Our long-time clients wanted a bit of outdoor entertainment space at their Boston penthouse, and while there were some challenges due to location and footprint, we agreed to help. The views are amazing as this space overlooks the harbor and Boston’s bustling Seaport below. With Logan Airport just on the other side of the Boston Harbor, the arriving jets are a mesmerizing site as their lights line up in preparation to land. The entire space we had to work with is less than 10 feet wide and 45 feet long (think bowling-alley-lane dimensions), so we worked extremely hard to get as much programmable space as possible without forcing any of the areas. The gathering spots are delineated by granite and IPE wood floor tiles supported on a custom pedestal system designed to protect the rubber roof below. The gas grill and wine fridge are installed within a custom-built IPE cabinet topped by jet-mist granite countertops. This countertop extends to a slightly-raised bar area for the ultimate view beyond and terminates as a waterfall of granite meets the same jet-mist floor tiles… custom-cut and honed to match, of course. Moving along the length of the space, the floor transitions from granite to wood, and is framed by sculptural containers and plants. Low-voltage lighting warms the space and creates a striking display that harmonizes with the city lights below. Once again, the floor transitions, this time back to granite in the seating area consisting of two counter-height chairs. "This purposeful back-and-forth of the floor really helps define the space and our furniture choices create these niches that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.” - Russell The terrace concludes with a large trough planter filled with ornamental grasses in the summer months and a seasonal holiday arrangements throughout the winter. An ‘L’-shaped couch offers a spot for multiple guests to relax and take in the sounds of a custom sound system — all hidden and out of sight — which adds to the magical feel of this ultimate night spot.

Overall, the open floorplan IKEA kitchen is equipped with stainless steel appliances including a microwave, vent hood, and dishwasher. In addition, the long, open space (which connects directly to the living room) is enhanced by overhead pendant lighting and natural lighting coming in from both sides of the apartment. Since Elisia was so hands-on with her full-house remodel, she wanted to share a few pointers about the project. “My main piece of advice is to research, research, research! And you need to have a sense of [the style and function you want from your space],” she says. She concludes by pointing out her favorite part of her modern IKEA kitchen. “I love the amount of storage space we get for such a small kitchen. From a functional standpoint, we wanted an appliance garage [to house] our toaster oven, toaster and coffee maker. Tucked into the opposite end of the small kitchen and enhanced by natural light is the breakfast nook. “We have two small kids and needed space for them to sit and eat or play while we are cooking and cleaning,” she explains. Therefore the space features a bench with cushions and more storage underneath, again featuring the Semihandmade cabinetry, as well as an overhead pendant light from Crate & Barrel. Aja notes that there were no issues with the design and the process was virtually seamless. “We used IKEA’s measuring service to take initial measurements of the space and they did make an error which affected our ability to execute IKD’s design. However, our contractor was able to make a few cost-effective modifications, and we had to order some additional doors and panels from Semihandmade in order to complete the project,” she describes. In the end, Aja offers straightforward advice for others considering an IKEA kitchen. “I say go for it! We love our IKEA kitchen, and will always recommend to our friends to use a design service like IKD. It made the process so much smoother, faster, and gave us exactly what we wanted,” she concludes.

Jeffery and his family had very specific requests for this DIY kitchen project, such as an island; easy-to-clean surfaces and storage. “The IKEA SEKTION cabinets really filled those needs for us,” he says. “I always look for value and DIY options, and the reviews I read about IKEA cabinets along with IKEA’s 25-year warranty appealed to me. I also wanted lots of smart devices that would streamline work and I selected a touch faucet and a touch-control induction cooktop. Everything is designed to minimize mess and make cleaning easy,” he adds. The IKEA High Gloss White RINGHULT cabinetry – which Jeffery installed himself — provides ample storage space throughout the perimeter base cabinetry and makes clean up smoother. This gives his wife plenty of storage options for pots, pans and other cooking items and enhances the work triangle. The RINGHULT cabinetry also complements the warm walnut veneer upper cabinetry doors from Semihandmade and the white quartz countertops. Jeffrey concludes: “We were also undecided about a backsplash until the very end. I came across glass backsplashes and knew that was the way to go. I ordered tempered glass, then painted the reverse with special glass paint. I’m pretty sure that’s my wife’s favorite part.”

Living in a 100-year-old house definitely presented unique design issues. “Our major concern was what we would find behind the soffits and cabinets,” she says.“Early on, we found that much of our lath and plaster was heavily damaged and that the ceiling had been dropped around the soffits. So, we changed course from the planned facelift of the kitchen and instead took everything to the studs.” However, she also had to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic as well as wildfires that were raging in Oregon at the time. She explains: “These events led to major challenges in getting all of our IKEA cabinets and appliances here, between store closures due to air quality and shipping delays. However, all of the companies we worked with were great, it just took weeks longer to get things than we would have hoped.” Despite all this, Chelsea says it’s hard to pick just one favorite part of her kitchen. “We love the big open counter space that flows into the eat-in-bar and the wallpaper. I also love the accent wall with the wallpaper. It really brings movement into the space and helps bring a historic touch to the room,” she concludes. Cole & Son’s wallpaper and coved crown molding bring a historic touch to the space as well.

Amanda says her choice of IKEA cabinetry was both practical and purposeful. “By the time I reached the cabinet stage of the kitchen remodel process, I was already way over my [initial budget of $10,000]. After receiving a quote for over $10,000 just for my cabinets at Home Depot, I knew I had to explore other options. I saw that IKEA cabinets came highly recommended and had much better reviews than the cabinets I had planned on buying.” The painted blue-green DIY shaker-style cabinetry doors from Semihandmade are featured along the lower cabinetry and give a refreshing pop of color to the space. The design tool was driving me crazy when I tried to design the kitchen myself; but IKD took care of all of that, which was a huge time saver for me.”
