The owner of this period cottage in the old market town of Tadcaster near Leeds, had what was once a beautiful Yorkshire stone floor in the kitchen. It has been a long time since it had been given a proper clean so over the years and with the Kitchen being a high traffic area the whole floor including the grout had darkened and he now wanted it refurbished in time for Christmas. I visited the property to assess what needed to be done and could see straight away that any protective sealer that was once on the floor had long since worn off. In fact, it was so consistently dirty with years of built-up grease and dirt I had to wonder if one had ever been applied. I explained what the floor needed was a really deep intensive clean and then a sealer applied to make it easy to keep clean. The problem with most tile and stone is its porosity and if left unprotected dirt easily becomes lodged into its pores making cleaning a struggle. To prove the difference that can be achieved and to allow me to work out a process on which I could base an accurate quote I ran a test clean on part of the kitchen floor. The test clean went very well, the difference was remarkable, and the cleaned section really stood out. Pleased with the potential of a clean floor they accepted my quote, and we pencilled a date in the diary. I returned on the appointed date and began by removing the kickboards from under the kitchen units to protect them from splashing. Next, I set about spaying the floor with a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean, this is a purpose made tile and grout cleaner that eats into the grease and dirt so it can be removed. This product works best if you leave it for ten minutes before scrubbing in using a heavy-duty machine fitted with a heavy-duty brush. The soil released from the floor was then extracted using a wet vacuum. The Pro-Clean did a good job on the grout however it was clear something stronger was required to really get the stone clean, so I stepped up a gear and applied Tile Doctor Remove and Go using the same process as before. This is a really good product for removing deeply ingrained grease and dirt. The final step of the cleaning process was to give the stone and acid wash using Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up to remove old grout haze and other mineral deposits; additionally, being an acidic product, it counters the alkaline cleaning products used earlier neutralising the pH level of the floor and leaving it ready for sealing. Before sealing I like to discuss the different products available and the finishes they can provide. In this case my clients’ main concerns were that they wanted the stone to look natural and easy to maintain going forward. With this in mind, Tile Doctor Seal & Go Extra was chosen, it’s a modern acrylic-based sealer that brings out the natural colours in the stone and gives a very slight smooth finish. The protection it provides will prevent dirt becoming ingrained int the pores of the stone and ensure the floor is easier to maintain. Several coats were applied, until we achieved the required finish. The deep cleaning process and fresh sealer transformed the stone floor bringing out its original beauty and my customer couldn’t believe the difference in the floor and was highly delighted. For aftercare I gave the client a bottle of Tile Doctor Neutral Cleaner, this product is pH neutral so it will clean the floor but won’t damage the sealer. Often people use household cleaners for cleaning tiled floors, but due to the strong chemicals they contain, they can do more harm than good by slowly stripping away the protective sealer and taking the floor back to square one. Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner is reasonably priced, and the concentrated formula means a small amount goes a long way so it’s well worth using. This was a pleasurable job for me as it was good to see the floor transform from dull and lifeless to clean and showing the natural colour and beauty of the York stone, and always lovely to have another satisfied client. Pairing their love of Mid-Century Modern design and collecting with the enjoyment they get out of entertaining at home, this client’s kitchen remodel in Linda Vista hit all the right notes. Set atop a hillside with sweeping views of the city below, the first priority in this remodel was to open up the kitchen space to take full advantage of the view and create a seamless transition between the kitchen, dining room, and outdoor living space. A primary wall was removed and a custom peninsula/bar area was created to house the client’s extensive collection of glassware and bar essentials on a sleek shelving unit suspended from the ceiling and wrapped around the base of the peninsula. Light wood cabinetry with a retro feel was selected and provided the perfect complement to the unique backsplash which extended the entire length of the kitchen, arranged to create a distinct ombre effect that concentrated behind the Wolf range. Subtle brass fixtures and pulls completed the look while panels on the built in refrigerator created a consistent flow to the cabinetry. Additionally, a frosted glass sliding door off of the kitchen disguises a dedicated laundry room full of custom finishes. Raised built-in cabinetry houses the washer and dryer to put everything at eye level, while custom sliding shelves that can be hidden when not in use lessen the need for bending and lifting heavy loads of laundry. Other features include built-in laundry sorter and extensive storage.

This stunning luxury gym interior with bespoke mirrored cabinetry and premium slatted wood wall panelling was designed and installed by us for our client’s prime residence in Guildford, Surrey. The vertical panels are constructed in a highly durable natural light oak with a contemporary Nordic look. The neutral colours and natural oak in this room promote a serene atmosphere to allow for focus, concentration and relaxation. Slatted wall panels for acoustics and aesthetics The narrow slats absorb sound and reduce echo and reverberation for a comfortable and pleasant environment. An acoustic black backing adds extra soundproofing. The sweeping curved shape of the bespoke slatted wood-clad doors are a special feature and soften the appearance of the cabinetry adding elegance to the environment. The discreet handles recessed into the edge of the doors maintain the sleek minimalist look. A practical satin matt clear finish enhances the grain and adds protection. Handcrafted bespoke storage The bespoke floor to ceiling fitted cabinetry features full-length safety mirrored doors with a silver finish. The mirrors provide visual feedback and enhance light and a feeling of spaciousness. Every millimetre of cabinet space has been tailored with cabinetry with storage features. These include deep pull-out drawers for heavy equipment; a custom space for golf clubs and bags; square cubby holes for trainer shoes, and rounded shelves in the curved section to organise small items. The interior of the cabinetry is lined with a hardwearing, easy to clean light grey textured laminate. The interior drawers and door backs are spray finished in Farrow and Ball Down Pipe, a stylish dark grey.

The simplicity of solids, emphasized by tall units doors and island bases with groove, does not contrast with the various translucent materials that introduce countless and rigorous reflections. A real laboratory where different materials and finishes are mixed with extreme knowledge: the right columns are model Lab matt glass Nero traffico finish, the left columns are model Bluna wood bilaminate Noce miele finish, while the island is model Bluna tech Alluminio brunito finish with the new Emme groove which gives a characteristic lightness to the 12 mm thick gres worktop Nero greco finish.

Kitchen Over 150K If you ever found yourself shopping for a new home, finding a model home, falling in love with this model home and immediately signing on the dotted line. Yet after a few months of moving into your new home you realize that the kitchen and the layout of main level will not work out for your lifestyle. The model home you fell in love with was furnished with beautiful furniture distracting you from concentrating on what is really important to you. This is what happened to this couple in Ashburn, VA, after purchasing their dream home. The kitchen lacked natural light, while its location was not ideal and was disrupting their daily routine. After a careful review of the kitchen design, a plan was formed to upgrade the kitchen. Their kitchen was moved to a location between the two-story family room and front dining room. To the left of the family room there was a breakfast eating area that was not serving any purpose. Our design incorporated the breakfast area placed along a couple feet from an adjacent pantry space to create this new dream kitchen. By knocking down a few bearing walls, we have placed the main sink area under large backside windows. Now the kitchen can look into their beautiful backyard. A major load bearing wall between the old breakfast room and adjacent two-story family was taken down and a big steel beam took the place of that, creating a large seamless connection between the new kitchen and the rest of the home. A large island was implemented with a prep sink, microwave, and with lots of seating space around it. Large scale professional appliances along with stunning mosaic backsplash tiles complement this amazing kitchen design. Double barn style door in front of the pantry area sets off this storage space tucked away from rest of the kitchen. All the old tile was removed and a matching wide plank distressed wood floor was installed to create a seamless connection to rest of the home. A matching butler pantry cabinet area just outside of dining room and a wine station/drink serving area between family room and main foyer were added to better utilize the multi-function needs of the family. It is all about colour. When designer Anna Scurfield and her husband Sergei Scurfield decided to renovate their own home they started at the Denca Showroom. When they saw the Red Bertazzoni range, all the design details began to fall into place. Anna was already inspired to do a grey palette for her home. However, grey is so tricky when done wrong it can be clinical or boring. The powerful pro range was what she was looking for in performance and red gave the drama and excitement needed to balance the quiet shades in grey. We picked up that red by simply having the large lift cabinets above have a matching Red finished interior. With the circular peek a boo windows it was just enough to accentuate the red without throwing it everywhere. The backsplash is made from travel photos in black and white. The urban scenes were laminated onto a tempered clear glass, for fire protection. The detail of the images again concentrates attention to the range wall as all other shapes in the room are pure geometry. The dark waterfall countertops wrap the cabinets just like the dark floor to ceiling gables frame the tall pantry units. The simplest of shapes – with one giant punch of colour balances and warms the design. The kitchen is a showstopper. The bravery to be bold was inspired from the beautiful lines and design of the Italian range.

Solution by Waterman Engineers Australia Waterman Engineers Australia was approached to design and deliver an integrated water treatment system with the capacity to meet the extreme salinity and challenging operational conditions. This solution would involve a multi-layered treatment process: Ultrafiltration (UF) was the first stage to remove the suspended solids and colloids in order to protect the downstream processes from fouling. RO was thus used to bring down the TDS considerably and provide a permeate stream suitable for re-use into the field’s operations. MEEs were installed for the RO concentrate treatment step, further decreasing the volume of brine and recovering more water for re-use. The system developed by Waterman Engineers Australia led to a significant reduction in scaling and corrosion problems, extended the life expectancy of the field’s infrastructure, and facilitated the re-injection of treated water that results in reduced reliance on freshwater resources.
