Perimeter grey tone painted cabinets in a custom color match per client’s request was specified. Shadow storm granite and cambria whitney quartz were used in combination to set off the cabinet colors. The existing floors were refinished during the project in a neutral tone. The ceiling was detailed in a classic tongue and groove board in a white paint finish as well as the wainscot wall panels and window trim. Expert installation is always a must for projects that entail stack crowned molding as elaborate as this installation. When working in historical homes, or homes of age that have leveling issues, stacked crown molding can hide the fact the ceilings may not be parallel to the floor.

The home was built in 1926 and had been remodeled a couple times. The kitchen was small and sandwiched between the closed off dining room and office not offering and view of outside or option for natural light (2 story house). The owners wanted to have a bigger kitchen with lots of light and a view of the backyard. 2-story houses have a harder time moving walls due to structural issues, but we were able to eliminate the wall between the office and kitchen to open up the space. After working through several design options, we relocated the laundry room door, created a new side door to the driveway, and moved the sink to the back wall to have a view of the yard. The owners love the craftsmen style and wanted to keep the look and feel but modernize everything. The accent tile behind the cooktop is handmade by FireClay tile. While a house on a hill can be quite grand, it can also present some extreme design challenges. Prior to our landscape renovation, there were serious drainage issues, dangerous grade transitions and no real “usable” spaces on the property. As part of our entire overhaul, a circular level lawn area for playing was carved into the slope with a stone retaining wall and a wall fountain as a central feature. A shorter wall framed the steps down to a bluestone patio with a dining area and a custom fireplace with a copper seamed hood. A shed for bicycle storage was tucked into the slope and detailed to mimic the house. A woodland walk connects the back to the front where another retaining wall allows the expansion of the front entry landing. The sidewalk from the street to this landing was redesigned as a series of bluestone slab stairs with level bluestone walkways between them. A brick pier with a copper hood to match the fireplace was designed for the street to display the house number and is illuminated by a wall sconce to match those on the house, while the street entry from the upper road to the garage was adorned with a custom lantern and house number plaque. The owners now entertain friends outdoors on a regular basis, which they were never able to do previously.

The owners of this very small home have no back yard and wanted to pack a lot of features into the sunny front yard. Designing small gardens can actually be challenging as using the space has to be ultra-efficient. Design goals included an area to grow vegetables, space to sit in the sun and privacy from the busy street. Gently curving Arizona flagstone pathways connect all of the garden features which include two large redwood raised vegetable beds. These special beds have seating walls on all four sides for enjoying your glass of wine and maximizing the space. We installed new redwood fences, pergolas and gates to provide a sense of enclosure from the street. Mounding, drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants create year-round color and invite insect activity. Hidden beneath the surface is a series of drains to address slope and runoff issues in the rainy season. You don't need a lot of space to enjoy the beautiful Santa Cruz outdoors!

Storage was also an issue. The homeowners wanted to consolidate and enhance their ability to store common items with easier access. So, we combined 2 closets into 1 with easy access to the kitchen and created a large entry hallway closet. Space was another concern that had to be addressed in the layout of the kitchen and adjoining dining room. By knocking out the wall between the two rooms we were able to dramatically increase, cabinet storage, available light, traffic flow and deliver a larger dining area. With the new connection between the kitchen and the dining/living room, we needed to hand-tooth new hardwood flooring seamlessly into existing oak. Our clients knew they wanted their backyard living area to be a combination of modern and rustic, matching the modern interior of their home yet with the relaxing rustic ambiance of the great outdoors. A smooth cedar pergola was constructed to provide protection from the hot summer sun to enjoy the outdoor kitchen and dining area. We used wood tile veneer for the outdoor kitchen to match the indoor kitchen backsplash and topped it with a colored concrete counter top. A Corten steel square fire pit creates another gathering spot for relaxing. Salt finish concrete patio and pads throughout the entire outdoor living space ties it all together.
