Elaine’s all-white IKEA kitchen is a stunning combination of IKEA RINGHULT cabinetry, IKEA GREVSTA stainless steel cabinetry for the massive kitchen island, along with a variety of high-end appliances. This creates a very minimalist, sleek look throughout the layout. “I chose IKEA cabinets because it appealed to my aesthetics and fit into our busy lifestyle,” she says. “I wanted an all-white kitchen that has a modern clean design but was still family-friendly and easy to maintain.” “I also liked being able to easily replace a shelf or a drawer if I needed to make a change or if there was a minor accident by an overactive child or clumsy adult. I can see that the cabinets are extremely high quality and can withstand a few dings from a busy family,” she adds. However, the project was not without its design challenges. He explains: “The kitchen went from an enclosed layout to completely open, so I lost many upper and lower cabinets. The sink was moved and is now in the island, and the loss of cabinet space needed to be made up with smarter storage and a more functional layout.” He adds: “My goal was to create the most functional space in the floor plan. Since I was cutting out two walls and creating an open layout between the kitchen, dining room and living room, knowing exactly what the space would render like was important to me.” And he relied on IKD to make sure that happened. “I wanted to use IKD to make sure I didn’t miss a hack or tool to help with my experience,” he says. We removed a storage space under the stairs leading to the upper floor and installed contemporary stair tread and cable handrail for an updated modern look. The first floor living space is now open and entertainer friendly with uninterrupted flow from inside to outside and is simply stunning.

Now as an experienced DIYer, Adam shares some important advice for other IKEA customers. “Remodeling your kitchen is hard under any circumstances. IKEA does present remodelers with an option for higher-end remodels that can be done by oneself, but it is not an easy road. There are plenty of tutorials online, but you will also run into situations that will not have a tutorial somewhere,” he says. To that end, he advises that as you go through the process, you will develop more confidence in how to manage these challenges. “Make sure you know what your limits are and know that once you start it can be impossible to stop with half a kitchen built. Take your time to investigate this project and make the best-informed decision for your home,” he adds. He concludes: “Installation was definitely challenging for a first-time installer, but it got easier as we progressed. I certainly could install another kitchen much faster right now!”

“After the IKEA boxes were installed, we were able to add the Ricabi custom doors and drawer fronts on our own,” she says. She continues: “The main challenge we faced was making sure we measured everything in the kitchen area correctly while the house was in the demo stage. There’s definitely a learning curve to putting the first few IKEA cabinets together but it’s much easier after that.” Andrea concludes with some advice for other IKEA kitchen remodelers. “You can have a custom-looking kitchen without the huge price tag. If you’re concerned that your kitchen is going to look like those in the IKEA showroom, consider a custom door company like Ricabi and an awesome design service like IKD. Constructing IKEA cabinets yourself will save money but be patient on the first few. It’s a lot smoother if you have a partner to help you.”

This kitchen had been remodeled by a previous owner who had installed a lower ceiling to hide new plumbing installed for the bathroom above; as well as the oak cabinets and appliances. This ceiling height made the space Closter phobic for the current husband who is tall. The oak cabinets made the room dark in spite of the 2 large windows. The home owners and I discussed the options for the space. The basic configuration was fine at the cooking end of the room, but storage was lacking and the 48” wide hood was oversized for the cooktop. The other end of the room had an oak table and chairs for casual dining in front of a nice window. The opposite wall had a desk with cabinet storage above used for fine china and serving pieces. The existing wood flooring was to remain. We concluded that the cabinets should be white to brighten up the space and that the ceiling should be raised as much as possible. We agreed on which base cabinets and wall cabinets should be replaced and that the remaining could be painted. We agreed that all the cabinets should receive new Shaker style white doors and drawer fronts. Much needed storage was achieved with corner lazy Susan’s and deep drawers in the base cabinets. Two new upper cabinets were added on either side of the new microwave/hood with pullouts for spices. The new and existing wall cabinets received a 3 step, Art Deco style crown. All the cabinet pulls are brushed nickel with a curve shape as a nod to the original Art Deco style of the house. The existing stainless dishwasher, wall ovens and side-by-side refrigerator remained. For Ann, working with IKEA cabinetry – and the right design professionals – made all the difference. “My advice is don’t be afraid of IKEA! It’s an easy product and allows you to have a dream kitchen at a fraction of the price, in a fraction of the time of a normal kitchen,” she says. “Another plus of IKEA cabinetry is that if you mess something up you can return parts you don’t need and just purchase panels or door parts that were somehow missed in the original design,” she notes. “Lastly, I also highly recommend an experienced IKEA installer unless you have a small project or are a real DIYer. There was a real confidence knowing someone else had experience with the exact product I was using, so they could install efficiently and with everything aligned and level.” She concludes: “Ultimately, I got exactly what I wanted. I have a brand new gorgeous IKEA kitchen and don’t have to live with painted cabinets and 40-year-old drawers!”

“IKEA cabinetry looks good and costs less,” Ashwin says. It also allowed the couple to maximize storage space in the 220-square-foot kitchen. There are a lot of storage options in this kitchen, with the IKEA BODBYN base and upper cabinetry creating an accessible pantry area next to the built-in refrigerator, microwave and oven. The work triangle is enhanced by additional storage underneath the cooktop and two floating BODBYN cabinets next to the range hood, as well as additional base cabinetry below the sink area. However, the couple did encounter slight obstacles that were easy to overcome during the process. “IKEA needs more planning and iteration compared to a custom cabinet that is made to order. There were some minor issues with sizing, but thankfully we had a good installer [who solved the issue for us],” Ashwin notes. Likewise, the couple chose to work with IKD because they had read great reviews online which made the entire process easier as well. “We are happy with how our IKEA kitchen turned out and our advice is to find a good installer and use IKD Design”, Ashwin concludes.

This whole home remodel transformed a small Thousand Oaks home into a spacious retreat. No detail was spared as both interior and exterior renovations reshaped this beautiful home. Beginning with a 400 square foot addition, there was much needed space added for a beautiful open concept kitchen. Ultimately, Chelsea says that doing an IKEA remodel on your own is doable. “There’re many helpful resources out there, from YouTube videos to sites like HOUZZ, that give such good pointers about installation and design possibilities. The affordability and quality of IKEA cabinets also allows for a budget to stretch further. For us, that meant getting quartz countertops and high-end appliances that would have been totally out of the picture otherwise,” she says. “Also, the IKEA online Home Planner is challenging. I had played with designs before hiring IKD, and there were so many components I would’ve missed if I did it all myself.” She concludes: “Working with IKD helped us get a fabulous design and made ordering simple. They give you all the information you need. Because of that it took less than 40 minutes in-store with an IKEA kitchen planner to make sure I had everything I needed going home with me.”
