This Paradise Valley modern estate was selected Arizona Foothills Magazine's Showcase Home in 2004. The home backs to a preserve and fronts to a majestic Paradise Valley skyline. What’s also particularly interesting is that Sergei initially wanted an all-white design theme. “We decided to mix contrasting colors and finishes and use darker-colored stainless steel cabinets in the bottom part of the kitchen to anchor our high-gloss white upper kitchen cabinets. [I feel] stainless steel adds a loft-like feeling and pairs well with the steel and tempered glass loft area. They also reflect the light better so our kitchen looks crisp and bright overall.” He concludes: “Our kitchen really pairs well with the industrial-style kitchen décor of our apartment and, at the same time, helps to achieve an upscale, elegant look.” More than pleased with his project, Sergei suggests how to get similar results in your kitchen remodel. “Hire IKD designers, they are super professional,” he says. “I could envision our new kitchen but I needed somebody to draw the design using professional kitchen software to include floor plans, elevations, materials to buy, etc. Our IKD designer was able to capture my vision and deliver 3-D design renderings and the IKEA Home Planner file so that we could purchase our kitchen confidently, knowing everything would work.” He concludes: “After this renovation, our kitchen became more luminous and uncluttered. Now that it’s done, we couldn’t be happier. We love our new kitchen and frequently receive compliments from our guests!”

She adds: “Also make sure you shim the hanging rail if there are fluctuations in the wall. Having a straight and level rail really is key to reducing anguish later.” She concludes: “IKD really helped me figure out a new layout that worked well. The list of ‘extra items’ they provide was so comprehensive for ordering and assembly and the full set of plans made assembly easier. We refer back to them constantly.”

“We selected IKD’s design services because we wanted to incorporate Semihandmade into our design and they recommended IKD.” She continues: “The design was made really easy with IKD. They used most of our wants and needs to design the kitchen. They were really helpful throughout! For the most part, installation went really well. We ran into a little snag with our concrete counter tops being a little too thick, but that was easily remedied by the contractor.” She concludes with simple advice for future IKEA remodelers. “Go for it! IKEA cabinets are a great product for the money and Semihandmade will make them look high end!”

For Amanda, once the kitchen process started, her home posed a bit of a design obstacle course. She explains: “A big obstacle we faced was when we started moving a wall. It turned out that everything needed to be rewired and new plumbing had to be installed.” After that issue was addressed, she also had the range vent arrive damaged upon delivery and also encountered several weather-related delays, including leaks in her roof. “I also had some issues with getting new inspiration on Pinterest every few days, and then trying to change the design while [the contractor] was in the middle of the remodel. He did not love that,” she adds. And, of course, she wanted to bring in more light by expanding the window and to close the odd window to the laundry room. This was achieved by expanding the window as she wanted and placing open shelving on either side of the window, which cleverly insured that upper cabinets wouldn’t block out any light. Amanda concludes with some useful advice for other IKEA remodelers who are just starting out with their IKEA kitchen project. “If you feel [overwhelmed] when you see the price tag of cabinets at other stores, go to IKEA. My cabinets ended up costing me about 30% of what I would’ve spent at another store,” she says. She concludes: “My other piece of advice for anybody who wants to do a kitchen remodel is to pick your design and stick with it.” And if any obstacles present themselves – even things outside your control like weather or damaged items – definitely look on the bright side, you’ll have a new IKEA kitchen in no time!

These homeowners are well known to our team as repeat clients and asked us to convert a dated deck overlooking their pool and the lake into an indoor/outdoor living space. A new footer foundation with tile floor was added to withstand the Indiana climate and to create an elegant aesthetic. The existing transom windows were raised and a collapsible glass wall with retractable screens was added to truly bring the outdoor space inside. Overhead heaters and ceiling fans now assist with climate control and a custom TV cabinet was built and installed utilizing motorized retractable hardware to hide the TV when not in use. As the exterior project was concluding we additionally removed 2 interior walls and french doors to a room to be converted to a game room. We removed a storage space under the stairs leading to the upper floor and installed contemporary stair tread and cable handrail for an updated modern look. The first floor living space is now open and entertainer friendly with uninterrupted flow from inside to outside and is simply stunning.

For Lian, the success of her open concept IKEA kitchen was simple. “Use IKD!” she says.“Even if you think you know what you want, getting the design with all the parts and floor plans for your installer is worth every penny you spend with them.” She continues: “It helped us avoid costly mistakes in ordering the parts and having them installed properly.” She concludes: “Also, IKEA kitchens are better quality than people think they are and you can get a lot more for your money, so don’t hesitate, do it!”

Elaine says there are many factors to remember during the IKEA design and installation process. She explains: “First, it’s important to stay calm, and be flexible. Our kitchen was quite large and the IKEA store representative who completed the order made many mistakes. So, I made many trips to IKEA to buy extra parts.” She continues: “Also, go early to IKEA and don’t wait until the last minute. I couldn’t get to IKEA until the last day of the IKEA kitchen sale but that wasn’t a good idea!” From a product standpoint, she says that she would not recommend the IKEA push openers for cabinet doors. “I wanted a flush look on the tall cabinets and wall cabinets without any knobs or pulls. IKEA’s push openers were not strong enough for the horizontal wall cabinet doors that swing open from the bottom,” she says. Ultimately though, Elaine says she couldn’t be happier with the results of her modern, white IKEA kitchen. “My initial concern was whether the kitchen would look as nice as I had envisioned. I have to say that the actual kitchen has exceeded my expectations and looks better than anticipated!” she concludes.

The couple selected white IKEA RINGHULT wall cabinets and IKEA VOXTORP base cabinets in Walnut to go along with IKEA SEKTION cabinetry hardware, which really added warmth to the contemporary look. This warmth was carried through with floating shelves in Walnut from Semihandmade and custom Caesarstone White Marble Frosty Carrina countertops bought at IKEA and accented with IKEA OMLOPP LED lights. “Our budget was $8,500 and the project came in at $10,500 with a new deep sink, chef’s faucet and heavy-duty garbage disposal. [By researching on design sites] we were able to see images that allowed us to blend styles we liked and we’re very happy with the outcome,” she concludes.

It was also important for the white IKEA kitchen to have plenty of storage. “This is a dining room/kitchen combination room, so we wanted to make sure there was ample room for both dining and cooking activities,” he says. Therefore, featured throughout the kitchen in both the upper and base cabinetry is IKEA VEDDINGE cabinetry in white along with IKEA MAXIMERA drawers and IKEA UTRUSTA door fronts. Combined with the stainless steel appliances, this creates a light yet warm feel; especially when set against the IKEA KASKER countertops in custom light gray with sleek concrete effect. From a functional standpoint, there is enormous storage potential throughout. There is storage above the refrigerator and along the upper perimeter to the electric range and accompanying range hood, and then on the opposite side as well. There is even a small, three-drawer base cabinet on the opposite side of the stainless steel refrigerator. One standout element of the space is a clever IKEA “hack” using IKEA cabinetry retrofitted to conceal a washer-dryer combo set. Justin notes this was originally the biggest obstacle of the kitchen design. He explains: “We thought a washer/dryer was essential to the space, but we were really struggling with where exactly to put it and how to conceal it so that you weren’t staring at your laundry while eating breakfast.” In addition, the type of cabinet needed was not a cabinet that IKEA standardly offers, so IKD came up with an IKEA hack that was both functional and stylish. Specifically, the 80”(H) IKEA VEDDINGE cabinetry allows the washer-dryer to seamlessly blend into the layout; which maximizes the kitchen space. Justin concludes: “We chose IKEA because IKEA’s price point is unbeatable for the quality. We liked that IKEA offered versatility and ease and we really liked that there is a whole industry of professionals that only deal with IKEA products. So they know precisely how to design for IKEA cabinets and build IKEA cabinets, etc.” Having experienced the IKEA design and installation process, Justin shares some advice with other IKEA customers. “I would recommend that folks not try to do everything themselves, such as design, demo, shop and build. Designing a kitchen is a lot of work. If you can afford it: seek assistance,” he says. “We would also recommend using experienced installers who know IKEA cabinets in and out and can help with the details of your kitchen that make it look polished and complete. They also save time.” To that end, since it was a rental their timeline for the IKEA kitchen to be completed was very tight. “Our IKEA kitchen wasn’t a project we wanted stretched over six months. We wanted the whole project finished in several weeks [and we accomplished it],” he concludes.
