room, a prayer room, and a large living space that opens to the private small courtyard as well as a large covered patio at the rear. Mature trees around the perimeter of the lot were preserved, and new ones planted, for private indoor-outdoor living.
